Austin Walker joins Giant Bomb

Congrats to Mr. Walker.

Giant Bomb threads on GAF are weird these days. Always gotta put down something or someone on the site before you say anything good about it. Makes for some bizarre posts.

Eh, it's the nature of the beast when it comes to personality driven content. Not everybody is going to like anybody.

As long as people aren't being super shitty about it I think it's fine. Some people can get super shitty about it though.

Awesome! Was getting nervous it would be months before GBeast would finally get a new hire.

He seems like a dude that thinks about games in a more meaningful manner than you typically see at Giant Bomb, which is something that was a bit lacking after Patrick left.
Hopefully he'll be a part of the GB E3 coverage (which I guess is kinda a trial by fire).

I can't wait for some classic GBEast podcast moments to be made! I feel like the podcast has gotten a little too proper and boring these days. Hopefully, they can recreate that off the cuff magic of early podcasts. I really hope this guy's enthusiasm rubs off on the other guys. They seem to just be going through the motions these days.

Awesome hire! Can't wait to see more content out of Beast.

Edit: It wouldn't be a GB thread on Gaf without a ton of shitty personal attacks on the guys. Surprise surprise.

Hooray for some much needed diversity in Giant Bomb! Haven't listened to this week's Beastcast yet but it's nice to see they got a permanent/regular third chair. Kentucky Route Zero and Fantasy Life are some damn good games.

If only they're looking for interns so I can be Vinny and Alex's coffee boy. A man can dream.

Wait, what? I'm gonna need an explanation here :lol

Dan recounted a childhood story about how he intentionally failed an eyesight test so that the doctor would give him glasses. So, he wore the glasses and he's pretty sure they actually fucked up his eyes. Hence the need for him to wear glasses today.

Thanks to that though we got a willing guinea pig to test experimental eye laser surgery,

Dan Ryckert, furthering scientific research.

Austin Walker is such a talent. He's so much better than I'll ever be when it comes to articulating the hard truths about games, and I'm so thankful he'll be writing for Giant Bomb. You folks are lucky! Enjoy it.

I will be honest: this is literally the first time I have heard of this guy. This of course means nothing and I am looking forward to listen to him on the giant beastcast and during quick looks. It will at least be interesting to get to know him and his opinions.

You've done awesome work so far at Kotaku. Thanks for staying so classy.

THe looks of it to me is the critical discussions (outside of Alex) somewhat left when Patrick went and I feel Austin will fill that gap nicely.

Does anyone go to Giant Bomb for that? I'm curious of the numbers Patrick's old articles pulled vs the usual video content.

Awesome. I've never been exposed to his work before, but he seems like a cool guy. Glad to hear that GBeast is getting off the ground. Really enjoyed the podcast last week.

The frequency of that type of discussion is still the same now as it was when Patrick was there anyways.

I sometimes think I'm crazy because Giant Bomb (the site and the podcast) has pretty much always been the same to me. Laid back and 99% not-serious with a bunch of naturally affable people. From the Arrow Pointing Down days to now. Never really seen any of the stylistic changes other people notice and/or complain about.

I think a lot of people make assumptions about Giant Bomb users.

It's OK to like dumb as shit videos and appreciate the style Patrick brought and I'm assuming Austin will bring.

The reason I subscribe is because there's a lot of variety in personality.

If I just wanted one or the other there are plenty places elsewhere, but nowhere crosses the streams like the duders.

I hate the snobbery as much as the people who tried to railroad Patrick.

I've always wondered about that, it seems to be something Jeff goes back and forth on. He's talked (at length) about the move to video, the audience's lack of interest in written content (including that Skylanders experiement) and the difficulty in monetising it, yet he seems to want to expand the amount of writing on the site. I dunno.

Hopefully Austin's pretty good on-camera too - E3's going to be a trial by fire.

Agreed, I don't get the people that are saying it's changed for the worst. Yes there are different personalities but I think it's as good as ever.

My editorials regularly did better numbers than videos, but the videos were more frequent.

Cool to know!

Would be cool to have Austin Walker here, if he wants.

Austin is a cool dude. He was on my podcast a few weeks ago if you want to get a feel for him.

The Josh and Jay Show Featuring Rowan Kaiser – Episode 109: Flanders of Eternity

Man, a 1:02:53, that must be weird having your name as a character in a game (Rimworld) that's made by a gamergater (Tynan Sylvester) lol.

KOTOR 2 being Austin Walker's favourite game makes me want to revisit it, because I really liked what I played of it back in the day.

I was not expecting a hire until after summer. This is very cool; congratulations to Austin!

GBE has been very good and I look forward to seeing how much better they'll now be with a trio.
