This on PS4 seems like a PSX announcement to me, especially with EW coming to Vita.

Probably not so soon.
My bet would be that they want to focus on one platform at first. Then some time later they will announce an expantion or DLC along with a console version that will include both the base game and this new content (like Diablo 3 on Ps4/X1)

XCOM really should just be a PC-only game. No qualms about this.

Would have loved if they announced a new Bioshock though. Maybe in sometime.

I thought Enemy Unknown was terribly shallow and boring (never played the original games), so I'm hoping being PC only adds a good bit of depth.

Yup. No way they pass on the console dollars forever.

What if the console money wasn't as much as we thought?

If it's true that it's a PC exclusive, I'm going to guess it didn't perform as well on consoles, and projected sales on PC is simply more worth while to perfect it and focus on their main market and fan base.

Human teeth, kinda creepy.

edit: also ear holes. Weren't hybrids/genetic stuff mentioned in the prerelease stuff?

Yaaaay. Loved the first one. Played it on hard ironman. Was really good. I should probably go back and play the last level though. I literally stopped playing on the absolute last level.

Procedural generated maps are right in the headline. That is the biggest thing I wanted for this by far.

Oh wow, I just skipped the text because of my excitement, holy shit official mod tools and support! Long War mod 2 is going to be glorious!

PC only? Why...

Surely console version is coming further down the line, I mean they released the last game on iOS and Android devices. Have a PC that's more than capable of playing it but would much rather play it on console.

Find out later this week:

"And, later this week we’ll go in-depth with Solomon and DeAngelis on the reasons behind the bold move to take XCOM from a multiplatform series to a PC exclusive, and how XCOM 2 will be tailored to take advantage of that single platform’s strengths – followed by Firaxis’ exciting plans to support modders and their work."

I'd take a guess at more in depth mechanics to the game leading to a mouse & keyboard focus, as well as making mods an integral part of it. They might be aiming for the same level of popularity and variety as Civ V or Cities Skyline in terms of modding and longevity. All the gameplay stuff is coming around E3, so hopefully there is a more clear understanding soon

I wouldn't be surprised if a console version of this magically appears, but in a slightly different form.
Like a PC-only version in 2015 and a console-only version in like 2020 or something

Awesome news but too bad I don't have a PC capable of running any modern games. Hopefully this gets a PS4 and Xbox One release.

I'm disappointed to see them keeping the same really generic art style for the second game. I guess it's part of the brand's identity by now, but I still don't like it.

I'll be waiting on more details about customization before I decide on a purchase - the visual and voice options were terribly lacking in XCOM and compounded the generic-ness of the whole affair.

That's where most of my hesitation comes from, though, and I have no doubts it'll be rock solid from a strategy perspective.

Deflated that it's PC exclusive, at least for now. Now I take my bets on a PS4 release later, or build a new computer this fall.

XCOM has always been a PC franchise to me, that being said, I wouldn't mind playing it on my PS4 also.

And it's awesome that they're focusing on mod support, that could give the game some real legs.

Mmmm, that seems sensible too. Firaxis loves PAX announcements; if not PSX, I bet we hear that at PAX East.

So...

- Mobile mothership base
- Resistance force
- Alien/Human Hybrid Cities

Seems pretty good. I'm guessing from the premise that instead of having stable funding from the start and losing it bit by bit as countries pull out or are destroyed, this game will do the reverse, where you start with almost nothing, and you have to convince factions to support your cause and build up your support network that way. Definitely heavily inspired by Apocalypse both in premise and in gameplay elements. Not what I would have expected from a sequel, but still pretty exciting!
I think I'd prefer that. I can feel like I'm progressing and not just slowly losing. lol

HOLY SHIT PC EXCLUSIVE? Did NOT see that coming.

You know what, I was o e of the ones early on hoping this was Bioshock related but Enemy Unknown was fantastic. Sign me up

Intriguing. I'm curious how a guerilla XCom would play out - would that end up downplaying the base management and research aspects? It seems somewhat awkward to have those if you're not backed by multiple governments, after all.

...wait, who is financing the organisation now? It's not Abe Lincoln, is it?

If they are going into a more Civ like route, I was guessing they could do a seperate Xcom similar to Civ Rev rather than full blown Civ. It's hard to judge with so little info, but I guess we'll all find out through the course of the month just where they are going with Xcom 2

Enemy unknown was such a good game, the best encounter design in any game of its kind released in the past years (and there have been quite a few)

I hope this one has better k/m controls and that it's less buggy than enemy unknown.

Also mod support woooooo

Tried getting through the first 3 or 4 times and it just bored me to tears every time. Hopefully this actually has some sort of plot and a couple memorable characters. I doubt it though, that doesn't seem like XCOM style.

XCOM is more about emergent storytelling than the actual game's story, so I doubt you'll see a very deep plot here.

Also makes me wonder how big our squad size is going to be. The overall small squad size in EU was something I hope they changed in a sequel.

I mean i have a gaming PC but i really did enjoy their implementation of console controls. Does this mean no gamepad support and just using mouse and keyboard?

The popularity of the Workshop on Civ 5 and the effect of Long War are very real. Firaxis has a very dedicated, if not fanatical, PC fanbase and Firaxis knew that the game that fanbase wanted was going to more or less need heavy mod support and procedural generation, things that were going to make any console release require a huge amount of effort.

In addition to that, a console release would likely mean that they would need to go whole ham AAA to make it something console gamers would give notice to and that's going to cause huge problems logistically for Firaxis and also for the game's overall release date.

I don't think we'll see removing controller support. They had it nailed down perfect in the last game and the control scheme honestly scaled really well into modded EU/EW where there were a lot more abilities.

You aren't a strategy gamer, I suppose.

This is like asking to tighten up the plot in that game called chess.

As a PC player, this kinda sucks. I don't feel like XCOM suffered from getting a console release, and I know a few console owners who really enjoyed Enemy Unknown.

You can count me among them. I didn't know what to expect when I first played it but I ended up playing it until 4 AM. Kinda bummed it's PC-exclusive but at least they're still making them. Looking forward to playing vicariously through GAF this November.
