Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I have Windows 8.1 Pro but I still don't see the icon.. I have the update thing installed as well.

Edit: I deleted the KB3035583 update and reinstalled it. The icon is there now. If anyone have the problem where the icon isn't showing up for you. Just try deleting the KB3035583 update and reinstalling it.

The support should be enough for anyone.

There's literally no reason to stay behind.

You'd be surprised. My friend is on Windows 7 and he plans on staying with it even though Microsoft is offering a free upgrade. He likes the Windows 7 a lot. I can't wait to try Windows 10 on my Surface Pro 3.

You can just go to \\Windows\System32\GWX\GWX.exe and run it manually if you aren't getting the annoy prompt.

They need to release a detailed tutorial regarding different upgrade scenarios.

I am planning on installing a separate SSD to install a brand new Windows 10 on. I have a legitimate copy of Windows 8.1 on my current HDD that I will abandon. Should I bother reserving? Should I be reserving to secure a legitimate copy of Windows 10?

What if I want to go RTM on my SSD first?

I don't know.

My copy of win8.1 has issues installing updates which fail for months now so i've spent the last hour or so trying to fix it, such an annoying issue because everything automatic from windows and microsoft fails to fix the issue, currently redownloading 39 important updates hoping that will fix it.

My win8 tablet has yet to get an alert about registering for the windows 10 update but my father's win7 laptop already had the prompt.

My 8.1 is silky smooth and works perfectly. But I do have a good gaming rig + SSD.

Are you sure the bugs are not an issue with software like graphics card drivers? No offence, but in my experience most "bugs" people blame on Windows are caused by software people install themselves. Slowness might be the slow hard drive slowing things down, but that's a hardware issue really rather than OS issue.

Depends on why it is buggy and slow.

Something is fucked on your end if that's the case.
How would I determine what's causing my problems?

Can't wait. My ageing W7 install is in desperate need of a clean up. Been waiting for W10 before I bothered.

so what exactly do i need to backup?
usually just did a clean install before but i have too many steam games and such to do that this time
what about stuff like Nvidia drivers?

I got the notification to reserve a spot on my PC, clicked register then nothing happened just a blank screen then it went away but the notification is still in the taskbar. Is that how it's supposed to be?

That plus the fact that Win 7 takes for FUCKING ever to load up next to Win 8 let alone Win 10.

I got Windows 7 installed on a SSD and it takes maybe 10-12 secs to boot. How is that "takes for FUCKING ever" to load? Does Windows 8 load in 5 secs or what?

I will upgrade to Win10 from Win7, can't wait for DX12.

I avoided Win8 like the plague, even tho I have a laptop with it, but my gaming PC is on Win7, I tried the laptop for a while to see if I got used to Win8 and it didn't happen, so I didn't upgraded my PC, but now I'm really looking forward to upgrading both PC and laptop.

on my SSD 5 seconds would be the most for Windows 8, I'd clock it more like 2-3 seconds. Its really fast. My wife can cold boot her laptop faster than my old laptop returned from sleep.

my rather basic quad core 1.3 windows tablet will boot from cold to login screen in seconds too, windows 8 is a lot lighter then 7 for stuff like that.

how much do drives to back shit up usually go for?
100gb should be enough for all my steam games and stuff
i can do a full reinstall with everything else

why did they skip windows 9?

One rumour that keeps popping up is that there's a lot of legacy applications which check your OS version by doing something like "if OS equals Windows9(x)..." which would return true if they called it Windows 9, causing stuff to break.

I kept seeing that thread 'Are you going to upgrade to windows 10?' and was like 'Nope, too expensive, will wait till I have to upgrade my computer.'

And then I get this popup.

o.o

I can't believe they are doing this for free.
Yeah, pretty cool. Really wanting to make up for the lacklustre start of windows 8 I guess.

Faster
More stable
More secure
Better compatibility with future programs

I honestly don't understand why somebody wouldn't upgrade when it's completely free.

Despite the positive reviews of Windows 10 preview builds, there were many people who were not happy with Windows 8 after being very happy with Windows 7. I was one of those early adopters who went back to Windows 7 because I just didn't like the changes to my workflow that 8 introduced, and have tolerated it since 8.1.

Also, I mean, if we go back further.. 98 and 98SE were pretty solid operating systems when they were mature, and so those that upgraded to Windows ME must surely have been in for a surprise. Further, when XP was a mature OS it was good, only to have the Vista bomb dropped.

So, I think there's a legitimate hesitancy and skepticism towards Microsoft Operating Systems when they first debut. I'm confident in remembering that Windows 7 was maybe the only Windows OS release that Microsoft nailed pretty well on day 1.

My windows7 PC now has a little system tray icon buggine me to reserve my copy of win10.

For those not getting the notification, specifically on Win7, I'm wondering which version they are using. I've not received it, but I am using TechNet installs, so I didn't anticipate getting the notifications at all personally.

There has to be some form of a "check" that passes or fails before the notification pushes to the system. Has anyone with a volume license or TN install gotten a notification?
