A Splatoon 3D platformer: you know you want it

To me, it's the next logical step for the series. I'm only 5 levels into the solo campaign and I'm pleasantly surprised how deep and well designed the experience is. I wasn't expecting much more than a traditional mission mode that teaches the game mechanics and let's you do some grinding.

Instead I'm getting good enemy variety, big maps, and an actual boss encounter that was really good. Reminds me of Ratchet and Clank in a way. Now imagine a full game like this, using Splatoon's excellent and fresh mechanics to explore 3D worlds and collect stars/sprites/jiggies/whatever. A sort of anti-Mario Sunshine where you have to splat the environment so you can progress in squid form. Yes, please!

Anyone else up for that?

Not without the multiplayer component, if that's what you're implying.

I'm totally OK with splatoon 2 (Spla2n) having a much more fleshed out single player, though. The focus should still be on the online multiplayer.

Of all the games to be more like the original 3D Mario games, Splatoon isn't my first idea. I did like the single player campaign, just want more out of it

I think you'll be pleased with the later levels, op. i have been so far. Nothing has quite reached the size of a world in sunshine but things have ramped up nicely. I hope splatoon sequels reach good heights in both platforming and combat for their campaigns.

I think I get what OP means. If Splatoon's Single Player is Mario Galaxy, OP wants a Splatoon Single Player that is Mario 64/Sunshine.

Splatoon Sequel that is a Mario Sunshine Prequel.

Yeah the single player mixes some of the best ideas from Mario Sunshine and Galaxy. It's a bit more simplistic, but the care in level design is there.

I'd certainly be interested in playing a full-on single player title of Splatoon.

Only 5 levels in? Man you have no idea. The later levels are awesome.

My wishlist for spla2n:

- a bigger hub city with more shops, live people and day/weather cycles

- more single player. The paint and squid mechanic is perfect for brutal platforming and puzzling. I want to be challenged even more.

That's pretty much already what the single player is, though.

My wish for the sequel is that they basically do Splatoon Borderlands. Have a big explorable world, light RPG elements, loot, and 4-player co-op.

Why does everyone suddenly want this game world reconfigured into a different game? So weird.

I would also like more single player stuff, but not at the relegation of the multiplayer.

THIS.

4-Player co-op is a must for any future releases in this franchise. I think it seems pretty apparent that Splatoon got a big push internally at Nintendo after last E3, and most of the single-player must have been added after that. For a sequel, Nintendo really needs to expand what the game offers and dig deep on all the different gameplay options that online shooters provide.

It's a great IP that can lend itself to many different themes.

EDIT: I mean, hell, the shopkeepers alone could be their own rock band.

This....pretty confused by this thread, maybe OP can elaborate why the current campaign wouldn't be considered exactly what he is looking for?

Don't get me wrong, the current single-player is great, it just feels more... low-budget... then I'd imagine a full-fledged single-player Nintendo game would.

As I stated, current campaign was much more than I expected and is awesome in its' own right. But it still feels more like a mission/training mode to me than a full-on Galaxy-style adventure. I'm talking about something like Mario 64 or Banjo where you get to explore larger, more open worlds. Along with more traditional collectables and gaining different mechanics/weapons as you go. Essentially what Yooka Laylee is going for.

If love to play a game like that with Splatoon mechanics/characters. It would be like Nintendo's answer to Ratchet and Clank.

Of course not. I assumed the OP simply meant the next game would have a more robust single player component.

The single player is excellent. A major surprise. Honestly, one of the best platformers I've played in a long time (granted, the genre is scarce). I would love to see what a future campaign could be with more time put into it. The focus should always be on MP for Splatoon. But I would love for some DLC levels to the campaign. Or any sequels, maybe a more beefy campaign.

Since we aren't getting a sequel to Jet Force Gemini, I'd take a full fledged Splatoon 3D action-platformer single player game in its stead.

MP's obviously the focus for the franchise and that's fine, but I'd love some additional SP content. I blew through the campaign and the amiibos already and I don't really want to wait for a sequel for more of that kind of mayhem.

I'm not so convinced the mechanics would really work in a "traditional" platformer sense, though. I think the obstacle course levels work well because it already follows the basic flow of an MP match, ink and go. You're almost always motivated to keep moving and not sit in one place for too long. More exploration could be fun, but if you've already inked up a large open space, what's left to do?

A Splatoon racer might be interesting.

Using similar mechanics/weapons to the normal game but with a mixture of squid car and squid boat to either paint more of your own ink on the racetrack or travel through your own ink faster.

I definitely wouldn't mind it. The current campaign is great and I'd gladly see what kind of ideas the developers come up with when the single-player component isn't just an afterthought.

Something that's not getting enough love is the hub of the campaign. Finding the entrances to the levels is simple but great fun. It's the most interesting hub Nintendo has done since Sunshine.

Yes, to be perfectly clear, I didn't mean at the expense of multiplayer. I was more thinking what else can they add to take a sequel to the next level. Others here have posted some good alternate suggestions here, like a Splatoon Borderlands. That sounds really cool too.

Yep, definitely want more of that delicious singleplayer. Maybe with more openworld'ish elements - it was fun to figure out how to get to different levels in hub world.
Also, more story/setting!

Actually I would prefer something bigger than just a platformer. Open world adventure would better. They created such a realized world that it'd be awesome to explore it.

I fear that if we just wanted an even more realized platformer would just get more of the same. Which is a lot of fun, but I want more than a separate world/stage type game. I just want to explore the Splatoon world doing whatever I please with awesome gear and fresh styles

I was honestly impressed by how good the campaign is. The mechanics lend themselves to a puzzle/platformer/shooter incredibly well. The campaign isn't even that short - it's so well designed it feels satisfying by the end.

But I agree there is great potential here for a bigger campaign-oriented game. Or an online co-op campaign that fuses combat with cooperative puzzle solving.

I've only played up to the first boss in single-player so I'm not really in a position to talk but I agree, especially if what I've seen so far is an indication of what the rest of the levels are going to look like. In a theoretical Splatoon 2 I would love to see the inclusion of a more fleshed out single player mode in addition to the multi-player. The mario-esque indeterminate floating platforms in the sky work well enough but I think the world of Splatoon has enough to it that they could create a more defined world to traverse. Skate parks, malls, airports, sky scrapers, factories, amusement parks, and city roads are just some of the locations they could use to draw inspiration. What I'm not sure about is if I want the emphasis to be entirely about platforming

As tempting as this sounds, I'd rather not. Nintendo comes up with unique gameplay and people want them to revert to a Mario-like experience? I don't want this new experience to be homogenized. Splatoon needs its own identity. Rather focus on the online and shooting mechanics.
