Splatoon |OT2| Prepare to Dye

I never realized that other than the Splatfest T-Shirts, participators receive a festival arm-band similar to what you'd get if you'd go to a music festival.

Nice touch.

oh wow, that's really awesome

I wonder if you can keep it on after the festival

Hit level 10, tried my first ranking matches, just steamrolling over everyone so far(get it, using the roller, GET IT).

Not sure why you could only do turf war up to that level, the king of the hill style is pretty fun.

Nice set, the only good thing I have right now is a pair of headphones with 3 inksavers (main), and im just waiting to unlock the last slot so I hopefully get dat 4th insaver. That would be godly.

You get diminshing returns when stacking the same ability. I'm not sure a fourth inksaver would do you much good.

Enough ranked for tonight.

I think the most frustrating part is that how much skill or effort you put in is virtually irrelevant in terms of which team wins. You might as well roll a dice every time a game fills up.

I played about a dozen games tonight. In that time I rose to one win short of a rank-up twice, and by the time I finished playing I was back roughly where I started. I was still topping my team after most matches, but it makes no difference. You're at the mercy of the matchmaking nine times out of ten.

I think I ought to stick to turf war. This is hurting my soul.

Considering B+ and up is >80% Japanese any time of day finding matches might be extremely tough

At least turf war will be a breeze against all the silly baka gaijins

someone should browse through Japanese gaming boards and report back how many users there complain about those Westerners with their shitty internet connections and lag rollers

The feeling when you destoryed the whole opponent team and your teammates still failed to splat the zone, then you lost with a 20/9 k/d.
Splatoon is a MOBA, confirmed

This annoys me too

I wish they had ranked turf war as well, I get the feeling that a lot of people give up trying in ranked matches because one team can storm into the lead and comebacks from that are rare, so people stop trying as it will speed up the next roll of the matchmaking dice

Its easier for the lead to change often in turf war, and you can go from being down to wiping the other team out with 30 seconds to go and reclaiming enough of the map to gain the lead

Within 90 seconds of a ranked match you will know if you're in a team capable of winning or not, if not you can go all out but if the other team are better you're going to lose no matter what, maybe giving losers of a knockout some money/points based on performance would stop people just giving up

Oooh I wonder it can pry me away from the silver aerospray, probably depends on what its special is as I love the Inkooza.

Reddit:

Tomorrow morning a new weapon, the "Splash-o-matic", is going to be released. It's a rapid-fire shooter with minimal scattering of the bullets. It has less offensive output, but you have much more focus/targeted ability. The sub is "Suction Bomb" and the special is "Bomb Rush".

I don't fully grasp the logic here. If it is a "dice roll", then why are you at the mercy of the matchmaking? If skill and effort doesn't matter, then the matchmaking should have zero influence, as the skill/effort of all the players doesn't matter. You are simultaneously saying that the game is complete luck, while saying you are at the mercy of your team's skill.

I think the .96 Gal is the best weapon for lag.
a tip for ranked - unless you are actually quite good, you might only want to play when the map rotation favors you

my ideal map rotation for ranked is something like Mall and Kelp Dome, and I don't even consider playing if Skatepark is on the rotation

and I've found that when the majority of players are below your rank, you win less points and lose more
I know that is one of the things the rotation thing is for, but that's a lame way of doing it. :p

Honestly, I'm starting to feel like the real issue is actually the ranking system. Imagine you had a rank attached to you at school, where getting questions right during the day would raise it and getting them wrong would lower it. Now imagine that in addition to that, the answers of any student sitting near you would also raise or lower the rank of everyone in the vicinity. You could work as hard as possible and answer every question correctly, but you'd still be at the mercy of those around you. Sometimes they'd help you and sometimes they'd harm you, but ultimately it just means you have very little control.

That's Splatoon ranked. I can't help but feel that it isn't really fair to give players an individual rank that has so little to do with their actual experience or ability. I wonder if it might be possible to tally things like total splatzone inked, enemy kills, time spent holding the splatzone, contribution towards reclaiming the splatzone, etc to create a rank that more accurately represented a player's contribution to the team?

I'm probably not expressing myself well. I'm basically trying to say that you have very little control over what your rank does. Sometimes you'll land a good team. Sometimes you'll land a good team, but the opposition will land a great one. Sometimes your team will suck. Sometimes things will be evenly balanced and it'll be impossible to tell who or what resulted in the final score. No matter how good or bad you are, you're still only one of eight, and the actions of the other seven contribute more to what your rank does than you individually ever could. Which is frustrating, because it's an individual rank.

Sincere suggestion: Maybe don't read so much into the rank? Think of it as a rough indication of skill and dedication to the game, not a precise measurement. Everyone is exposed to the same worldwide variety of player skill. Over time, the law of large numbers will make your rank more accurate.

Also, not everyone is destined to be A rank. I know everyone believes they are better than average, and posts in this thread make it very clear that many people believe A+ rank should be achievable with some time investment, but this is not necessarily true. Maybe you are truly a "C+" or a "B-"!

In the end, there could be more individual metrics and public stats, but this game seems to be designed to be simple and team-focused. If your current team sucks, so be it. Everyone has that feeling sometime. Think about how many times you have stood in line at the grocery store and thought that the line next to you was moving faster. Just as you are often the one standing in that "faster" line, you will also sometimes find yourself with teammates that work well together. If you consistently find that your team doesn't work well, it's possible you haven't played enough matches to allow chance to even things out, or maybe you are part of the problem.

If you're good enough you can often turn the tide by yourself in ranked.
It's easy to blame other people, happens in every goddamn team based game. Also sometimes people in the other team are just damn good and playing better than you do

You should definitely have over a 50% win rate in ranked if you can contribute to your team effectively. Matchmaking can be shit but the outcomes aint random

Yeah, you gotta know when to doff your hat to the opposing team for a hard-fought match sometimes. Bad teammates happen on both sides, but often all eight of you will be going hard in the paint, and you just get outplayed.

Even when I get stuck with bad teammates, I try to focus on how I personally performed. The final results don't matter as much to me as playing better than I did the day before.

Plus the kill/death count isn't always reflective of how a person has played - a person using an Inkbrush on the central tower in Blackbelly Skatepark could get 0 kills but they provide a super jump point for the rest of their team-mates and they can cover both zones from that vantage point.

so far my personal highlight of today was rushing to Urchin Underpass mid in ranked and scoring a triple kill with the charger before they could even reach the trench

Apparently nobody else in the region plays with the vanilla .52 Gal. I haven't seen a wall in the wild that wasn't mine for aaaaaages.

To be honest, if there was an option to hide my rank I'd probably use it at this point. It's just painful watching it inch closer and closer to a step-up on a good run, only to plummet again on a bad one.

I should reiterate that my issue isn't with losing matches or being held back by other players (I'm fairly certain I'm an average player at best myself) but with a ranking system that assigns you a personal score that doesn't reflect your contribution so much as the combined efforts of you and three strangers who you realistically might never play with again.

Anyway, I'm shutting up about this now. While I do feel like I have some kind of a point here, I'm really just cranky because I couldn't rank up to B-.

Nah I understand, a lot of people don't like ELO changes based on team play, and instead prefer having it work based on your individual performance.

Well, i'm B- for the 3rd time in 3 hours, so it's time for a break.

And yes, I remember when my team got to 19-18 in Urchin Underpass after we stalemated the area with 20 seconds left till overtime.

I was basically in some DBZ-Style Energy Clash with some guy on the other end of the pit after our teams inkzooka'd the area, leaving only us 2. Eventually the other 3 guys on his team came in from the top route and joined him and I was like "Oh, sh*t!"...

...but then I just saw 2 of my dudes come swimming in beside me and shielded us and it was like "Time to end this!" and we reclaimed it and won the match.

In another game, me and some guy were the only 2 members in The Mall Zone basically on the low-ground dodging Sniper shots ad trying to take down the other people who also had the high ground.

Cross posting from the new weapon thread:

More detailed description from the Splatoon tumbler: http://splatoonus.tumblr.com/post/121346142259/listen-up-at-7-pm-pt-a-new-weapon-enters-the

Listen up! At 7 PM PT, a new weapon enters the fray—the Splash-o-matic! Its shots don’t spread much, and it has excellent rapid-fire capability. It could be said to be a bit lacking in attack power, but zero in on a target and they’ll burst in no time flat. Plus, this bad boy comes equipped with Suction Bombs as a sub weapon, and Bomb Rush as a special weapon.
So it's rapid fire and low attack like the aerospray but doesn't spread much like the zapper. I wonder what the range is like.
