Steam Summer Sale 2015 thread of refunding everything you buy (June 11-21)

Any criticisms of Valkyria Chronicles? I've never really played SRPG's and this always seemed a great place to start.

Is xbox controller better then keyboard and mouse?

The AI can be pretty crappy, but it's good apart from that. Both control schemes work fine, so just try one out and see if you want to keep with it.

It's really good, but the cutscenes are 720p because the source files couldn't be found like 8 years after it was first developed and the scoring system is messed up because completing objectives fast gets the highest scores instead of doing a comprehensive job of clearing enemies.

ending the battle ASAP with minimal casualty sounds like a comprehensive strategy to me. =P

but at the end alicia is super OP in valkyria.

So, in the Steam mini-game, I'm on level 321 and am up to over 700k in health.

...Is there any real point in keeping the game going? I go over and spend my gold every so often and keep my character alive...but does getting higher levels actually help anything?

I know there are community unlocks and stuff, but do I personally ever unlock anything besides cards?

Play KB+M. Much better with it!

The criticisms that you might notice is that the game is "anime" in story and that some missions require trial and error to defeat.

I recommend playing through the whole game blind first, then pulling out the "OP" strats using
The Almighty Alicia
on NG+.

Yeah, but when you buy a SRPG, you'd think the strategy part wouldn't be "find shortcut to objective, send scouts, ???, profit!", you know what I mean?

Only about half of the objectives in the game are base/point capture and out of half of those you can't scout rush because you don't have the right Orders or Potentials yet anyway (or the point capture has to be done by a tank).
You could mitigate the inability to rush by cheating and looking up YouTube strategies before you play missions on those particular battles but if you're going to do that why bother buying and playing the game? That's my opinion.

I wonder what they can find to have people keep playing the game. I'm already fed up with it on day 2 and frankly the deals it unlocks are for games I couldn't care less so far. I just keep the game open in the background to get cards drop.

just cards. I'm not sure why they aren't dropping. i'm just going to let it run overnight.

I've only played it on PS3, but...

Pros:
  • The story
  • The characters
  • The watercolor art style
  • The music
  • The gameplay
Cons:
  • It's "anime"
I love Valkyria Chronicles, it's my favorite game of the last generation, but let's be honest the weapon system isn't that good. The way you improve your arsenal is way too linear, they fixed that aspect with Valkyria 2, unfortunally in my opinion, they sacrificed story and characters in the sequel.

VC has more issues than just being "anime" like some questionable balancing and whatnot. But for 5 bucks, it's nothing work quibbling over.

Beyond your three card drops? Nah.

Someone please PM me if CS: GO becomes a daily deal! :3

We're really not going to remember.

Well, getting to high levels in the game does allow you to rank up your Monster badge, which gives you more steam exp, if such a thing matters to you. After beating level 10 it gives 75 exp, but now mine is giving me 200 exp.

I disagree. It has a some what fun rhythm mechanic to it but take that away and you are left with a very mediocre roguelike.

"If you disregard the unique thing this game does well, it's not special."

I could also say taking the RPG elements out of Dark Souls makes it a mediocre hack and slash.

Fair enough. I guess I bought it as being a fan of RougeLikes and not so much of rhythm games.

So Wasteland is on sale. Not sure if I should get it or not. I'm *sigh* asking for help.

Here's my dilemma. I'll feel a bit silly because it was a few dollars cheaper during GoG's sale, although I'd just prefer having it on Steam. While I loved Fallout 1, 2, and NV, this game seems to be a little more... serious in tone. There's not groin shots and I really disliked Original Sin. On the plus side it has a slider for combat speed which would alleviate much of my gripe with Original Sin.

So is it worth or is it all caps in all chat WORTH!

Welp, Valkyria Chronicles is my first refund of the sale. The story telling and dialogues are fucking horrible. And I don't like the gameplay much either.

To anyone who's tried it, how's the refunds working? Do they take a long time? I ask because I'm somewhat interested in getting Endless Legend if a sale drops by, but while I'm good for most requirements, it's my old piece of junk graphics card (GTX 650) is apparently slightly below the minimium required to run it.

Since i'm not sure if a lower resolution + low graphics quality would do, still thinking of grabbing the game, but if it doesn't work out I guess I can try to get a refund as to not waste money...

If you loved F1, F2 etc... you'll probably love this. Divinity OS didn't click with me either, but I loved LOVED wasteland 2. Added bonus: there is a big free graphics update coming very soon.

I heard that combat in Wasteland 2 is less complex than Fallout 1 & 2, and that's why I'm holding on buying it. I also don't like the idea of having too many characters in my party for this kind of RPG. It really has that classic Fallout vibes, but I'm still not sure.
Will it be fun if I only bring 2 party member and play on easy/normal?

I'm not in any way discouraging picking it up now, but if you're not in a super-rush to play it now, it may be worth waiting for the updated version to be released.

Also worth keeping in mind perhaps is that many of those who backed the Bard's Tale IV kickstarter are likely to receive a copy of Wasteland 2 in a month or so - many of those will be 'spare', I reckon.

I really dug it.

So in relation to Fallout, it's a lot more linear. You'll definitely be finding yourself going to certain towns and completing the story in order. There's much more structure to the game than Fallout, you have a clearly defined mission.

In terms of combat, it's a square grid turn based system. You have headshots for aimed shots and that's it. Otherwise you can do burst fire or single fire. Weapons are modifiable in 2-3 stats which gives you some options. Because the combat is party based, you'll need a mix of all kinds of weapons and ranges. Shotgun people, sniper people, etc.

The game is getting upgraded to Unity 5 in the future, so you might want to backlog the game for now. If you feel like you need an RPG to play you can certainly play it now. It's a solid 80 hours.

D:OS I kept trying to go into the world and running into overleveled enemies. That doesn't happen in WL2. Plus the goals and where you should go next are more well defined in WL2. Of course, the hardest parts of WL2 are near the beginning when you're learning strategy and you're low level with really low hit accuracy.

You NEED a full party. The party kind of acts as a giant entity. You can't have a jack-of-all-trades character, you pretty much end up with 8 specialists in different areas. The party system works really well actually.

Just received my first card drop of the day (and third overall) after unintentionally joining another game, so there looks to be some merit to that argument.

Rejoined my level ~270 game afterwards, with all stats reset etc, and I'm badly under-leveled and back to contributing very little - sorry, team.

Ah, I see.
Thanks for your impressions, I guess I'll hold on until the enhanced version rolls out.
