DOOM Gameplay Demo (E3 2015)

That's exactly what people want, apparently.

Doom 1 with updated graphics would sell to everyone who played the original and still had time to play it. The interest from the mainstream players would be awful.

The older games are good because of nostalgia. People tend to forget their faults over time.
I'm excited for this DOOM, but the first 2 are still super solid FPS games

Show the masses a fast paced shooter with powerful weapons going up against badass demons without any cutscenes and flow killing melee kills and I think they'd like it.

this was underwhelming. reminds me entirely too much of Doom 3. the whole ordeal feels sluggish and the art direction feels completely bland. it looks like a fake videogame from a television show.

maybe seeing uncompressed video will change my mind, but no thank you for now.

I can't get excited for the new Doom....some really quick initial points I made...

1) Slow
2) Bullet sponges
3) Pointless executions that pause gameplay
4) Pointless slowdown that pauses gameplay on weapon switching, this is also a major issue for gameplay aesthetics in that it allows you to essentially pause to evaluate options. This isn't Doom.
5) Lack of enemies on screen at a time

Thought the multiplayer looked fun. The singleplayer seemed okay but when you have to stop to fight everyone and do edgy executions for the kids on your scripted e3 run it really slowed things down. The map editing stuff looked like it has potential.

From the sounds of the cheers during the presentation, it seems public is pleased with what they saw.

Doom 3s graphics were a shock to me when they were first shown and even when i played it... however it couldnt save the game.. sorry but after doom 3i just have to take this one with caution.

because a room of what was obviously carefully selected audience members is an easy barometer for the public at large.

So they could mind read reactions? Did they select Doom fans or not? And if they were Doom fans, which a careful selection would be targeted one would think, then why are the sentiments not the same as the proclaimed vanilla purists here?

DOOOOOOM

Looks good. If the final version looks anything like that and plays as fast then I'm all in. Looked like it was built similar to how Machine Games' Wolfenstein was.

Visuals are fantastic, but it definitely looks like it'll become -- for the lack of a better word "boring" relatively quickly depending on balance. (single player)

I have to wonder, was this the same type of gameplay the people at Quakecon 2014 saw? I remember people saying how much of a great return to form it was. Anyone here on Gaf get to see that old build? Did it differ from this new one gameplay wise?

You can probably use numbers to switch on a keyboard without the weapon wheel. It's just there for consoles.

This sounds exactly like the descriptions of the Quakecon gameplay. Lot of verticality in the level design, gory finishing animations, hell the part with the arm being used as a key was straight from the Quakecon gameplay.

Based on everything I heard about the Quakecon demo that was shown it seems to be identical to what was displayed during the first single player segment in the stream. I think people there also got an opportunity to go hands on with the game though?

because they selected people who will basically enjoy any loud, ridiculous thing thrown at them? because the energy of the room will get people to overreact at things they generally would find mundane or outright annoying in any other more traditional setting? Bethesda isn't going to select "vanilla purists" for their audience, they're going to select whomever is going to give their reveals the biggest reactions.

the point is, you're extrapolating a very small selection of people (hundreds at best, discounting press, Bethesda employees, and family/friends) into what the "public" feels about the game. that's just not a logical leap to make.

Serious Sam was all of those things and didn't exactly set the world on fire.

Personally I think the game looked amazing, as did the crowd. And no, the crowd was not hand picked to cheer for Doom.

Looks sterile...needs more of a haunting soundtrack/ambient noises...and the enemies look waaayyyyyy too easy to kill...

Looks great. Sound design is awesome (tho I'd prefer more music...it seems limited to encounters/weapon pickups). Level design looks good/fun. Pace seems a tad...slow...for a pure action game (not sure if the game is intended to go back to Dooms roots, but feels more like a hybrid between Doom & Doom 3). Monster count is a little underwhemling, but tied to the pace makes sense. Monster AI for all except the final Boss is retarded (not sure if having "smart" AI for normal enemies is desirable in a Doom game or not...but, again, if the pace is slow then my feeling is better AI would be preferable...here the minion enemies come infrequently & appear to be about as smart/challenging as a road cone).

It probably reads like I dont like what I see but in actuality I'm really excited by it. I'm not sure I'd pay full price but its a definite buy for me once it hits $20 (maybe $30 if it reviews better than I expect). I think it'll be a fun "direct to video" type experience...the equivalent of a good movie u may be underwhelmed by if u paid full price at the theater but would love for the price of a rental.

Didn't like the demo.

Slow, linear, few enemies at a time, sound of the weapons doesn't have enough punch in general.

Yup, that's classic Doom shooting gallery. Graphics and setting look nice, but it better have a good storyline to get me hooked. I'm more interested in the other Bethesda game in '16...

Same demo as Quake Con. Same reactions.

Or do they only sell Quake Con tickets to fiends and family, and those they carefully know would like loud things? I am pretty sure a good portion then were vanilla fans. Or were they CoD casuals buying them Quake Con Tix?

The original Doom was pretty loud and in your face at the time as well. Even advertised in the same way in magazines.

Exactly.

The super shotgun is easily the best weapon from a visual and sound design perspective. Thing really feels like it packs a punch. The rocket launcher is also fun-looking. The machine gun and plasma rifle sound like pea shooters; the plasma rifle manages to sound weaker than the Halo plasma rifle, which is one hell of an achievement.

The chainsaw's animations seem really annoying and repetitive. Wish they'd just have it deal fast damage over time with the enemy falling apart when their health runs out.

The trailer didn't do anything for me, but i really liked that gameplay demo. Highlight was the music/sfx, weirdly enough.
Didn't really look that fast though.

I agree with 1 and 3, but disagree with 2 (bullet sponges are awesome! Very fun dodging fire whilst shooting an enemy) and 4 (you can actually pause Doom at any time by going to the menu).

5... I can't say, because we don't know the difficulty level, but I have a feeling we won't be seeing tens of enemies at a time on screen.

I want nothing like doom 1 and 2. It looked fun even though the gameplay shows someone who knows exactly what to do. Going in to the game blankslate looks thrilling.

What a bummer. This looks a shitload like the tedious design employed in Doom 3. The enemy art design looks borderline generic, no atmosphere and those graphic effects for the item drols and melee kills are a sore-thumb eyesore.

Looks incredibly disappointing after all this wait.

This is Star Trek reboot levels of missing the point. Throw in some gore/references that will appease the fans. I'm not hugely disappointed though as it is exactly what I expected it to be.

It is really not like classic Doom at all.

Bro, BRO, they killed Daisy.

And you are NOT gonna let them get away with that.

Can you read?

My assumption/prediction was really easy to make based off the mediocre demo they showed. Game is going to get slaughtered. Easy.

They are lost with this game, I see no direction its all over the place ugly and dated. It will review poorly.

Thank god stupid shit like this isn't allowed on here.

Demo looked ok for me. A bit too much on the "look at how cool all this gore is. Look at it! So mature" - side. Trying too hard here.
Hell was fun.

Demo was underwhelming to me.

Few enemies on screen all with crap AI. The melee finisher/execution stuff disrupts the flow of combat and looked repetitive as hell even in this short demo. Highlighting the enemies when they can be finished just seems tacky as fuck, reminded me of Ryse. And the audio for the guns don't sound meaty enough. Basically the combat doesn't look satisfying to me.

And the environments seem kind of sterile.
