Phantom Blade Zero Gameplay Demo

Animations are great, it reminds me to Sekiro. Shame that it wont come out anytime soon

And the main character, does not seem to talk right?

Young gamers these days have been indoctrinated by Souls game, it's ingrained deep into their subconscious. Any game with a dark setting and melee weapons is automatically assumed to be a Soulslike in their minds.

PBZ is a fast paced hack&slash action game where the primary defensive mechanic is blocking, and the offensive system revolves around combining two buttons (light attack and heavy attack) to create movesets/ combos. This kind of combination system was used in 90% of action games before the Souls series even existed—yet now it's being labeled as Soulslike? Absolutely ridiculous.

There's only one mechanic that S-Game has confirmed to be inspired by Souls game in this game: the interconnected, multi-layered map design.

Game looks like a good old hack'n Slash

99% of gamers "looks like Souls"...wtf?
They just see a lock-on system and instantly think 'Soulslike' without taking another second to think and observe.

All of the media impressions about this game have said it's more like a mix of Ninja Gaiden and Metal Gear Revengeance.

Biggest release next year? Come on now, it looks pretty decent but its a Souls like/Nioh/Gaiden clone.

We've played this game already a 1000 times.
Ya GTA6 will shit all over this and I'm hyped to play both.

Plus game awards will release 10 new games to be hyped for, AND dusk bloods is likely next year.

Saying every game is soulslike only make you guys look like idiots. Is Hidetaka Miyazaki your Dad? You just "Everything is Soulslike", and the same time complain "There are too many Soulslike games".

To be fair to the OP he said biggest release after GTA.

But we have stuff like Resident Evil, Onimusha, Gears, Mario?, Mudang etc plus all the stuff we don't know about. Maybe it turns out awesome, then great. Not seeing anywhere near the hype Wukong had for example though.

Try typing something coherent if you want to insult us.

The Chinese community is really hyped about this game, ofc, not to the same level as Wukong. But if Wukong can sell 20 million copies in its first month, then 5 to 7 million copies for this game within the same time frame is definitely within reach.

The graphics and movement do look really nice i'll give it that.

Looks like its a UE5 game?

Not to mention that quite a few B-game/AA-game action-adventure combat before soulslikes was nothing to write home about.

I think people have forgotten what things used to be like. Aside from the very best examples from Clover/Platinum Games and a few standout franchises (Ninja Gaiden, God of War, and DMC) it was either:
  • Dynasty Warriors but more braindead
  • A more shallow version of a beat-em-up
  • Tap 'attack, attack, attack' to do your one 3-hit combo over and over and awkwardly run around a bit with a bad camera to dodge an attack
  • The King's Field style simple sword swing animation that you would have to spam
  • A melee combat game with awkward third person shooter controls (thanks, X360 gen!)

China is great at copying things, which is a skill in and of itself. But like all their other creative outlets: animation, comics, movies etc, they just regurgitate the same thing over and over and over again.

That being said, their existing library of literature to pull from is massive. The day they come up with an original concept, everyone else is screwed.

Please stop calling everything soulslike...
If it takes more than 3 hits to kill a basic enemy or be killed by a basic enemy, then it's not a souls like, it's an action game with a stamina bar that takes some inspiration from souls.
This game is a lot more Bayonetta than souls to me.

The protagonist looks like the villain Jine Udô in the anime Rurouni Kenshin.

Better quality:

20m copies were just in the first month. By early 2025, it had already reached 25 million, and by now , especially after a 20% sale, I'd guess Wukong has sold around 30- 35 m copies.

// It's honestly laughable when some people say PBZ lacks creativity and looks like thousands of other games. Can you name me one game that has this kind of combat and setting?

A unique setting like ubisoft games are doing and they still lack originality.

This looks really good. The combat is like a Jackie Chan movie on steroids, with a dark souls theme.
I was getting exited for it, but couldn't find it on Steam. And it seems it was removed and it will use it's own launcher.
FFS, as if we needed more of this crap on PC.

Lol no it really don't come on now.
This looks more in line with Wuchang, more grindy combat, cooler animation, but the gameplay looks the same.
Can still be great. But unique? Nah

You have to be joking. This looks on a whole other level to Wuchang.

Its derivative sure, but at least it has a bit of style and individuation in the implementation.

watching the full Chinese demo video. They just keep improving it, combat at times looks too good to be true. This is the demo they'll be hosting at gamescom, unlikely to go public, but by the looks of it, we might begetting the release date next month

I just hope that there's much more variety of environement and especially enemies. Everything looks samey with a gray'ish brown texture, and enemies are all humanoid faceless things.

Im more hyped for Crimson Desert, but this one is looking really good as well. China and Korea been cooking hard these action games. About time the talent they have stoped focusing on MMOs and mobile games.

I literally cannot tell the difference between games like this and stuff like Ghost of Tsushima, Nioh, Demons Souls, etc. They bore me to tears.
No offence but you need get your eyes checked….how the fuck Demons Souls looks anything similar to Nioh, Ghost of Tsushima and this game!?

You must be dead inside to watch this shit and just say "it's just another soulslike".

If this was made by from the reactions would be much different...

Games that heavily rely upon grounded gun mechanics generally have a lot less depth than games with melee weapons. Shooting mechanics can become quite repetitive comparatively
otoh, shooting mechanics can involve much more strategy afa positioning (both your own & enemies) than melee weapons. not to mention, pirates also use swords?...
