Didn't someone say that the whole FF7 overarching storyline and mythos have been completely retconned and reinterpreted by games such as Crisis Core and the films? etc. So much so that the original FF7 storyline doesn't really fit in.

FF spin offs mostly just dance around the events of FFVII, you can ignore all of them and the core game is pretty much untouched.
