I fucking hate MGS4 and didn't like Peace Walker.

You can easily discuss Metal Gear in a negative light, but just saying, "lol just sudu-intelligence bullshit" is simply trollish and adds zero to the discussion really.
 
Absolutely gorgeous visuals. The game looks incredible. Between this and Fallout 4 my education will suffer!

That's generally the reaction when you call celebrated Auteurs fake-deep, especially without backing up your claim. Try it in a thread about Kubrick, Lynch, Tarantino etc. and see what the reaction is like.
 
Now is as good as a time as any to blackout MGS V until launch. Kojima has shown us all that we are supposed to see until we play it and I feel like Konami is going to spoil something with an inferior launch trailer and previews.
 
I'm not buying into the language theme. It seems like we will have to suspend disbelief imagining some weapon that obliterates the "lingua franca". The details are missing but it seems like the skeleton of the plot in the trailer hints at something ignorant of linguistics.

We don't know the full story but we do know that by the end of the year, a lot of his core staff will be leaving with him. If they find away to continue working together outside of Konami, the result will be spectacular.
 
I loved it. Based on the trailer, looks like the series is returning to the goofier/supernatural/funky technology style of MGS1 and MGS2. I love the whole series, but it has gotten progressively serious-er (especially with MGS: PW and MGS: GZ). I'm down for a change of tone back to the way it was before.

Just feels like an unnecessary side project in the universe that really didn't need to be made. Fleshing out unimportant characters and wrapping them up in a story that hasn't been referenced in any of the bread and butter titles feels lame, and no matter how many times they throw Kaz, Paz and whoever other C-tier names people at me I just can't get invested or excited in them.

MGS3 is one of my favourite games of all time, it told a simple story about Big Boss's relationship to The Boss, which ultimately shaped MGS1, 2 and 4.

How this connects to everything else I don't know, and it's so arbitrary and disconnected from everything else (in both characters and tone) that it fails to get me at all interested.

The only bit of the trailer that grabbed me was the ending, and I still didn't fully understand it (but appreciate it's probably to do with the clones).

You know this game comes out in a few months and other than the dev team, people have no clue what's going on. I can understand your lack of interest but to call it an unnecessary side project before it's even out seems a little silly.

See guys, this is smart criticism. I feel the same way, like canon is weighing down something that would be a lot better if it were a new IP. I felt that way about MGS4 and PW too. Why can't it be approached like a Soulslike, where each game *plays* the similiar, but is completely seperate storywise?
 
Ive been avoiding seeing anything from the game till release for about a year now, but couldn't resist to see this trailer.

Awesome, awesome trailer but can't help feeling sad it's going to be the final Kojima MGS...

On the one hand, yes I agree. It all appears quite bloated and unnecessary.

On the other:
- every iteration has looked like that since 2. All looked ridiculous and unnecessary. Yet look how 2 and 3 turned out? (Yes 2 was still super bloated, but a classic in its own way.)
- isnt the point that the end of this game will line up full-circle with the Metal Gear 1 and 2? Ie if MGS3 is the beginning of Snake's fall after the death of The Boss, Phantom Pain is the end of that fall - which marks the beginning of Solid Snake's ascent.

Idk man. It has the potential to be quite poignant. But of course it's all in the execution - which we will see on 1 Sept

At points it's referencing:

The concept of 'language as a virus', an idea that explores the origins and nature of language, was introduced by renowned junkie and counter cultural icon, William S Burroughs. This arguably is the precursor to Dawkins' Meme Complex.

The largely discredited Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, which suggests the structure of language affects our understanding of the world. This is a key component in Orwell's '1984'.

There appear to be a number of reflections/dopplegangers across TPP and GZ; a favourite subject of classic literature like Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde and The Double by Dostoyevsky.

There are also allusions to Moby Dick (revenge, huge fucking flaming nuclear whale) and Lord of the Flies (pig's head, Eli, Child Soldiers).

Two of the characters, Codewalker and Quiet, are language themed. The latter of which is deprived of expressing herself via spoken word.

Big Boss himself is deprived of language due to his injuries. He doesn't speak as much and he forgets Russian, requiring translators to assist him during gameplay.

Skullface is a character whose mother tongue is usurped and replaced by a succession of different foreign forces. They take over his home country and force their way of speaking (and thus, the trailer suggests, their worldview) on to the people. Arguably, the Russians in Afghanistan are doing that to the locals too.

It sounds like a pretty big through theme to me.

Plus, I doubt there will be anything as crass as a literal weapon that wipes out words. Kojima is a nutter but he made MGS2, which is thematically perfect in my book. MGS2 didn't use a 'word-gun', it had AI and nanomachines as censors. I think we'll see the birth of that concept with Zero's 'Intelligence Without Borders' concept from GZ. There was, after all, an AI Pod in part of the trailer.
 
So "Those who Don't exist" have the same invisibility/materializing power as Quiet? At least the female ones in trailer show the same skin-less effect I guess...

That's fair, and as you can imagine I've not followed (nor dissected) every morsel of information, image or footage released thus far, but I still feel like everything we do know is pulling the game and the franchise away from anything that I've invested myself in previously.

The nod to child cloning, ultimately leading to the three BB clones, is something that interests me. I suppose I just feel like this has always been a part of the story that has veered from clever plot building to outright nonsense. I've never really understood the whole "Big Boss runs off to create an army on an oil rig" bit and seeing that blown up and thrown into the usual crazy-Kojima mix has made it even more absurd.

The ultimate problem though is that this is the fifth full game in the franchise and I only care about a single character, one that has a new voice actor that sounds completely different to the rest of the series and has motivations that I just do not understand.

Exactly.

It feels like such a side-project in the franchise that it really could've been given a totally new title. It has so little to do with the other games in the franchise.
 
Really like that Kojima is going for a more complex theme this time than "lol deterrence". The people laughing at the game for themes of language need to learn them some history. There's a reason why totalitarian governments try to suppress languages, they are incredibly potent weapons.

I'm starting to think those boobs aren't boobs, and are most likely what ever that cancer growth seen right before it.
