Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Microsoft has me swaying in their favor right now and I've only touched based on 1/3 of their announcements. I've re-bought 360's just so I could finish my back catalog.

just listening to Xbox@E3 and they ran through the BC stuff. Seems to be running games in a virtual 360 under a software emulator. So in theory it sounds like new games could be added quickly. And they committed to releasing all first party games where possible (sounds like licensing might be an issue for some games)

That is a bit surprising for me. Although the 360 was DX based and had a PC style GPU, it was Nvidia Vs AMD on XB1, and also the CPU was PPC based, not x86. Given the relative weakness of the current gen CPUs, I wonder if they're recompiling anything?
360's GPU was designed by ATI...

Wow, this might make me get a One sooner than I thought.

I wonder if they will/can do this with Windows 10 as well?

Can someone who has managed to download a 360 game onto their Xbox One do the following?:
*Go to My Games and Apps
*Hover over a 360 title
*Press RT, LT, and Select (the view button?) over the title
*See if x64 is mentioned in the name.

Most Xbox One games have _x64_ in the title somewhere. If the 360 games have been recompiled they may also.

It's also a cool way to see what the games are named internally. Forza Horizon 2 is Anthem_1.0.0.47_x64_gibberish

Mass Effect has x64.

Omg the one thing that I didn't think would make me buy an Xbox one now I'm seriously considering. If they had just announced shenmue 3...

Installing Perfect Dark, n+, Mass Effect, Banjo Kazooie and HexicHD. I'm gonna need to add an external HDD a little sooner than I expected.

Will give any opinions if they perform better or worse. If I don't say anything, assume they just played normally as expected.

Gotta love that rushed crappy phone quality pic

Banjo Kazooie is also x64.

Tried PDZ and it said install disc, but apparently it's not compatible at the moment. VERY SAD :(

Heh, I just realized that I almost impulse purchased that Zuma knockoff that launched on Xbox One recently because I remember loving it back in the day, and now I'll just be able to redownload the original :P

Quick question:

I don't know if they said it but how would you be able to play these 360 games? Do you need the disc to unlock the ability to play it on XBO or, if it's something you've already played on your account and it's offered, you can just download it and play it?

Downloaded the update, not sure how to get my digital download for Mass Effect.

On the far right of "games" in "my games and apps" it'll appear in the "ready to download" section.

It's been kinda wonky all day and sometimes nothing shows up so give it some time.

The original disc is required to play games you have on disc. Digital goes off your account's ownership.

So stuff like Marvel vs Capcom is never going to get approval because of licensing issues, right?

Which sucks because it's not like they're putting it up for sale for anybody. You still need to either have bought it digitally or own the disc anyway.

This is the system seller they have needed.

Do people really believe this?

Did BC make the PS3 sell like mad when it had it?

Do people really spend a bunch of money to gain the ability to play games they already had?

I definitely remember "PS3 has no games" people mocking those who talked about how big the PS2 library was.

This is pretty cool, despite the fact that I don't think I have that many 360 games that are supported.

I just realized that this is what they'll be using for the 360 games in the Rare collection, wonder if we'll get original Xbox BC too? There is Grabbed by the Ghoulies in that collection too.

Whoa, there it is. It's not emulation, but rather compiled to x64. Makes sense as emulation would have been too slow.

No. It is emulation. MS have given press interviews about it - they explicitly call it emulation. I went for a job interview with the guys who created the PowerPC emulation.

I almost thought about buying a 360 a few times just for arcade titles, but this is the biggest win out of E3 so far. I have access to a few games again because I no longer had the proper hardware to play them. I already owned a X1, but this scored big points in my book, they found a way to make it happen. Sony will need to bring it.

Anyone wanna hook up a friendly Xbox Gaffer with an Invite code? ;D

Really sounds awesome though, will allow for some fun 360 Games in my dorm room!

I don't think that's the case.

Dunno if I'm not allowed to ask this, hope not. I was in the preview program on Xbox 360 for several years, and I don't recall ever getting an email or anything about participating on Xbox One. How did some of you get in, is it not something that transferred?
