This isn't about fanboyism. It's about being sick of them shitting all over everything all the time for no reason other than their pervasive cynicism. This is at least 6 years in the making of seeing them with the same tepid "everything sucks" responses to stuff at E3.

Basically my point as well.

You can be level headed without being "those guys".

High after Sony's conference? Tune into Giant Bomb for your shocking pail of water dumped over your head into reality. You SHOULD BE DEPRESSED ABOUT THE STATE OF VIDEO GAMES.

Seriously I love these guys but do they ever know how to downplay exciting announcements.

E3 is all smoke and mirrors though. I mean, what are we really talking about? Who "won" a trade show? Sony just seems better at playing this particular game than everyone else.

I get some of their complaints with regards to first party offerings, but there is a point where you are not in touch with the average consumer. Your average consumer is not saying "Why get a PS4 when I can just build a PC for $800?!?"

Exactly. E3 is a fun show for a gamer. It should not be taken seriously. Most of it is announcements of games you won't own for 3 years. In that 3 years it could be delayed for another 5 or end up terrible.

If you take e3 seriously, you are fool.

He'll look at Nintendo and the whole Zelda falling on its face.

Exactly this, Jeff is in dreamland if he thinks this is what people are asking themselves.

couldnt have said it better
It's called being realistic. Being skeptical is what journalists are supposed to do. When shit comes out and is actually good, they praise plenty of stuff. People are just mad that they bring discussion down to Earth instead of being an endless hype train. Which is exactly the opposite of what people should want from video game journalists in the first place.

Where did they say "everything sucks". That's just hyperbole. They were just somber and tepid in their response after a long day. They were like that after every conference. All they did today was say "well that's kinda interesting" or cracking joke after joke like you would expect.

People just get weirdly sensitive when it comes to Sony even if they treat all game stuff this way.

I feel like if we traced the arc of what games have been shown at E3 for the last 3 years and what sort of games they became, the GB guys would be doing consumers a disservice if they didn't approach these conferences with a huge amount of skepticism.

This weird anti-anti-hype culture around games has been really frustrating, especially when people attach themselves to specific companies.

Why aren't they jumping up and down with joy. Fake it if you must, my high depends on it.

What an interesting display of certain people in this thread requiring a positive confirmation from the guys to match their own excitement, and when they are unable to receive said matching feelings they go to insulting the Giant Bomb crew in various ways, as if it affects them personally that someone isn't as excited as they are.

Neogaf gonna neogaf.

What shitting ? They said "this looks cool" or "this looks really great" to nearly all announcements. It's just that after all is said and done, there's nothing much coming this year first party wise on PS4, and the third party stuff is also on PC/Xbox one.

Also the "big" stuff is not coming anytime soon. FF7 ( also on PC ) is probably a ways off, TLG is still not out, and Shenmue is just an ad for a kickstarter campaign ( also on PC )

No Bloodborne DLC announced...

They said LATTER this year and i count it as the second half of the year and june is not. Don't get sucked into Brads pace here man, what people fear is the legacy of the Brad on innocent people and not Brad himself.

Yeah it seems weird. People on here are excited if that's what you want. Just enjoy that and don't rely on GB to validate you. They've been in this business for years and play a lot of games. Making them jump for joy isn't gonna be easy for any company but that's alright. It's not like they don't enjoy games. They're just giving their honest feelings.

Or maybe they just represent people who are not excited every time a remake or sequel is announced.

It really is like seeing people who are prisoners in their career path. Where's the passion? Where's the enthusiasm?

Their job description doesn't read "be enthusiastic about all games."

It's why it's so hard to grow this medium. You're not going to see shit thrown at book and film critics for having no enthusiasm about the latest blockbusters.

Seriously guys, everything they said was valid. Sony presser wasn't amazing just because it had a kickstarter and The Last Guardian. I'm as excited about those two titles as the rest of you guys, but that doesn't change the fact that overall the conference was lacking in first party stuff.

The Last Guardian
Horizon
Until Dawn
Dreams
Uncharted 4
That cutesy Final Fantasy game
Uncharted Collection not even talked about

Then why watch them? You know you don't have to right?

It's funny, having watched all their E3 streams now, the vibe of the room felt about the same as their critique of Sony's conference today.

You rarely see a game shown at these conferences that they jump out of their seats in joy for. You get restrained enthusiasm -- cautious and reluctant, and when something sucks about a conference or a company's plan for their platform or slate of games, they'll say it. If they truly like something, they'll say it (they all were really into Horizon Zero Dawn, but that's not enough I guess).

I just find it ridiculous that all this "they are so cynical" blow up from a bunch of folks here happened now, and because the nostalgia-wank of FFVII remake, Shenmue 3, and The Last Guardian has reached its peak. Where were you people when they were talking about the other conferences? Did you see something different here?

It's really weird how people want gaming journalists and personalities to 'hype up' or be 'excited' about gaming news. That's literally the opposite of what you should want.

Giant Bomb has always been honest with everyone. Their personal biases are always going to exist as they do in critics of other mediums.

ETA: Oh yeah, they're also probably fucking exhausted after being in front of and talking to cameras for 10 hours.

Huh? They got excited about plenty of games this e3. Mario Maker, ReCore, Rare Replay, Horizon, Fallout 4, and more. Just because they're talking realistically about the conferences doesn't mean they're not excited about games.

Whiny and childish. That's how it comes off.

It's Final Fantasy 7

Shit's going to get weird fast with people

"man I hate when people are unnecessarily negative about things, I'm going to complain about it to the first people who will listen"

good night thread

Why aren't the jumping up and down with joy. Fake it if you must, my high depends on it.

Why go from one extreme to another?

There are shades of grey. You can be level headed with constructive concerns without sounding like you hate your job in gaming journalism.

They tread the line of, "man gaming sucks" (be concerned) narrative far too often. That is of course unless you build a Stream Machine by Jeff's response.

Except you are posting this on the type of forum where this exact question would be asked by a significant amount of people. About the type of userbase that Giant Bomb specifically services.

Exactly. Giantbomb feels like one of the most natural sites when it comes to reactions and stuff.

if you haven't figured out, over the course of 6 years, that you don't like the site... what the hell are you doing with your life?

probably worth pointing out again that this thread is for the GB audience to talk about E3, not an open door to air grievances with GB and shit up the thread

Incorrect, this is a place for NeoGAF members who watch GiantBomb content to talk about Giant Bomb and E3 together. They are not above criticism and this isn't your special club.

People sometimes get the urge to prove Someone else wrong and when they don't have the means they get really angry about it is what my impression on GB HATE is. Keep the guests coming then someone else has other opinions guys.

I'm watching their EA post conference right now and is positive.... OH WAIT ITS EA
so people don't care LOL

Crap. I had to pause just as the Sony conference ended, and I tried to resume to watch the the post show and my browser crashed. Now I can't go back into the stream, says it's over. Yet the other conferences are available. I guess it's not archived right on youtube or something right now. Anyone seeing the same thing?

Seriously. These pressers are fun to follow on places like GAF, but don't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

In case you've missed it they actually do like some stuff on the sony presser.

Do you think they'll be as enthusiastic for polygonal-based game, Shenmue 3, compared to their reaction to pixel-based games, Mighty No. 9 and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night?

didn't mark tell a story last podcast about him going over to his friend's house to play shenmue and being brutally disappointed after the hype? Or maybe that was jj.

Why aren't the jumping up and down with joy. Fake it if you must, my high depends on it.

No, but seriously, I need SOME enthusiasm in my enthusiast press.

Alex: The last Guardian being shown should concern us.

Brad: I hate FF7.

Jeff: Horizon is cool BUT it's made by Guerilla.

Jeff actually criticized Uncharted 4 for having a vehicle chase since they hadn't done that before "That was kinda weird, I dunno."

Every minor positive was met with ho hums and negatives.

The Last Guardian
Horizon
Until Dawn
Dreams
Uncharted 4
That cutesy Final Fantasy game
Uncharted Collection not even talked about
- Last Guardian is God knows when next year.
- Horizon is God knows when any year.
- Until Dawn was shown like two seconds.
- We don't even know what Dreams fully is yet. I don't know why anyone would see it and be hyped about it.
- Uncharted 4 look cool, but is again, over a year away.
- FF wasn't exclusive or first party. It was timed.
- Exactly, so why would they talk about it on a post E3 conference.

Their main point was that the rest of 2015 was dry for first party Sony games. This list only backs their point.

Indeed. Trailers and PR material (including E3) are there to tell me what's right about a game. Critics are there to tell me what's wrong about them. People need to stop looking to the press for validation.
