The Last Guardian re-revealed at E3 2015! Up Yours Y2Kev!

I'm surprised this thread is so small. Even though it was only a couple minutes of gameplay, ppl in the predictions thread were saying even a trailer would be mad hype.

this is the truth about the series vocal hardcore few but the average consumer could care less let alone even know what the game and series is.

It was never going to be a big event, the game has a niche appeal. I think SotC never sold over 1M copies, which is a shame but the game is not for everyone. Ueda games are not for everyone are for people that like certain games or at least don't run away from games from being different.

tbh, I think it's because there were a few other megatons dropped. Still, very very very excited.

All i care is *I* will be able to play it. Fuck the rest of the world. Lol.

I also think the silence is partly because it looks mostly the same.

Looks underwhelming. All these years in development and this is what it looks like? I still think they couldn't get this running well on the PS3 and that's why we didn't get it.

The trailer looked gorgeous in HD on my 50" TV. Interesting style blending where the environment is realistic and the characters are more artistic. Def way cleaner looking than it could have possibly been on PS3.

Looks great, but I hope the other puzzles and platforming make a bit more sense. The first part where the dog thing jumps across, why didn't the kid just get on his back and jump across as well? At least the next part explained why the progression was halted as it was scared of the thing, but that first part just sort of broke that particular logic that the kid couldn't get across to the other side.

What makes you so sure he couldnt have? I am sure we will all do many things while feeling out the game that in hindsight would not make good for a speed run.

Holy fuck I slept through the conference because 3 am, but did I die in my sleep? Fuck off is this real!

Edit: Shenmue 3 kickstarter as well... Yeah I died in my sleep.

I'm so so happy that it's alive! I never lost hope!
I don't care for the graphics. I think it looks great, and it's not a priority for me.

The gameplay wasn't exciting, but I have full trust in Ueda.
I wasn't around the internet when ICO was shown, but I don't see how you can make that look very compelling as well.

I'm also glad that it looks very similar to the first trailer. Yes, you can say "6 years and nothing changed?!", but that's a huge plus IMO. I loved the look of the game then, and I love it now.

Seeing Shu presenting Ueda also filled me with confidence that it's still his game.

Looks as good as ever. I never expected it to be dead anyway; it was clear to Sony they held a treasure trove in their hands that would win them lots of people if it ever materialised to a good game, so it never made any sense to simply cancel it.

genDesign is his new company with partners from Team ICO I think.

Yes, they're working on Last Guardian and some other sci-fi/fantasy projects (which seem to involve a frog-monster-thing and a headless robot).

Still hard to believe this was announced 6 years ago.

So glad Sony got the announcement out of the way, right away!

The game seems to be exactly the same from when we last saw it, but the only thing that disappointed me really was the boy's voice. Got annoying to me after a while.

I love the atmosphere in this team's games; I can't wait to get immersed in this on a lazy weekend afternoon. I think I'll be replaying ICO and SOTC before this launches.

Great post. People complaining about the graphics or "boring" gameplay just don't get it. Not every game has to be instantly gratifying. Not every game has to be all action. Not every game has to require skill or fit the conventions of a 'game'. And not every gamer has to constantly fill XP bars and level up to be entertained.

Sometimes, the state of just existing in these incredible worlds is better. Appreciating all the facets of the art and game design coming together, and just letting it wash over you as you lose yourself. This game will probably make us shed real tears, just as ICO and SotC did. I'd take that over volumetric lighting or whatever the fuck.

Maybe the game doesn't do any of those things and still looked boring. Maybe criticizing the types of games people may like to deflect criticism of TLG is the worst thing you could do.

alright enough though.. god damn give us a date!
I'm amazed that they showed this without an exact date. FFS.

Looks like the remastered PS3 game it is, and the boy's animation in particular was weird in places (check his feet as he pushes the tower.) The time spent in development hell shows in the trailer, so what the heck is the rest of the game like.

Still, it's actually happening and for all we know they still have 18 months to work on it, so one step at a time. :)

Yes, because saying, 'Not every game has to do this thing' is criticizing and the worst thing you could do.

Honestly, your response just makes his point more poignant.

The result of the aggressive conditioning of the last generation has been devastating.

It's kind of sad to me that people are down on the game because it looks "boring."

I understand now why every trailer for everything is super bass, explosions, dramatic music, explosions, jumping off of things, explosions, and a large something or other roaring at the camera while it shakes and blurs up and smash cuts to title.

The Team Ico games ooze atmosphere and history. They are as much about calm and stillness as they are the journey of the characters. We praise Dark Souls and Demon's Souls and Bloodborne for how little it holds our hands with narrative, well, Ico and SOTC took that to huge levels. Everything about the game world is left to you inferring its history from the environment and the superb art design.

Some games you just have to sit down and get lost in. I remember the first time I saw Demon's Souls, I thought it looked horrible. Horrible framerate, horrible movement/controls, clunky combat, mediocre visuals, etc, but I ended up taking a chance on it and buying it. And man, I was so wrong. I fell in love with the game, and it, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne are some of my favorite games.

I can't speak to how The Last Guardian is going to play, but if it's anything like Ico or Shadow (it looks to be leaning more towards Ico), it's going to be immersive. It may not be flashy as far as setpieces go, but the art design and atmosphere alone looks on par with their previous work. That is to say, fantastic.

This is the first time I see footage of this game (I'm old, my mind might be slipping). Such beautiful looking artwork and game play. Really looking forward to this.

I feel like this isn't a game that's meant to be demo'd to an audience, that's the main reason people found it "boring". It's a puzzle game, it's something you just have to play and experience. Watching someone do puzzles and interact with the environment in a slow way isn't exactly entertaining but it's fun when you're doing it.

Agreed. But I still found a few moments to be fairly exhilarating, although both had to do with those last second jumps before the platforms disappeared.

The only reason this thread is so quiet is because it got overshadowed by FF7:R and Shenmue3. It would have been much larger if that was the only big announcement but all 3? No chance.

What makes you think that a games basic requirement is to hit AAA levels of graphics? If this is the only thing that you are concerned about that I believe you just missed the point of games like this.

That's because every criticism here is extremely shallow, focusing on the aspect that has no relevance to the subject such as the graphics. Not once, did Team ICO in any capacity has claimed to compete the boundaries of tech and graphics. They are an insulated team within a studio of different teams. If SONY wanted a financial backing that could compete with Naughty Dog or Sony Santa Monica than Team ICO would've formed it's own studio and not under the umbrella of StudioJapan. If graphics alone is basis for the game's criticism than you are in the wrong thread and you were looking for the wrong area of interest.

You can take a slice of gameplay from ICO or SotC and call it boring as well. That doesn't stop people, including myself, from loving it to bits.

Ueda's games aren't for everyone, that's really all there is to it.

Yup. Honestly imo, ico and sotc trailer not really that hot as well, but the moment you're playing...boy that was magical

Completely underwhelmed.

I feel like the Last Guardian was shitcanned years ago and only dredged up because GAF and others wouldn't let it die. Like the game literally sat dormant till a few months ago and Sony engineers stitched the code base back together to make the game work.

That said, I'm more than happy to check it out when it releases...
But I was getting some serious Ico vibes from the gameplay... Nothing wrong with Ico, it's just not my thing.

This game better get 10/10 from every single review. Crashed neogaf for good 15 minutes.

On a more serious note, I am really happy for the fans that have been waiting for it. But honestly the gameplay looked extremely underwhelming. Not judging the game at this point, but the hardcore fans must raise their concerns at this stage of development in order to provide a genuine feedback for the developer. Hyping the game anymore is not going to be beneficial for anyone.

Of course graphically it won't be as groundbreaking as when it was first introduced as a PS3 game, because it was clearly not intended to be a PS4 game to begin with. Still it looks very good, and we obviously haven't seen much.

As expected the gameplay seems very much based on the communication between the boy and the bird-thing, and how they find ways to overcome that difficulty to get out of trouble. Seems interesting. I understand why some people might find it boring, but to think of it, ICO too seemed "boring" based on its concept, and it still turned out a fantastic game, so I guess we will see. I have lots of faith on Ueda and his team.

I am finally glad we can put TLG rumors and debacles to rest. It was fun while it lasted but it was also getting pretty tiresome. Y2Kev must be relieved. :P

While there is a niche for atmosphere heavy games with minimal gameplay, as evidenced by Gone Home and Dear Esther, its not what I'm looking for. Shadow of the Colossus was a beautiful game dripping with atmosphere that also had fun and unique gameplay. I can't name another game where the objective is to climb massive golem like entities and slaughter them one by one. But The Last Guardian... the gameplay just looks derivative and by the numbers. Push a cart, trigger and event. Jump from one platform to another. The atmosphere might be something you could lose yourself in, but for me personally, and I'm sure for many others in the thread, without engaging gameplay the quaint and peaceful atmosphere lends itself to boredom instead of tranquility.

This is definitely skewing more towards Ico than SOTC. I'm excited to play a another game from Ueda even if it isn't as groundbreaking as his other games.

I don't think TLG is about gameplay as much as friendship and bonding. The jumping by the ledge, calling your friend, realizing what was bothering him, the leap of faith- all of that seems to suggest a game where beating it involves knowing your partner on an deep level to figure out how to proceed in the game.

Maybe I'm getting too hopeful, but this seems like a very different kind of game than most others we see. My more cynical side says that almost every other games that have attempted this type of player/AI interaction have failed. At this point, I'm just happy it's coming out. Maybe that's the point. Only real complaint might be the graphics, but I didn't expect game changing graphics from a game so long in development.

To the people who are disappointed or found it boring, I have to wonder, what did you expect? Is this the first footage that you have seen of the game? Anyone who has seen gameplay on the internet and was still interested should have nothing to be disappointed about (except for maybe the graphics).

I'm happy this is back, but I'll be cautiously optimistic.
And not having a firm release date is just a major problem for me. 2016 is way to vague, They should have waited until the game was nearly finished due to its history.

Maybe the demo was boring, but the fact that I was watching new footage of THE LAST GUARDIAN had me like this:
