Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

sorry, this has probably been answered several times already. But there wasnt an answer in that xbox video. Do you have to keep the disc in the console after you download a game? I am assuming you do, or people could exploit the hell out of it

Yes.

Have they addressed how DLC will be handled? So far it seems like none of the games with DLC available have their DLC up yet on X1.

If it has been addressed, have they addressed how DLC install discs will be handled?

If you buy the digital 360 version, you still get the x1 version free, so if you get the digital version by putting in the 360 disc, wouldn't that give you the x1 version too?

No. That deal only works with digital copies. If you use a disc to emulate on X1, you don't get a full licensed digital copy, you still need the disc in. So effectively, exactly it's like installing your 360 copy on your 360, just on a One now.

So yeah, in short no. And again, Destiny isn't on the list right now anyway.

I doubt any publisher (exept Microsoft) will approve a 360 game with has a One version or Remaster of it coming .... ;-)

It's not like an emulated copy is at all the same thing as a remaster or general X1 version. It's still the 360 version of the game, with the same 360 fidelity, with the possibility of new glitches and performance issues.

Edit: Oops, back-to-back post, my bad.

Grabbed some screenshots so more can see how it looks:

And a quick video showing what a game looks like when you boot into a 360 game on the XB1: http://youtu.be/BdgedZynd_4

Any irregularities in the video are due to testing the Windows 10 Xbox One game streaming, which also released today for Preview members. It works good, though as you can tell capturing is a little testy.

I'm not an xbox fan, but this is damn impressive.

Really interested in how MS managed to pull this off technically.
Even if it did require re-compilation for XB1. How are they managing to handle the different CPU/Memory clock-speeds/latencies on a fairly weak x86 cpu?
Didn't the 360s eDRAM have a much higher bandwidth than even the XB1's eSRAM?

Would love an in depth explanation of how they achieved this.

For people asking if there are any improvements, here is my experience with Viva Pinata:

  • It took forever to install. Really - a hell of a long time but the wait may well have felt longer because of my anticipation.
  • As expected, once installed it loads completely from the HDD - there was no noise from the disc tray. I did not try loading without the disc though. I'd be interested to know if you need the disc in the tray.
  • The load times were significantly decreased.
  • This may well be my eyes playing tricks on me but the game looked bigger, sharper and brighter than ever before. This is not a repeat of the lame Xbox OG > 360 emulation. It looks great!
  • I remember having some framerate issues on my 360 with Pinata. They were gone. I will play more later though and poulate the garden - just to give it a good test.

I can't wait to try more games. I missed a lot of 360 games last gen because of WoW and I never fancied going back to the 360 controller after getting the X1. This is massive for me. And They had better do Deadpool cos I wanna go back and play it again.

The only significant thing to come out of E3 so far for me, (and an amazing feat of engineering that only MS could pull off) will convince many 360 owners to stick with Xbox to keep their library but once they've upgraded i'm not sure how much they'll use it once they've got there shiny new console and games.

Will help if they get the old Call of Duty's on there as I notice they are all still popular.

Would really love if Xbox 360 games get their own section in the Xbox One storefront, and this pushes a lot of publishers to add digital versions of their previously disc-only games

Also I hope it pushes folders in the Xbox library, so I can quickly separate out 360 games and Xbox One games

Yep, I agree with this. Maybe start a feedback on Xbox Uservoice?

Thank you for the update! This is really awesome news to look forward to this holiday season!

Keep in mind, yo're not installing anything off the disc, you're downloading the entire thing from Xbox Live. The disc is simply a key

Playing Banjo Kazooie on a PC that's streaming from an Xbox One that is emulating an Xbox 360.

What a time to be alive.

Just recorded this on xb1:

viva piñata TIP: https://vid.me/e/sov7

Nice!!! Thanks for the vid, this is awesome!

Btw Phil told me that he's been emphasizing that games like blue dragon and lost odyssey are also supported and working as expected.

Omfg... I loved Lost Odyssey but I had it before Microsoft allowed HD installs so the load times were death. This is fucking unreal...well played Microsoft.

Wow! This might be a game changer for me, I switched from 360 to PS4, but I'm feeling really ...meh.. after that conference. This might be a good reason to switch back again (my 360 broke, but is still have tons of games for it.)

For those wondering - I picked up Mass Effect digitally using Xbox.com website, it seemlessly appeared on my Xbox One under My Games -> Ready to Install, and then it just plays like any other Xbox One game.

I think once they roll this out to mass media like imagine having huge banners in Gamestop's 360 section "NOW PLAYABLE ON XBOX ONE" the Xbox One hardware will see a significant jump in NPD numbers. If it will really work like insert & (download) & play for all the people with massive 360 libraries they will really think about buying an Xbox One - even if they are currently playing all new gen games on PS4. I can even imagine dudes buying Xbox One only for 360 titles.

EDIT

I'll grab an Xbox One this holiday just for this feature. No joke.

Assuming it stays a quality emulation across a wide variety of titles

There you go.

Very smart move MS. Hopefully Dark Souls 1 and Dead Space 2/3 are playable :|

This is why I'm really hoping they move to make all GWG backwards compatible. It instantly makes the service so much better for Xbox One owners.
