SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

If they thought there was enough demand, it would have been made right after Shenmue 2.

Right after Sega dropped out of the console race and having very little money? It's not like the games sold poorly to cancel the franchise. It was Sega's past mistake for not making Shenmue 3 sooner.

I think there is a high chance that SEGA will distribute this in the end and will release HD versions (or remakes) of 1+2 as well.

I personally believe the PC version is almost guaranteed to be published by SEGA.

I think people overlook how much leverage Yu Suzuki had and probably still has at SEGA, Inafune couldn't even get a retired franchise that appeared from time to time for free from Capcom but Suzuki just walks in and obtains the license.

I'm hoping for this too, if there was ever a chance to capitalise on the Shenmue franchise, it's now. Either we'll see SEGA remastering Shenmue for PC & consoles or it'll be a kickstarter stretch goal for higher pledges.

If nothing else, I hope they port them over to the PC or as a PSN download of some kind.

I've never played the first two even though I backed this. I heard lots of Yakuza comparisons so I jumped in.

At this point I don't care much for the graphics/gameplay etc... I just want to see the end of the story. It feels like Ryo has been stuck inside that cave in Guilin for 14 years. I just want to know what will happen with him and Lan Di, and the mysterious girl who he meets at the end of S2. I also want a game that will bring meaning to the incredible intro of the second game.

From a distant land in the East, from across the sea, he shall appear.
He does not know of the strength hidden within him.
The strength that would destroy him.
The strength that would fulfill his wishes.
When he is ready, he shall seek me out.
And we shall brave together the rocky path.
I shall wait… This encounter has been my destiny since ancient times.
A Dragon shall emerge from the earth, and dark clouds shall obscure the heavens.
A Phoenix shall descend from above, its wings will create a purple wind.
In the midst of the pitch black night a morning star shall glisten, alone...

Most of that paragraph is not touched upon in S2. I realize we all have our own idea of what S3 should be and Suzuki san won't be able to please everyone but mostly I just want closure to the story.

Did companies REALLY think there was not a demand for this? Did this really have to be kickstarted? It is things like this that make me think companies are woefully out of touch.

It's been the biggest load of fucking shit notion for well over a decade now. The original games were tremendously popular. Shenmue 2 never saw release on Ps2, which would have been great for sales obviously. Yes, the budgets were absurd, but nobody ever asked for Shenmue 3 to have cutting edge graphics like they did in the Dreamcast Era.

Shit most fans would be completely fine with entire assets being snatched from the old games and upressed to 1080p. The budget never had to be this 60 million dollar clusterfuck.

Meanwhile we've got about a hundred Yakuza games.

Some people here are just incredible, they got TLG, a FF7 Remake and Shenmue 3 on the same conference and they still find ways to complain.

Yeah, Sony are just so scummy that they gave free publicity to a kickstarter during what seems to be the biggest gaming event in recent years, how dare they?

I can't wait to play it. Thanks to all of you funding it for me!

I also seriously doubt Sony has no backroom funding. If this is true I do expect to see it on the XB1.

IMO the current early stretch goals suck.

A bunch of videos of Shenmue 1 & 2 can easily be made my an ambitious youtuber fan of the games, and the extra languages interest only a small portion of the audience, each!

I hope it gets's on with it, so we can see more serious stretch goals. (like a retail PS4 trilogy box)

Yakuza and Shenmue are not the same.

I like both series but one didn't stop the other, what stopped the other was it had the misfortune of being an Xbox exclusive and by the time SEGA could make a sequel, so much time had passed they were probably more scared about losing money on the project.

(And seriously I'd take 100 Yakuza games over Shenmue 3. That means I've got another 89 games to look forward to :- D)

First Kickstarter that I've backed. Now to replay 1 and 2! I played 1 when I was a kid but I don't really remember much about it.

Blasting through my Shenmue music playlist and wearing my Shenmue shirt proud today. This is all still surreal to me. I'M LEAVING THE CAVE, GUYS!

Kickstarter in a perfect world is great for consumers - we get what we want. And it's great for business - they can judge the true demand for a product before producing it.

Shenmue has without question taken this long because it is a risky venture and Kickstarters very purpose is to eliminate as much risk and possible to try and make the impossible possible. It has only made losses to date. If you weigh up everything I think that the best decision for all parties was Kickstarter. Old games that create frenzied nostalgia such as Shenmue thrive on Kickstarter, the people screaming for Shenmue finally were given the chance to stand up and be counted and have done so willingly.

Sony is not going to do it for all titles going forward: they wouldn't want to give a percentage share to kickstarter to begin with... But so what if they did? They may even create they own crowd funding platform one day. Why does anyone not want business not to be clever with risk? Especially in the games industry where AAA devs are dropping because of risk that ends up in failure. The more successful these people are, the better the games are and consumers win.

Having said that, here are my main problems currently with the Shenmue Kickstarter:
1. I don't want the ideas to be crowd sourced, perfectly happy with the dev making their own vision, sometimes the consumer does not know what they want.
2. The stretch goals are poorly constructed and I hope they fix it very soon, the lost of momentum could cost them and backers millions in value.
3. If you are going to stand on stage at E3 and announce a Kickstarter you really should have a physical copy available for PS4.

Anyway, I'm going to stop moaning now, what a great day to be alive, I spoke to my best friend today and we have been losing our minds over this. So awesome.

Oh my Shenmue brethren! I am so hyped we have proven our worthiness as fans to rally 2 million USD in 9 hours! I'm so glad to be a part of it all! 2017 can't come soon enough. I look forward to all the development milestones and updates. I am so inspired to do something with all this positive energy I'm feeling right now! I need a hug!

So is XBO out of the equation or could be an stretch goal?

Anything's possible for Kickstarters. Somehow I doubt XBO will happen. There has to be a reason why Sony decided to include the unveiling in their press conference. They're either partly funding it or there's some kind of exclusivity deal.

The greatest / weirdest thing about this whole Shenmue thing is that neither of the original games ever appeared on a Sony console.

I'm curious what the publishing arrangement is going to be. It would seem weird for Sony to handle it, because I don't think there would be a PC port if they were doing it.

Anyway I was more shocked than I have ever been at a press conference during that reveal. Good times!

Yeah, not the best I guess but maybe necessary.

If this Shenmue is like the others there will be a literal fuck ton of dialogue. Translating that will be timely and I guess the goals are there to give people who speak those languages incentive to pledge. That's how I see it.

I don't know what it is about Shenmue QTEs, but I really enjoy them despite hating QTEs in other games.

Ryo = fans, thug = Sega:

tumblr_n4r9thq21H1sh3xeyo1_400.gif

Basically Shenmue handled them better than any other game since. Not having them always end in instant fail state goes a long way. Being able to train them in the arcade and reap the fruits of that labor in the rest goes a long way in having them feel a tangible skill for both the player and Ryo instead of just a tacked on play button to continue a cutscene.

I think there is a high chance that SEGA will distribute this in the end and will release HD versions (or remakes) of 1+2 as well.

Considering I've got games like NiGHTS, Jet Grind Radio, Sonic Adventure and Valkyria Chronicles on Steam, it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibilities to bring Mue I and II over quick and dirty straight port style due to the interest demonstrated by the kick starter

Right. I'm back from the gym.

*check kickstarter funding... $2.3 million

Fantastic. Now it got to make $15 million. Spread the word, people. This is our final chance.

Did I say that? I said that Sony could pony up the $2 Million that the Kickstarter is meant to cover.

People who backed the game are getting far more than a $60 boxed game. People with their 10,000 dollar jacket would never be able to get such a thing if not for be huge incentive to support this game via Kickstarter. There was something of value to back this up than just a development.

Speed has slowed down a lot... they need to update the KS page with new stretch goals and new tiers.

No physical ps4 release is horse shit.

Wheres the orginal Ryo voice? This guy sounds like a baffoon.

I think this is pretty exciting, but is the $2m Kickstarter just to start this thing off? Or will they require more money? I can't see this game costing only $2m.

they have other investors(or a publisher) that will fund the game. the kickstarter is to show there's interest and to take some of the risk off the investor

edit: and i just woke up and am like 60 pages behind. any word on a takenobu mitsuyoshi stretch goal?

Shenmue is totally a cult favorite like Firefly or Veronica Mars so doing a Kickstarter to see just how much demand there is makes a lot more sense than someone just outright financing the game.

Imo it's pretty clear that Sony is invested to some degree... A prime E3 stage spot is probably worth tens of thousand of dollars.

The Kickstarter makes sense here but I'm surprised by how quickly it reached the $2 million mark even though I knew it would almost certainly hit that target during the 31 days.

Now I just have to somehow play through the first two again.

I'm like, 70% sure the voices in the video were computer generated. s'just really early, rough stuff to show that the game exists. That said, I really wouldn't be surprised if an English dub is happening at some point along the line with the stretch goals.

I really think $2 million is too low for something of this ambition. Times have changed, there is new tech and new gameplay mechanics to take advantage. I hope the budget increases.

I am so happy about this. I have been in shock today, feeling a bit dizzy at work. After all these years, all the let downs, I honestly had given up hope for a real sequel.

Shenmue has a special meaning to all its fans, I'm sure. It certainly does for me. It was Shenmue II that was the first step for me to fall in love with China. The beautiful scenery from Guilin made me interested in that big country. That's how I decided to visit China, why I started to learn the language and eventually how I met my wife. So without Shenmue I don't think we would ever have met.

Shenmue has had a real impact in my life. I can't wait to finish the story.

It's not the full budget, Sony is funding it beyond the Kickstarter.
No way they can make Shenmue 3 on PS4 with less than 10 million dollars.

I think they put initial goal way too low, they can start from 5m I think.. altho maybe that's the point, and all this just clever media stunt and funding from this not really matter.
