Its not like they didn't know going into this that people would be disappointed.
I think Nintendo is preparing to abandone the WiiU(reality is that the WiiU is a console with an install base of less than 10 mil almost 3 years after launch, and it shows) and the 3DS is also past its prime.

Nintendo needs to focus on the NX.

Well, i think they knew:

1) Iwata not comming
2) Explaining that we can't expect a zelda game @ E3 or NX information
3) Explaining that they will only talk about the games that will be released this year
4) Telling in this event that we will hear more of NX!! next year

It was clear from the start that this event wasn't expected to be "amazing"

Then why did they announce all their Smash stuff early? Why spread what was already paper thin even thinner?

Agreed. Sony and MS have had a terrible first party retail lineup thus far, and it doesn't matter because of the robust third party support. Hell, I don't think I own a single first party game from either of them this generation. That said, they will still crush it this Holiday thanks to the depth and variety of third party experiences available on their platforms.

Nintendo looks on pace for what could very well their worst holiday season in a very, very long time.

Yup, without 3rd party support, Nintendo is in a lot of trouble. They clearly can't support their console entirely on their own. It's a Catch-22 situation for them now. They can't get 3rd parties back without a commanding marketshare/dominant console (e.g., the Wii) and without 3rd parties, they're going to have trouble getting anyone aside from die-hard Nintendo people on board.

Importantly, every single Nintendo console ever has sold less than the previous console with 1 exception, the Wii. Chances are, the NX is going to repeat this trend. It's impossibly difficult to catch lightning in a bottle like they did with the Wii. Nintendo surely isn't doomed because they've got a ton of whales to bleed dry with mobile, Amiibos, etc., but I think they're done as anything more than a bit player in the console market.

I'm more and more curious what the NX is going to turn out to be. Nintendo better pray they don't fuck up if they want to remain even somewhat relevant on consoles.

Ok, this conference sucked ass and I was super disappointed and bummed at the outcome.
But tweeting messages like this is uncalled for. Like someone mentioned, we should all go out for a nice walk. If you're in Chicago, like me, the weather is absolutely gorgeous and should be taken advantage of.

Agreed. Obviously mistakes were made this generation when it comes to the 3DS and WiiU. That said, it's not Iwata can snap his fingers and get third party games onto Nintendo platforms. I think they have done a respectable job of getting quick/inexpensive projects greenlit and to market with surprisingly little reduction in quality.

This digital event, and their holiday lineup still sucks donkey balls though. :(

I don't understand why they had a separate, earlier stream for the Smash DLC when their main conference was this starved for content.

And to think we had this mindset just yesterday:

I feel the opposite.

If they got all this new news out of the way, maybe there will be some rather big announcements for the real thing.

They literally went from "Nintendo revolutionizing E3" (NWC reference) to have one of the weakest presentations in E3 history.

i'm actually happy with this direct. why?

it shows that nintendo is laser focused on the NX. it's obvious at this point that any AAA title or major project that was still in the pipeline for the wii u/3ds was transferred to the NX.

reggie's talk about "transformation" was basically him saying to the fans, "just hold on for a little bit. we know it's rough now, but just wait."

the lack of big wii u and 3ds titles basically confirmed to me that the NX is set for a holiday release next year. nintendo knows where and how they screwed up with the wii u, and they are positioning themselves to not make that mistake again.

i'll keep playing smash, and look forward to star fox (even if it does look rushed and like a gamecube title). but i'm ready for nintendo's next system, and i think they're ready to put the wii u/3ds in the rear view mirror as well.

Is it better to waste a proper system on mid-gen? Because they'll just have to abandon it two years down the road.

I would hardly call Wii U a "proper system". Abandoning it mid-gen is the only thing they can do if they want a fighting chance with NX.

I mean, Nintendo know how vicious Metroid fans can be, they'd be aware how badly poking the bear that would be.

I don't think they understood that people would actually think ill of them because of using the Metroid IP like this.

That conference was embarrassing but the release schedule this year is still amazing :

Shantae And The Pirate's Curse
Majora's Mask 3D
BOXBOY
Affordable Space Adventures
Mario Kart 8 DLC2
Kirby
Fullblox
Splatoon
Yoshi's Woolly World
Super Mario Maker
Starfox Zero
Triforce Heroes

Not bad at all.
Plus Splatoon is my GOTY.

They really should've included a little bit of Fatal Frame and Devil's Third to fill it out, but I wasn't expecting any big boms anyway.

The Metroid 3DS game is a big of a slap in the face. We want Metroid, but this is not what we want. I just feel like they're keeping Retro's game and pushed it onto NX. Which I also respect.

(Tales from my ass, obviously, but I think everyone agrees next E3 will be Zelda U and purely NX after that)
Yup. Frankly, I'm glad to see Nintendo pulling resources from Wii U at this point. Let's have a great NX launch and get Big N back in the game.

Game wise, WiiU is almost as good as the N64 in my book. Waaaay better than the GCN and Wii. It had a good run and I'm still having fun with it. I'm addicted to Splatoon at this point, and I can't wait to get back to Smash and MK8 to play the new content. Wii U is done, but its been a great ride (and I'm still looking forward to Mario Tennis Cpt Toad and XCX).

Mario maker, xenobalde x , star fox, yarn Yoshi and Mario tennis, is a killer linup.

The most fascinating thing here is for me, how after the colossal failure that the Wii U has been, and after this digital event, people here are still looking forward to the NX.

I think, I will never ever buy anything Nintendo again. And I have been a loyal fan up to the Wii.

You people remind me of a beaten housewife coming back for more again and again.

The party is over, people, go home.

The NX won't change that.

All the power to you I suppose, but the output on Wii U has been absolutely stellar in terms of quality. The quantity is what has been lacking compared to their previous consoles, but that mostly has to do with how poorly it has been received by other developers. Nintendo subsequently got caught with their pants down trying to support two devices that weren't really accomodating of such a feat. It was an error. NX does sound like it's representing a turning point in the way Nintendo approaches their hardware business. I stay for the quality, but I predict quantity will be up as well.

'[Iwata] Thank you all for watching so late at night. We're taking the various opinions of this year's Digital Event with sincerity and will be working hard to meet more of everyone's expectations moving forward'.
I love that Nintendo is already doing damage control. They know they didn't meet expectations this year.

So, I woke up late and only just finished watching, but... ummm.... yeah. Here was my breakdown of raw reactions to things as they happened, slightly expanded upon after the fact:

Puppets?! OK, that's something I didn't expect. Though it wasn't quite as good as Robot Chicken skits from the previous years and the humour wasn't as punchy or self-aware, so it fell flat.

Star Fox Zero, huh? Arwing walkers and drone base infiltrating looks cool. It being a prequel seems like a cop out on how to continue the story, like they acknowledge the mess that's been made of it, but whatever. It looks really good, a lot tighter than previous games. I'm reading that the silent development partner this time is Platinum Games, huh? Where was that mentioned? Not in the Digital Event. Seriously? And hearing there's no online multiplayer is just... what? I get that they need something released this year, but the lack of this is just mind boggling.

NX is confirmed to appear next year, OK. Making sure people know what's happening with mobile and stuff, fine.
But amiibo talk again? Nintendo character amiibo in Skylanders?! I don't fucking care and neither do most of the people watching. This is not Digital Event material, this is quiet press release and trailer material. Don't waste my time. But the talk about Nintendo collaborating is neat, I guess? Nothing I couldn't have guessed for myself based on prior information.

I think if they're going to keep doing Digital Events, they should hire a charismatic mouthpiece, because Reggie bores me to tears and Iwata is pulling back, after all, so just get that over with.

Another multiplayer Zelda game? Dammit. I fast-forwarded through it and skipped right past Hyrule Warriors while I was at it. Don't feel like I missed much.

Coop "Metroid Prime" (emphasis on air quotes) on 3DS? Ummm.... this was the answer to a question no one asked. Pass.

Fire Emblem Fates? Meh, sure. Lots of non-gameplay though. This is not a thing I want Nintendo to mimic from other developers and publishers, I already gave shit to Sony and Microsoft for so much of this happening this year at their conferences, I won't tolerate it from Nintendo, either. #FE did the same thing, to an extent. I want to see some gameplay please.

New Xenoblade Chronicles X trailer to announce the Western release. Uhhh, K?
Happy Home Designer trailer? Ummm... Is this going to just be a bunch of trailers for things I already knew about? I don't watch these things to see that.

Animal Crossing Mario Party? Are you being serious right now, Nintendo? I mean, really serious? At least it's a new game, I guess.

More Yoshi again this year for a release date? I like the woman talking about the game and all, but come on, more talk for a trailer and release date is just taking the piss.

Yokai Watch can be a thing in North America, sure, I don't care.

Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi crossover is kinda neat and I'm happy for people who like either of those things, but... *sigh* But, again, at least it's something new.

Mario Tennis on Wii U? I won't complain, but it's not what I'm here for.

Super Mario Maker is cool and all, but I saw a lot of this at NWC and felt that it was sufficient.

And here Reggie is droning on again. OMG, shut up, why are you still talking? And this whole fan video? Just... No. Miyamoto playing guitar was fun but doesn't redeem this mess.

.... what did I just watch? I mean, they had plenty that could be said about games people care about, like Fatal Frame. Why the hell wasn't Fatal Frame in this here? If they're worried about kids, they can tell the kids to cover their damn eyes until it's done or something, it should have been there. Where was Platinum for the Star Fox reveal? So many missed opportunities. If Zelda is going to get benched, it best be for a good reason, and I didn't get that.

This was really phoned in, with almost everything they could call a big gun apparently held back to next year. Which isn't so much a surprise as it is a disappointment.

I still believe in the Digital Event as a format, but all that good will from last year just petered away into nothing. 2008-tier Nintendo conference, hands down. Not because it was embarrassing, but because it didn't sell me on the potential for their platforms and re-inforces what people have believed, that Wii U is essentially spent for Nintendo and they're starting fresh with NX early. Worst showing of E3 so far, which is a shame, considering things were looking like they could be so good a few days ago.

But at least I got a new Star Fox that looks like fun for a change, so I'll take what few positive things from this that I can.

The one glimmer of hope I took from this conference is that Metroid will make it proper to the NX, as it would be ridiculous to create a spinoff nobody asked for if you weren't going to deliver the goods eventually.

What I personally took from this show is Retro are making something for NX launch, the next 3D Mario will be NX launch, Zelda may well be cross-gen, and the NX is coming sooner rather than later.

All in all, to me, for a conference where they didn't talk about NX, they sure said a lot about NX.

(Tales from my ass, obviously, but I think everyone agrees next E3 will be Zelda U and purely NX after that)

In theory that makes complete sense, but we've been here before in terms of equating current system software woes with next system launch lineup strength.

Curse you Treehouse Live - you made Triforce Heroes and Happy Home Designer look great.

I'm preparing for the worst now - that they'll actually sell me on this garbage Metroid game >_>

Am I the only one that thinks Iwata is going to burn Nintendo down to the ground?

He just comes across as very stubborn, very cheap (always opting for outdated hardware and a generation behind the competition) and borderline delusional/in denial about Nintendo's vulnerable position.

There's the saying - you need to spend money to make money. Iwata really seems like a leader who goes completely against that philosophy and wants to spend as little as possible - and yet arrogantly expect grand returns for Nintendo.

Supposedly Nintendo have 10 billion in cash....well start spending it and do something to save the company.

IWATA NEEDS TO GO!!!!

Iwata was the one that made them that 10 billion, broseph.

There's a lot of great stuff on WiiU, all this Digital Event did was completely kill momentum, there is nothing to look forward to past "early 2016" because it is still so nebulous.

Hell, I reckon it would have been smart of them to include some smartphone stuff in this conference, or even some theme park talk. Something to put a little more meat on the bones.

Few surprises and not many games overall, but I found the digital event entertaining enough to watch (several hours late) for the games they did reveal. It had more value in presentation and mood than an overpowering amount of games. Not much in the way of scripted demos and CG trailers, more just getting to the point and showing you what these games really were (compare and contrast to the three big megatons this year: a very boring demo, a trailer promising a distant release, and a literal promise in need of funding). I think it was a lot like last year (where people had similar reaction even) and I imagine Treehouse will be the core of Nintendo's presence at E3. One thing I really dislike though was too much amiibo focus, since I don't care for those things.

I'd give it a B-, without considering the rest of the week.

EDIT: Actually C+, since I gave Microsoft a B- I think and that was better.

Mario Maker looks amazing by any threshold applied to video games. Star Fox... could be good. I'm worried about how often the treehouse guy was ramming straight into obstacles while looking at the gamepad.

Here's my question, do you have to look at the gamepad to aim or just aim with the gamepad? It looks to me like you can aim with the gamepad while looking at the main screen and just glance at the gamepad periodically if need be.

After watching the show....I enjoyed it :). I mean, it wasn't nearly as grand as say, Sony's or Microsoft's shows and despite expecting more from Nintendo than Sony, it got completely inversed, with Sony showing off a lot.

I liked what was shown off though honestly :). The Mario Maker stuff looks really cool and it was cool not only seeing amiibo support for the game but to also have Miyamotto share his design documents from SMB's with everyone. It really paints a picture that the game is not only going to be a lot of fun, but it will inspire people into making games themselves, and that rocks :').

Star Fox Zero is amazing; Platinum games co-developing the tittle, the visuals having a nice clean look, the gameplay looking like classic Star Fox and the transforming features really spice up the gameplay. While the game could look better, I am very happy with what Nintendo showed us and it will be cool seeing more of the tittle this fall.

The amiibo support they had for a few tittles ranged from interesting (the Skylanders versions of Bowser and DK) too annoying (that re-skinned version of Mario Party with Animal Cross characters). Loved the segment with the amiibo Yoshi; the speaker seemed really nice and it is cool seeing how the creation of the amiibo plush birthed from doing a nice thing for the development team. Will get a either a green or blue one for sure :D.

The rest of the announcements were cool honestly :). The Wii U Mario Tennis looks great, the new Mario and Luigi tittle looks awesome (really interested in how Alpha Dream will incorporate TTYD mechanics into the M&L formula), FE 3DS looks great, #FE still looks like a interesting Wii U-exclusive Persona tittle and its great knowing that Xenoblade X is coming this year.

While I am a bit irked with the Metroid announcement (even more so hearing its from Next Level Games, as they WERE working on a very interesting 2.5D Metroid before LM2 :l), I'm willing to give it a shot. They are great developers and the Metroid series is a great fit on the 3DS, so I look forward to seeing more of this.

I think the lack of big Wii U tittles is mainly due to the fact that Nintendo is ready to move on from the platform and is gearing up their studios for the next Nintendo system. And its not like they did this before, the two years of the GC were very sparse with content outside of FE, Chibi Robo, Mario Strikers, Mario Baseball, Mario Party, Battalion Wars, Odama and Twilight Princess being the only notable game released for the system in 2006. Nintendo is handling the transition a lot better here, as big Wii U games are still coming for next year, so I don't mind this year not having 'big' Wii U announcements; we will see them in a future direct I imagine :).

And apparently Iwata got wind of peoples disappointment with the direct, so that might push them into announcing a few big games this E3 week to mediate the negative response.

I really have issues with people calling the Metroid game garbage. It might not be the Metroid game you wanted (and I agree that it's a disappointing use of the IP) but the developer behind it is rock solid. They have been getting better with each game too. Luigi's Mansion 2 knocked it out the park.

You misunderstood. I'm assuming that NX is a proper system. Nintendo will be in the same position with NX as Wii U come 2018-2019.

Define proper system.

Just caught up with the Direct. Like many, I'm very disappointed by them AGAIN only drip feeding games to their Wii U audience. Yes, we know the 3DS is doing far better and that Japan is moving away from consoles, but that doesn't give you the right to keep slapping the people who did buy a Wii U (on day one even) in the face year after year by skipping that platform Nintendo, especially after you helped the Wii U to become a failure in the first place through confusing marketing etc. At least give us loyal buyers who stuck with you one or two new games to look forward to in 2016 apart from Zelda!

Speaking of which, the Zelda games are a good example of how they seem to be distributing their efforts so unevenly. Counting the remakes, that newly announced Four Swords style Zelda game and the port of Hyrule Warriors will be the fourth and fifth(!) Zelda games on 3DS while the Wii U only received one game so far (a remake) while we will have to wait and see if the main Wii U entry will stay on that platform exclusively. Fire Emblem: even worse with two recent games on 3DS and only a (very Japan focused) spinoff game for Wii U. Metroid: sigh...

Some other disappointments in random order:
- Where was Project Guard?
- Where was Project Giant Robot?
- Where was Mother 3 in localized form?
- Where was the tease for a new F-Zero (come on, if Mario Tennis can come back without bringing anything new to the table, why does F-Zero require gameplay innovation when people just want to race in HD and online)?
- Where are DLC packs 3 and 4 for Mario Kart 8?
- Where was any new Splatoon DLC or a more detailed road map at least?
- Where were any other new Splatoon-type, garage projects for Wii U, if teased only?
- Where was Super Mario Sunshine HD or any other Gamecube remaster (especially after building that tech for Wind Waker)?
- Where was the apology for the continued amiibo shortages?
- Where was the new amiibo centered game, like Nintendo Land 2?
- Where was the new console Metroid or 3DS 2.5D game at least?
- Luigi's Mansion 3 for Wii U?
- Kid Icarus Uprising 2 / remaster for Wii U?
- Any new Mario game that is not Mario Maker and not on 3DS, even if just a tease?
- No new Punch-out after all, not even after that pre-E3 teaser with Reggie in his pink trainers?
- No new big Retro game?
- No new big Next Level game?
- No new Mega Man game with Capcom?
- No new Platinum game (after everybody and their dog seems to be getting something from them)?

It seemed Nintendo was ready to start catering more to their most loyal fans after they surprised us with excellent additional content for Smash and MK8 and did things like the ballot etc, and after they released one of their best gamer-focused games in years with Splatoon, but apparently they are not continuing that trend on Wii U at least. I probably can't stay mad at them forever, but right now Nintendo really put a damper on what I'd call an otherwise great E3 2015. Call me unreasonable in my expectations, but we are living in a world where Shenmue, Kingdom Hearts and FF7 can come back and I would think that at least some of the above expectations would not seem that over-the-top in light of that.

All that said, I am still excited for Star Fox, Yoshi and Super Mario Maker - and I'd better be since these three are pretty much the only games we'll be getting for our Wii U's in the near future (bar Xenoblade).

Edit: forgot to add that I did really dig the puppets and the overall tone of the Direct because of them despite my disappointment with the actual announcements.

They aren't doomed but there's always someone to yell Doomed to deflect criticism.

That was simply underwhelming and points to them probably focusing on new hardware.

Underwhelming compared to the other hardware manufacturer's conferences yes but instead of a big yearly info dump there are Directs nearly every other month that keep people in the loop. They kind of spread themselves thin with last months Direct and Sunday's unveiling of the new SSB DLC and Earthbound Beginnings.

But some of the hyperbole and general gnashing of teeth in here is champagne comedy.

That was Nintendo's worst E3 presentation in a long time. Compared to the Smash Direct and the Nintendo World Championship, the Digital Event just fell completely flat.

The lack of even a hint at a true 3D Mario game ala Galaxy left me pretty damn sour to be honest.
Koizumi confirmed that EAD Tokyo's next 3D Mario game was in development back in April 2014, but he wouldn't say what system it was for.

Heres the problem with this logic.

Remember the last 2 years of the Wii? We heard the same thing.

2012 saw Nintendo release in North America:
Kirby port collection (never even hit Europe)
Pikmin 2 port
Xenoblade, 3 year late localization
Mario Party 9
Pokepark
Rhythm Heaven Fever

Thats it

Hell of a lineup right?

All hands on the Wii U deck right?

Oh, and if youre curious, 2011 had
Fortune Street
Mario and Sonic Olympics
Kirby
Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident
Wii Play Motion
Mario Sports Mix
Syward Sword

Hell of a lineup right?

I means thats two entire years where you had two serious games, Skyward Sword and Kirby. On the most successful video game console of all time.

All revving up for the Wii U.

Dont forget the big hit they encountered in development during 2012 and 2013 due to the move to HD and consolidation of the portable/console teams from SD. Who knows how many games were past 50% development for Wii U that got shifted in 2013/2014 once it became obvious there was no saving the Wii U. All of those games, new functionality, new gameplay, new IPs got shifted to NX. They probably were going to have Zelda as the last huge game and then decided to do a Twilight Princess. Many of us already suspected it, the disappointment is in how soon it's happened.

Wait, what? Starfox doesn't have online? Is that correct? Get the FUCK out of here with that if true. Does it even have multiplayer?

Metroid Prime for the 3DS is a massive disappointment. Why not the Wii U, where it can really shine both technically and gameplay-wise? Ugh...

Nintendo deserves absolutely all of the negativity heading their way after how bad their show was. Hopefully they'll finally understand how out of fucking touch they are with their audience.

We finally get an HD nintendo console and they insist on throwing it in the garbage.
