Iwata tweets about the Digital Event reactions.

You know what Nintendo's direct looked like? Like the work of a company that was planning to have Zelda out this year and had to cobble together some shit when that didn't happen.

What are you talking about? That interview with Emi didn't go on for far longer than it provided any actual information. What are you insinuating here? That Nintendo decided to stretch all of the demonstrations by several minutes to accommodate for the lack of showing Zelda Wii U?

Sir, I don't believe it.

After reading those comments I finally put the finger on why that digital event felt so disturbing to me: I felt insulted watching it. They took what I love the most about Nintendo franchises and they made fun of it. They made fun of me.

SE introduced Kingdom hearts with a mobile title, but then moved on to KH3 footage. Sony introduced FF with World of FF, but then moved on to FFVII Remake. Those were scripted emotional events, bringing people's expectations down and then immediately rebounding so much higher.

Nintendo mentioned Star Fox (the lesser offender) and showed the crappiest textures on a WiiU title yet. Then they mentioned Zelda and showed a tiny filler DS title, and stopped there. Then they mentioned Metroid Prime, and showed a tiny filler DS title and stopped there. Then they mentioned WiiU Animal Crossing, and showed a party game with amiibo prereq. And then they mentioned a new WiiU mario game, and showed a tennis filler title.

They never rebounded from those low points. It was just a streak of low points. They took all the franchises people were expecting the most of, and they destroyed every one of them with insignificant filler titles. They didn't promise anything after those. They just showed the lesser version of everything, and then stopped.

I'm a die hard Nintendo fan, but I can't defend that. It feels like a terrible effort at content between 2 cycles. At that point I'm scared they redirected the next Zelda to be a launch title for the next system, along with a proper Metroid.

I agree 100%. Great post.

Sp speculation is that Nintendo will release the NX next year or soon after to compete with PS4 / Xbox 1, but do so right in the prime of both of their console life cycles? Both systems will have tons of games and even better one's on the horizon at that time. Seems crazy.

Anyone complaining about the Developer Diary things needs to link to a post they made in another conference thread where they were screaming to shut up and show games at some stiff-as-a-board developer standing on stage reading from a teleprompter about their title because its pretty much the same thing. Hell, last year's Nintendo Digital Event had developers in a yarn shop waxing poetic about yarn while introducing Wooley World. No one remembers it though because that thing was packed with game announcements that didn't rub a lot of people the wrong way.

They are actually pretty cool. They overdid the one with Yoshi tho

uh... yes. reminds me of the old school FF games.. also warriors of 4 light, theatrythm, final fantasy 9 were all much much better than any of the more "realistic FF games"

It reminds me more of their mobile efforts than NES/SNES Final Fantasy. To each their own, though.

....but seriously are you more excited about a remake of an old game then a brand new FF game with a great artstyle?

I'm of course excited about FFVII remake, especially because it doesn't prevent FFXV from existing. It's icing on the cake. It's bonus. A glorious bonus cake.

But we know we won't see that FFVII remake anytime soon, and still they made the anouncement and they stole the show. That's marketing doing its part in a timely fashion. Nintendo didn't even bother to give us a teaser for glorious things to come. Their biggest anouncement this year was "more info on Zelda and NX next year".

That's one of the pervasive attitudes that I knew would lead to trouble. People hyped themselves up based on nothing and now, when they're let down, it's their own fault. Nintendo even tried to warn us by telling us no new console or mobile content would be shown, no Zelda, and nothing coming out after early 2016

Taking them showing stuff off early to mean that they have too much to show is just silly. I never expected that, especially not from a company like Nintendo, who is comparatively small compared to the likes of Sony or Microsoft.

Taking a picture of Reggie on Twitter from Retro to mean METROID PRIME 4 ON THE WAY is reaching, hard. Nobody should have just assumed that was coming.

Clearly the Nintendo Hype Train is a huge double-edged sword.

For me personally, I wasn't hyped at all. All I wanted was a single major new Wii U game and some announcement for Fatal Frame and Devils Third. That is it. They didn't deliver on any of it.

btw, I'm fully expecting an emergency september direct now which unveils all the like three games that are unknown for the WiiU plus a Zelda trailer. Plus mobile of course. Like all the 2016 plans that aren't NX

Nintendo becoming a 3rd party doesn't seem so bad right now eh?

Yes, it does. The economics of a 3rd party Nintendo means a vastly different company. You're talking about cutting off both arms and legs and making them into little more than a Mario factory on console, with the bulk of their franchises probably ending up going mobile.

The complete lack of support for the Wii U.
The lame spin offs few people want of Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing and Zelda which is like a slap in the face given how much people have been begging for a new Metroid Prime, Wii U Animal Crossing and Zelda.
Lack of new content.
80% of it was non-entertaining filler.
Not one new major Wii U game was shown.
Games that were expected to be shown didn't even get a mention.

I could understand that for Metroid(I don't like Animal Crossing at all so whatever happens to it I don't care) but Zelda? Really? Do you really think Triforce Heroes is what's holding back the next mainline Zelda?

"Games that were expected to be shown didn't even get mention", you mean like games that might not exist? I'm starting to think people in purpose ignores what's said before these events or put their life into rumours only to be disappointed afterwards.

For me personally, I wasn't hyped at all. I wanted was a single major new Wii U game and some announcement for Fatal Frame and Devils Third. That is it. They didn't deliver on any of it.

Fatal Frame and Devil's Third are coming not much to say about them really, probably will be shown at the Treehouse Live Event.

So frustrating. Nintendo needs to either a) release their consoles after the MSFT/Sony ones so they have at least the same horsepower or b) go 3rd party. If they put Mario on PS and Xbox they would mint money, and they would also-- if they went multiplat-- be able to properly support franchises like Metroid without ruining them.

Oh I see, the thread isn't serious.

On one hand, we complain that publishers show us games waaaaaayyyyy too early, on the other hand, we want Nintendo to start announcing games as soon as they begin development. Also, we act like it would make all the difference if they held all the content we already had until this E3 event. As if that would've changed how we enjoy the actual games.

So we're just dealing with whiny children on Christmas morning who got a dog instead of the pony they wanted? Got it. It all makes sense now.

I mean people are definitely exaggerating when they're saying the platform is dead. It's been a good year so far for both of their consoles and the lineup is still good going into the Holidays. It just doesn't have that one holiday smanger anymore.

Nintendo's E3 show was very poor.

The "Animal Crossing Wii U" game turned out nothing more to be a board game using upgraded New Leaf assets, Metroid appeared to be a joke of a game and nothing significant was shown.

As far as I am concerned, today's E3 for Nintendo confirmed the impending end of 3DS and Wii U and a more serious commitment to NX as being their newly driving product.

Which honestly I'm okay with, but the next 12 months or so are going to be barren. Hopefully Mario Maker and those filler games are enough to retain the fans they currently have. It didn't exactly work when they transitioned from Wii to Wii U because of the Wii's game drought, and it looks like they may be repeating the same mistake

So finally im out of the job. I could watch the youtube stream but neogaf is blocked.

So...I guess this is a place like any other to ask but, whats the procedure to sell a Wii U ? With downloaded digital games, how to remove NNID, etc. Serious question.

A console with roughly 3.5 years lifespan, only 1 freaking year being at all interesting. Its the most insulting console purchase i've ever done. Even if its dead, you freaking support it to a reasonable level for those who bought it. I aint even interested in NX after Nintendo pulled this move, i cant support a company that pulls the plug and gives up so fast, no matter how dire the situation, especially when you have 10B warchest doing nothing.

What were all these studio expansions for?

Miyamoto is out of his fucking mind to present Star Fox in this sorry state.

I hope what Iwata understands is that the format was great, loved the puppets and the nintendo charm. It was the content that was disappointing.

I think it's sad he thinks that he has to say that. It was okay, far from something to be ashamed off.

Same here, I'm genuinely surprised by the outrage. My guess is people are sick of only hearing about one or two games a year, which they may or may not even be into.
Also they just came off of conferences showing a deluge of interesting next gen games.

They kind of did this over the last few years with Yoshi, Xenoblade and SMTxFE. I don't think that really worked out for them. I mean, imagine if Yoshi's Woolly World was announced at this E3, that would have improved their reception. Instead they announced it over 2 years ago and it feels like old news at this point. I don't think they would be any better off if they announced games years in advance. The FF7 remake for example is probably not going to come out for at least another 3 years, imo, maybe longer. That's not something to strive to emulate and I would hate it if Nintendo did this more. The first party line-up that Nintendo has for the rest of the year on Wii U is undeniably pretty solid, but as I mentioned announcing stuff like Yoshi way too early just hurt this presentation. I also think that the reception would have been better had Star Fox not been announced last year, just as another example. If they had opened with Star Fox by Platinum Games as a complete surprise it would have made for a great opening.

Well, look at Sony. Who knows when the trio of Shenmue, FF7 and Last Guardian is coming, but by showing them - Sony won E3.

See, the problem is, Nintendo has had poor events before, from the underwhelming (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, this year IMO) to the outright horrible (2003, 2008, 2012), and you would think that Nintendo would KNOW what it takes to have a good one. They've had some conferences that have been universally praised in the past (2004, 2006, 2010, last year) so why can't they just say "Hey, people liked that! Let's do that again next year!"

I know, I know, it's all about games that are ready to show, and with the NX being Nintendo's upcoming focus, Nintendo is limited by what is coming to Wii U, which isn't much (especially if Zelda has been moved). But still, there are ways to dress up a turd to get an audience excited, and considering the mentality of the gaming public, it really isn't all that hard.

Not a fan of the Mario & Luigi series, I take it? Because it's a Mario & Luigi game where Paper Mario is the "extra" character, like the babies in PiT, Bowser in BiS, and Dream Luigi in DT.

The Mario & Luigi series has been pretty stellar since its inception in 2003. Not a single game better than either PM64 or PMTTYD, but there's been nothing like Sticker Star or even Super Paper Mario. Partners In Time and Dream Team both suffer from pacing issues (Which resulted in one game being too short and one game being too long), but the core gameplay in both was still great.

Paper Jam will be yet another great Mario RPG released. Besides, Mario & Luigi has often been noted for being similar to the classic Paper Mario games anyway. This seems like a natural fit, especially when you consider that 3DS already had both a M&L game and a Paper Mario game, so now we're getting one that sort-of mixes the two.

Will likely be the 2016 3DS GOTY.

I love the M&L series (even Partners in Time). Back after Superstar Saga and Thousand Year Door I would have loved this game, but after the recent treatment of Paper Mario it's disappointing.

No.
He said announced.

lol they shoud've just shown Pokken and said "2016". Or Zelda again. Or Retro's thing even if it's far away
Does it matter if it's not coming out soon?

When is KH coming out. FF7? Does it matter. Just show junk.

Exactly, this was a presentation, show what you have, and then show what you don't as well!

Like.. Pokken + Zelda alone would have been hype, even if there is no release date yet.

It didn't exactly work when they transitioned from Wii to Wii U because of the Wii's game drought, and it looks like they may be repeating the same mistake
Yep.
If Nintendo did not drive away third party, they could rely on third party like Sony. Pretty much PS4's 2015 is mostly third party.

I don't completely disagree, but I don't like your dismissal of some of the games as "filler." A little early to be writing them off. I mean, the AC amiibo one can fuck off don't get me wrong.

btw, I'm fully expecting an emergency september direct now which unveils all the like three games that are unknown for the WiiU plus a Zelda trailer. Plus mobile of course. Like all the 2016 plans that aren't NX

Boy have I got news for you.

The direct itself was fine.

It's the lineup of games that Nintendo's been working on that needs help.

Oh I see, the thread isn't serious.

No on both accounts.

Agreed entirely.

Nintendo has a big problem on its hands - it can barely fill its release schedule now, and its just going to keep getting harder the more powerful their systems become. They need to drastically increase output.

Lol at all the people thinking that the output of nintendo game will get better if they go third party. Do they expect that they would suddenly do better when they lose a bunch of revenue due to the loss of their hardware division.

EA and others predicted a 5-6 year cycle on the competition. Even if they release new consoles in 2020 or 2021 like you predict, we still deal with the idea that Nintendo expected its fans to buy two different consoles in one gen. It's not a good look, see Sega 32X and Saturn.

Speaking of third parties, Nintendo will have to put forth a massive and expensive effort to get them back on board, but it's not just about money. They need that huge install base, that Xbox/PS audience, because developers love multiplats.

If Nintendo is going to get any third parties for NX they'd better do it soon, becuase the third parties need to get their NX dev kits and need time to actually make games for the thing. Launching before anybody has time to finish games to support your console is a recipe for failure, see Sega Saturn.

I don't know about dev kits, but I know that third parties at least have target specs for Nintendo's next handheld as of a few months back. And who knows if the home console will be much different. From the way Iwata talks, he wants to target different form factors at different regions. There are a few possibilities there...

I think Nintendo could’ve put on a better show had they not shown so much in advance.

The following is a scenario where Nintendo saved certain things for E3, and tweaked the way they presented other things:

+ Open with Star Fox Zero, but immediately say it’s a collaboration with Platinum Games. And say that the gameplay is the focus right now, targeting 60 fps (according to the IGN article), and the graphics will continue to improve until launch. Split the developer story between Miyamoto and Platinum.

+ Smash logo appears! In this scenario, Smash DLC was NOT shown early. Trailer plays for Roy. Sakurai appears onscreen and quickly explains Roy, and notes Roy and Lucas will be available after the Digital Event. He also quickly notes new stages and Mii Fighter outfits will be available, as well. And I mean quickly: Like all of the Mii Fighter outfits are shown onscreen at once, next to their franchise logos.

- Moving on: Explicit confirmation that The Legend of Zelda is still in the works for WiiU. In the meantime: A look at Triforce Heroes, with immediate confirmation that it has both single-player and online (something they took a while to say). Followed by Hyrule Warriors Legends, which in this scenario, wasn't leaked early by Koei-Tecmo.

- An unexpected bombshell (for English-speaking audiences): Mother 1, fully localized as EarthBound Beginnings, available on the WiiU eShop immediately after the Digital Event.

- Moving on: Metroid Prime: Federation Force, featuring Blast Ball, with the following statement upfront: “We continue to work on ideas for new Metroid games, both 2D and 3D. We hope to have something for you soon. In the meantime, enjoy this new concept inspired by the world of Metroid.”

- An unexpected announcement (for English-speaking audiences): Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, which in this scenario has its localization confirmed at E3, rather than a prior Direct. Follow this up with a new look at Devil’s Third, which in this scenario, wasn't shown a few weeks earlier. And follow this up with Bravely Second End Layer, also saved for E3 in this scenario.

- Show off Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem — in this scenario, for the first time. Yes, that means the earlier Direct would’ve been shorter, and yes, the audience reaction would still be mixed. But anything with “Atlus x Intelligent Systems” in the headline would garner interest. Also remember, for several years this game had borderline mythical status, where people weren’t sure it was still in development. It could’ve been a TLG-like payoff if saved for E3 — much smaller in scale, of course, but still buzz-worthy.

- Show off Fire Emblem Fates and confirm the two versions upfront. Not a plus for everyone but still a point of interest.

- Still on Japanese stuff: Yo-kai Watch coming to the west, Xenoblade Chronicles X this Christmas, etc. Show off Monster Hunter X — not sure if it’s confirmed for the West, but if this had been shown here instead of the earlier Direct, it would’ve made waves.

- Merge the Animal Crossing content into one smaller segment: Happy Home Designer, and on a side note, Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, each with amiibo integration.

- Drastically shorten the Yoshi’s Wooly World segment. Save the developer story for a post-show YouTube release. For the Digital Event, simply have a trailer showing off a huge variety of levels in rapid succession.

- A short segment about Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. A short segment about Mario Tennis Ultra Smash. The time saved here would help slot in the new additions like Fatal Frame and SMT x FE.

- Ditto for Super Mario Maker. They can have a bit of explanation, but save the philosophy by Shiggy and friends for another time. For the Digital Event, simply have a trailer showing off many crazy levels and enemy combinations.

- “One more thing.” This is where they close by showing Ryu in Smash, with a trailer and explanation. Also show off the accompanying stage, and say Ryu is available alongside Roy and Lucas right after the Digital Event. In this scenario, Nintendo actually managed to keep Ryu and Roy a secret.

Had Nintendo played their cards this way, I think the show would’ve gone a great deal better. Still not Sony level with the TLG/FFVII-R/S3 wombo combo, of course, but still buzz-worthy.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

Dream Team was ruined by hand holding and the 2D sections. I no longer have faith in the developer, sad to say.

No Xenoblade English trailer... No Fatal Frame trailer...
No Rhythm Heaven.
... No Mother 3.

I mean, they could've EASILY knocked it out of the park if they rearranged the showcase of games, and put a focus on titles that gamers will respond to. I know translations are costly, but when you know Mother 3 is wanted and you're so desperate.. Why not? Rhythm Heaven should've been there as well. Sigh.

The Metroid really hurts, it shouldn't have been a Metroid IP when fans of the series are not going to settle for this... spin-off... Even if it turns out to be fun to play. And all the Amiibo stuff, come on. They sell well but it's ... just not what we want to see. Nintendo should know that. I even keep forgetting about the Paper Mario thing, which looks amazing truly, but it just gets covered up by the disappointment. Nintendo really missed it, and after the amazing production of the World Championship with Mario Maker that hurts.

The direct itself was fine.

It's the lineup of games that Nintendo's been working on that needs help.
Id say its the opposite actually. Theres a decent line up but that presentation did not generate any excitement. Someone needs to do something about Nintendo's PR. It has an amazing lineup of phenomenal games and its like they are a secret.

The direct itself was fine.

It's the lineup of games that Nintendo's been working on that needs help.

That isn't it.

When you've shown gameplay of a Pokemon fighting game and an open-world Zelda game you can only blame bad decision making for managing to have such a bad Direct.

Jesus christ....it was not that bad guys, just lacking. Watch the next Direct make up for lost time......just wondering why no third parties were shown. Not even more info on project treasure.
