I had a feeling Sony was (or would be) funding at least some part of it when they introduced the kickstarter on stage. Either way I'm just really happy that this is finally happening and we're seeing this come back after 14 years.
well did you not notice how many people backed out when a Wii U version was announced for Bloodstained!?? Nearly as many that withdrew their backing when the Vita version happened. Poor guys, they had so much money even Scrooge McDuck and Flintheart Glamgold together couldn't match it but in the end they, when all had withdrawn their initial backing, due to Wii U and Vita happening, they only had like enough to buy a ticket on an old rickshaw to the nearest dock so they could at least get home on a freighter.

Log in, view the page, click on manage your pledge. Then just choose the new tier you want and click continue. You can even downgrade if you want to. It doesn't add or subtract, it just treats it like whatever tier you pick is the one you always picked.
Damn I just realised that I'm in Canada. Maybe I should help fund it... I just don't like the idea of paying for something I don't even know. Whatever, I'm broke anyways. ¯\_(ツ

If you think that they were trying to hide their involvement then surely they would not openly state it on their own livestream today and during the very first round of press interviews while people still have 31 days to pull their funding if they find this objectionable?

PC sure. Console gamers apparently don't care about Shenmue according to SEGA.
Getting the game is a good thing. It would have been better if Sony put their name on the Kickstarter or took more of a stand in the beginning.
If it was "Shenmue Kickstarter presented by Sony" or something clear like that then I would have no problem. Or is Sony really was not involved at all and saw the huge hype and then stepped in then again I would not have a problem. What I have a problem with is Sony pretending like they had nothing to do with it and just giving Shenmue some E3 screentime, when in reality I am sure this was all worked out before hand and the Kickstarter had to hit some metric before Sony would commit.

Only their opinions matter as to whether it should be canceled or not. Because if you aren't already backing, what difference does it make to you if it's canceled or not?

Sony was (probably) a triggered backer, but you want to blame them for not wanting the brunt of bad PR if the Kickstarter had failed in spectacular fashion?
Here, they get some sort of assurance that the fan interest is not purely nostalgic and can actually provide some $ to offset the risk (and obviously $2m is a rather small assurance here), they step in to make it happen and some are sh*ing on them?

I just don't like Sony's approach and manipulation of the situation. It is pretty clear there was a deal before this (E3 time is not just given away) and they just did not want to look like they had their hand out to their fans.

I will be buying a PS4 because of Shenmue III. I guess I'm not the only one. This move is very well played on Sony's part.
DO you know what you are saying? This isn't even Sony's kickstarter and I can pull my money right now if I felt betrayed.
Seriously the outrage needs to be dialed back A LOT. If you feel this is sleazy. Don't support it and move on.
My assumption is that they knew people would overlook most of these weird shenanigans in the ecstasy of a Kickstarter victory. Nobody who is dying for this game is going to pull their pledge over some relatively mild dishonesty.

They already have HD ports ready for the PS3/360(just never released). Just a matter of touching them up a little bit and put it on current gen.

Yeah, Sony really hid there interest/involvement in this one. I was watching the Sony E3 conference, and could tell they did not want to be involved.
Sony? Sony are not likely to see a single cent from the Kickstarter. Like at all. It's the studio's money, notSony's.
Ok...besides having E3 screentime at the official Sony Conference and clearly stating on the kickstarter that it's a PS4/PC exclusive, what exactly is it that would've changed if it said "Shenmue Kickstarter presented by Sony"? I just don't understand what people think Sony was hiding exactly... Do you think people would've given less money to it? What do you think was the purpose of this "trick" Sony pulled?
They'll probably do it then. Might as well cash in on the hype for Shenmue 3.
If Sony created the Kickstarter they would have taken heat for looking like they were holding the game hostage until fans coughed up the cash. That is why they did not do it.
Bringing out the creator and making him the focus is great PR and marketing on their part but a clear manipulation of the fan base.
Shenmue fans are deservedly excited and I am glad they (hopefully) get the game they were waiting for. It still doesn't excuse the manipulation by Sony.

This goes way, way beyond THIS game, or that it's Sony, or that it involves Kickstarter to me. This is every conversation that involves anything other than "third party publisher funds game for every platform" or "first party develops and funds game for their own console." We could be talking about Bayonetta 2, or Street Fighter V, or No Man's Land, or Sunset Overdrive, or Tomb Raider 2015, or this, or the Bloodstained Kickstarter, or the Double Fine Kickstarter, or... I could go on and on. My issue is that so often conversation becomes so mired in delineating between very similar-seeming situations and citing minor differences to justify what are often not-really-cogent arguments that are mired in arguments that are more emotional than rational and tend to reveal one's own bias more than clear moral guidelines for which types of funding are ok and which aren't.
You are free to disagree with me. I'm not saying that I've got everything figured out. But I personally just find it much easier to accept that if I want to play certain games, I need to accept that partnerships with platform holders are a normal part of doing business. Going forward, accepting that crowdfunding isn't just for small indies is also increasingly becoming a fairly obvious thing I need to accept (in my opinion).
Things just seem easier to me operating in that fashion. As opposed to going "this exclusivity is bad because of these reasons I'm hastily typing up, but this other game's exclusivity is good for these other reasons I'm hastily typing up."

I totally understand that, but I'm honestly not seeing the difference between this kickstarter and having the game available for preorder before it's been developed. I mean I don't think Yu Suzuki or anybody involved with Shenmue is doing anything wrong, but I think the fact that Sony has essentially required them to make a kickstarter before they fund the game is a pretty awful thing to do. I hope other developers won't start doing this as well.

I do. I think it would have come across as Sony holding a game hostage unless fans pre-ordered or donated (Kickstarter term) unless they community gave up specific amount of money.
Instead they turned it into helping the creator create the game his fans are waiting for and that the community could be part of it.
Edit: Just want to be clear I do not harbor any resentment towards the Shenmue team or its fans. My comments are directed at Sony the corporation.

I haven't seen that at all in this thread. I think Sony putting up a KS campaign on their stage was lame. I don't own a Xbone.. I own a PS4.
Honestly, considering that I think a lot of the hyped people here haven't probably played Shenmue.. and more likely never played Shenmue 2... I'm not sure that'd help increase sales for Shenmue 3.
They are pretty dated at this point, honestly... I mean it's been years.. but a few years back when I still had my Dreamcast.. I just couldn't do it again.
I actually kinda liked Crimson Dragon, but I'd have to agree with this.
That said.
They should totally bring back PANZER DRAGOON and do a remaster of the old games.

I'm pretty sure this game is popular enough to justify a sequel. It's just Sega is cheap. If they wanted to test to see if people will pitch in for a sequel, they would have released a HD collection instead which Sega failed to do. Or announced the kickstarter and announce a Shenmue HD collection and be free for people who backed it up at a set price and announced Shenmue 3 being funded by Sony. Getting half off simply isn't going to work when there people who properly paid more than buying the system and game together.

You keep using the word "manipulation," I just do not think that it is this great conspiracy you are making it out to be. We are not even sure Sony is the publisher of this on PS4, they are just backing the project. Hell, Sony doesn't even have the right to put up a Kickstarter on this game. It would be like me starting a Syphon Filter Kickstarter and saying once I have backing, I am sure the original creator will be on board.
We have been alive for the past 14 years (and more), that is why.

Time does weird things. Nobody wanted to fund Shenmue, not even Sega, to the point they let Yu use the IP if he can get funding.....and here we are.
Sony said it was the most requested 3rd party game series for Playstation, and they actually listened!
Shenmue has a special place in my heart, but then then there is the long diehards who never gave up, a piece of ourselves, this is how anyone who loved Shenmue at least one time in their life must have felt before fighting back tears of joy:
