Metroid Prime Federation Force Announced (Next Level, 3DS, 4 Player, Mission Based)

Again context. If the last Mario game we got was Sunshine I'm sure people would be mad at the newest game being Tennis.

I think we can all agree the petition is really stupid.

Again though, I don't think trying to compare this to Mario (or even Zelda for that matter) is really a relevant comparison, as in business terms Mario is far more necessary and relevant to Nintendo than Metroid's ever been. Mario is Nintendo's primary mascot and an iconic and beloved character worldwide, and the initial Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros games formed the foundation of what Nintendo is as a company today. Metroid games have typically had a very positive critical reception...but that's about as far as it gets lately. It's not a massive blockbuster series, Samus as a character isn't malleable enough to be used in the wide variety of gameplay situations as Mario is (and if she were, the fanbase would probably hate it), and that lack of breadth means a lack of interest in the core IP comparatively. And, again, the Mario series and its various spinoffs have multiple development houses working on related games at any given point in time. Metroid, at the absolute height of its popularity, has had two, max, and the games were successful, but not mega-hits.

The definition of what people expect from a "real" Metroid is narrow, and seemingly as far as Nintendo's internal designers are concerned they haven't yet come up with a new gameplay mechanic that fits that setting closely enough to make a new Metroid out of it yet. Federation Force features small strike teams of futuristic troopers, executing missions on hostile alien worlds in a first person setting...there is enough there to tie it in with the Metroid universe, at least it makes more sense to put it there than into any other existing franchise. I suppose you could say give it a new IP, but that expense was already given to STEAM and Splatoon last year and I don't think they want to spring for that too much, too soon. Most of Nintendo's bigger brands contain shifts and derivations and wonky spin-offs. Mario's had 'em, Zelda has 'em, Kirby's had 'em, DK has 'em, Star Fox has 'em, Animal Crossing has them now...should we expect Metroid to be exempt from this sort of brand-promotional behavior?

The problem with this comparison is that Nintendo actually made Zelda and Mario games in the last five years.
They didn't talk about ZeldaU in the digital event either, it must be cancelled.

People want more Metroid Prime but disregard that both MP2 and MP3 were heavily criticised for being too similar to Prime 1. It's a great trilogy but they couldn't keep pumping out those games every 1-2 years. They went in a different direction with Other M, if it didn't suck I'm sure we would have seen Other M 2. Now it sucked, and that led to a break in the Metroid franchise. But it's due to return and probably would have been announced this E3 if not for the WiiU being a dying console. Very likely it was moved to NX and therefore not talked about right now.

How in the world is this shovelware?

Well, we have no idea on how in-depth systems get, but nothing really jumped out as 'this looks super complex' either.

Perhaps unfair, but what was shown in regards to the seemingly simple shoot mechanics and the graphics (not too hot, IMO) don't exactly give it a warm fuzzy feeling even without the debacle of being in the Metroid Prime Umbrella.

I'm getting a Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts like deja vu here. People want the return of a great series, but the drastic change of development where it hardly does or even remotely resembles series at it's core causes a huge backlash.

You can't just slap on a title like "Metroid Prime" on this, it has NOTHING to do with the Prime series at heart other than the fact that it loosely bases the G-Fed trooper designs.

The video just surpassed 20k dislikes. If that doesn't say something to Nintendo, I don't know what will.
"Mr. Iwata, the trailer for that Metroid spinoff has over 20,000 dislikes and there's even a cancellation petition."

"It seems our fans do not like Metroid and want us to allocate resources elsewhere. Cancel it."

"But sir, I'm not sure that's what they wa-"

"Metroid was a mistake..."

"Please sir..."

"It's nothing but trash"

"Sir do we have to resort to memes? It's bad enough when Reggie does this"

"NeoGaf is bashing Federation Force but says that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is severally underrated and one of the best 2D platformers ever. Get Retro on the phone. Tell them to cancel Prime 4 and put them on Donkey Kong Country Returns 3. Sony gave GAF what they wanted and so will we..."

You just explained why the game's direction was horrible.

"Imagine a better Metroid game than Other M."
Missing the point again. You are trying too hard and your hate blinds you.

As a last try to have a civil discussion. For example, taking the Metroid franchise into the first person arena shooter direction like Hunters did or seemingly this new one is doing, is not a move that resonates with the base or the franchise in general.

Other M although with some flaws, took the series into 3D with less sacrifices to character's movement and navigation than Prime did in relation to the classic games. That felt nice. Another similar attempt focusing on the strong points and correcting the shortcomings could have been worthwhile of everyone's time. Specially for the 3DS since dew to hardware limitations Other M style fits the system.

But instead some very vocal individuals chose to downright hate the game instead of making any constructive criticism.

It's not a hive mind, sorry. The hate comes from the fact that is a very very bad game in a franchise where most games are very very good.
Most of the harsher complains and insults to Other M game are related to plot (a very peripheral part of the Metroid games save Fusion) and the perceived "sexism" that permeates the game. Something that applies to the series since the first one.

People that don't fall in the above category tend to concede that there are both good things and bad ones, withouth considering the game just pure filth.

Don't even bother arguing with them, I tried many times. It's so easy to have fun with Other M, even when it's flawed and far from perfect. They completely refuse to do so or even see it. Not your loss.
And this i find intriguing. What fired up people's triggers specifically from this game? The behaviour is almost like a viral marketing that some people parrot endlessly withouth fact checking or much taught put into it.

Soccer with Ice Beasts??

I saw one mission where you trap them in cages, I am sure the game will have many many more.

In fact, they even played other ones.

What we've seen is blast ball and blast ball with monsters. Again, the game looks like shovelware junk and I feel for NLG for having Nintendo commission them to make this nonsense.

Nintendo could have at least put out a 2d Metroid for it's hand helds in the past what 8 years? It's sad to think how much time has past since we have gotten a 2d Metroid, when all the indies are replicating the metroidvania formula in droves..

I actually saw more than that on the Treehouse stream and there will be more tomorrow but I'm absolutely positive nothing in the game will change your mind.

The only reason for this level of backlash is because this isn't the metroid game people want. That understandable sentiment has manifested in a response that's in no way fair to this game or to NLG and their pedigree. Nintendo misread the spin-off potential for the Metroid Prime series in this case. As others have said, had this game just been called Federation Force and nixed the Prime headline altogether, the reaction wouldn't have been nearly as caustic.

The negativity is spitting in the face of NLG. They've made some great stuff, and it's embarrassing how people are lynching them just because they had the audacity to make a metroid spin-off.

Rubbish. Utter twaddle.

The games presented to us were (1) an unremarkable looking 3DS multiplayer shooter (of no interest to many) and (2) an unremarkable looking shooting soccer game (absolutely of no interest to many). The videos were unappealing, regardless of their tenuous Metroid connection or not.

I am allowed that opinion, as are others.

People are understandably displeased that, as mainline Metroid has been dead for a while, they are offered this. But don't go asserting that gamers are being offered gold, and are too blinded by hate to recognise it. The games shown in the videos were completely unremarkable.

If tens of thousands of gamers are unimpressed, it is not their fault. It is the fault of the company that made the lackluster presentation with a visually and conceptually lackluster product.

Hahaha this is likely going to become reality.

Oh, Fusion is still trashed a lot and it's not hard to find someone who'd trash Echoes or Corruption.

But Other M really got beyond the usual cycle with the completely nuts "OMG sexist" hysteria wave. Which is hilarious, since all the evil characters in the game are men, and all the positive/developed characters are women minus only two men, one being Black and the other sacrificing himself to avoid Samus sacrificing herself, because that man thought she was much more powerful and important for the safety of the Federation than he was. It's always funny to see a feminist game being bashed by SJW.

But nah, it's not "universally loathed", it's just that the mob that hates it makes people not post in threads about it. But it's pretty popular in the "unpopular opinion" threads.

And it probably bombed mostly because of brand recognition and a Wii at the end of its life and destroyed by piracy rather than quality.
You're delusional if you think Other M is in any way feminist or pro-women. Then again you just used the "SJW" term so why am I surprised?

It shouldn't be cancelled, but I think it should fail. It's a totally unremarkable game irrespective of the name and it sucks that Nintendo asked NLG to make this.

You barely know anything about it. There's totally a chance it turns out to be an interesting multiplayer experience.

The game is potentially a year away, and they made a point to have "game in development" in the trailer. That tells me there is still a lot of work left. But apparently you are a time-traveller and have played the game already so I guess everyone should just fall in line and wish fiscal failure upon Nintendo and NLG.

Given the fact that NLG has tried in the past to proposition Nintendo to let them work on a Metroid game, I wouldn't be surprised if this was an eventual conclusion of that original project, altered with some different focal points in mind (multiplayer, specifically). With Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon being more mission-based than its predecessor, I wouldn't be surprised if NLG had a thought of doing a mission-styled Metroid bounty hunting game that eventually turned into this.

Either way though, we have no idea how things played out leading up to this point. It's not fair to make the assumption that Nintendo just walked up to them and said "Hey make some shitty game so we can throw the Metroid name on it and power our salt-fueled office generators for years." In fact I feel pretty confident that it absolutely did not play out that way.

Again, last five years.
That's what happened because Other M was a failure. Maybe it's also taken some time for a good concept for a new Metroid game to materialize. 5 years isn't that long in the larger scope of things, they've also done the Trilogy re-release.

This is fiction.
Definitely not.

Just quickly looking at the IGN review for Prime 2:

Echoes isn't exactly a groundbreaking product. The feeling of originality, of freshness, that overwhelmed me as I played through Prime is not present in this sequel, and that's mainly because Prime 2 doesn't stray from the winning formula. It strictly adheres to it, in fact. That's a little disappointing.
The same sentiments were echoed (get it) in most reviews.

But like Toxi said, maybe it was more criticism for that against Prime 2 than 3. Still, it felt like Retro couldn't push that formula much further than they did.

"a little disappointed" totally hammered.

Didn't NLG make Kid Icarus Uprising? Why didn't they just make a sequel to that or make a game around that... I mean a decent chunk of the Kid Icarus characters were playable in sm4sh (and Kid Icarus was all over smash). Give me a Palutena game :(

Project Sora (Sakurai's group) made KI:U with some development help from Nintendo. NLG had nothing to do with it.

No they did Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Kid Icarus Uprising was Sora.

Feel kinda bad for Next Level. Could be a great little game by its own merits, but they picked a hell of a franchise to work with.
