Didn't NLG make Kid Icarus Uprising? Why didn't they just make a sequel to that or make a game around that... I mean a decent chunk of the Kid Icarus characters were playable in sm4sh (and Kid Icarus was all over smash). Give me a Palutena game
It shouldn't be cancelled, but I think it should fail. It's a totally unremarkable game irrespective of the name and it sucks that Nintendo asked NLG to make this.

Is this a troll post or are you geniunely that uninformed
NLG had absolutely nothing to do with uprising. The studio that made it does not exist anymore because it was a special A-team made just for the title.
Ugh, this is the kind of shit that makes me roll my eyes. You say you want Metroid, but when it's not the way YOU want it, you shit all over it. Some people will never be satisfied, I think it looks really fun

I'm kind of surprised by the gigantic amount of hate though I do understand the disappointment. I love the Metroid series but I'm remaining cautiously optimistic on this one.
NLG is a great developer, what they did with Punch-Out and Luigi's Mansion was nothing short of amazing, so I fully trust them to at least make this a fun game. The problem people have is that this looks like a Metroid game without Samus and right now from the videos it looked really rough. I understand that, and with time we'll see more and I hope they work on some things about it.
I feel like the worst part about this is actually putting the metroid prime name on blastball. That's just really out of left field, and makes little sense right now. Given that the Metroid series is such a tense and atmospheric and serious series, having a sports spin off based on it is just odd to say the least.
That aspect of the game aside, I want to know if this will have any significant story to it. Now before somebody shoots me for wanting story after the trash that Other M was, I feel like NLG could take this chance to expand upon the Galactic Federation in a way that hopefully gives them character besides some mustache twirling evil government archetype that they always seem to be. (No I haven't played Primes 2 and 3 so the characters in that are not being considered by me due to that.)
Here's what I'm thinking, if they set this game chronologically after fusion, and also completely retcon Other M, because seriously fuck Other M, then we could have it be that this Federation Force is the one spoilers for fusion
hunting Samus down after she flees at the end of Fusion.
It'd be great to go on these little missions investigating possible places she's been. With the game ending up in that they somehow capture Samus. Think about it, in this game YOU'RE SA-X. It'd be pretty awesome and it could lead up to a follow up game that starts off with Samus making her escape! I can only dream that this is the direction they take with it but yeah.
Also, another reason for it is that I hope this adds some sorely lacking badass characters in the franchise aside from Samus, not only for Smash reasons (Fuck you Sakurai, make Ridley playable already damn it), but also because it'd be nice to have somebody else do cool shit and be a possible rival or something to Samus but one that doesn't have to die exactly.
I don't know I could just be rambling but that's how I look at things.
exactly. they could've made this some original ip that utilized the same exact concept. but attaching the metroid prime name to it, without announcing a true metroid game, was a mistake (nothing but trash maybe)
You know what I meant (didn't say totally hammered either). If there was criticism against 2 and 3, it was largely about the formula staying the same. It made total sense that Nintendo didn't just have Retro continue to pump out sequels every other year. They went another direction and unfortunately Other M was a failure and we've had some years without a new Metroid game. Doesn't mean a 'real' Metroid isn't in the works though. Until they reveal what Retro Studios is working on and it ISN'T Metroit, I'm not worried.
First, it's impossible for you see it any other way if you going to be made emotionally unstable about a disappointing game reveal. I wasn't really asking you personally, because I wouldn't trust someone who makes your kind of posts. But my real point is that even a disappointing E3 reveal doesn't tell you what a game is. We don't even know how extensive this game is as far as co-op games go. The question is will it be possible to judge a game on its own merits beyond the shadow of its branding.
Obviously, for some people, that will be impossible. But nevertheless...
And fans should be mindful of the context of Metroid's sales numbers. It's a franchise that often struggles to break a million. It's simply not going to be a priority with those kinds of numbers. Also, all this hate doesn't go into a vacuum- there are real people that work on these games. It's okay not to like it, or be dissapointed, but all this raging about it (yes, even on here) doesn't help anyone.
What makes you think a huge budget is a requisite for a proper Metroid game?
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of Metroid-inspired games coming out of the indie community made on shoestring budgets, many of them still manage to be good, visually interesting games.
I said it before in the thread, but you replace this game's announcement with a 2D/2.5D remake of an earlier Metroid for eShop, people would have gone absolutely nuts for that. A game in that vein with decent presentation atop a groundwork that's already built and solid would have demanded a budget a tenth of what a 3D online shooter demands, and the response would have been way more positive. If Nintendo wants to go cheap with the series, there's avenues to do that and still make something the fans will still embrace.

Has it occurred to you that people want the gameplay, not the name as much? There would be a lot less complaining about Metroid's absence if there was something that played similarly. It's actually very obvious what people mean when they say we want metroid.

The only reason for this level of backlash is because this isn't the metroid game people want. That understandable sentiment has manifested in a response that's in no way fair to this game or to NLG and their pedigree. Nintendo misread the spin-off potential for the Metroid Prime series in this case. As others have said, had this game just been called Federation Force and nixed the Prime headline altogether, the reaction wouldn't have been nearly as caustic.
The negativity is spitting in the face of NLG. They've made some great stuff, and it's embarrassing how people are lynching them just because they had the audacity to make a metroid spin-off.
But that's your problem: as of now, there isn't a new main Metroid game. If they announced this after Metroid Wii U, people would be saying stuff like "oh cool, we're getting a spin off on the 3DS too!". Other people already made this example, but think Square with World of FF and KH mobile: if those were the only announcements concerning these series, people would be pretty angry at SE. But they announced KH3 and FFVII Remake as well, plus XV is in the making, so these two minor projects became something to look forward to or at least nothing "offensive" towards the fanbase. But the Metroid fanbase is asking for a new Metroid since at least Other M, and they answer to that call with a multiplayer spin off on 3DS without anything major to "back" it. They simply fucked up the timing. And yes, had this game just been called Federation Force or something like that, the reaction would be very different.
When Sonic fans wanted a new Sonic game, but ended up with a werehog, fuck them right? They said they wanted Sonic, but when it's not they way THEY want it, they shat all over Sonic Team.
Also Bomberman fans. They wanted a new Bomberman, and they were given Bomberman Act Zero. Fuck em. They said they wanted Bomberman, but when it's not the way THEY want it, they shat all over Hudsonsoft.
Also Zelda fans. They wanted a new Zelda game, and they were given the Zelda CD-i games. Fuck em. They said they wanted Zelda, but when it's not the way THEY want it, they shat all over the franchise.
How dare those brazen bastards have there own opinions. How dare they.
Let's say Nintendo decides to remove "Metroid Prime" from the title, maybe call it like "Galactic Federation Forces", Since it's the same Federation from F-zero, to further downplay the metroid connection they , On top of the metroid themed missions, add several missions based on F-zero lore, like going after space gangs like the Bloody Chain and Goroh's crew, like a mission where you have to arrest Zoda or go monster Hunting with Beastman, hell even throw a captain falcon cameo in there.
Ugh, this is the kind of shit that makes me roll my eyes. You say you want Metroid, but when it's not the way YOU want it, you shit all over it. Some people will never be satisfied, I think it looks really fun
I think it's pretty obvious why people who wanted Metroid are disappointed and I don't know why people are dancing around it. But good for you that you think it looks fun.
I struggle to understand some of the disappointment surrounding this game. I don't think it's the case that Nintendo decided to make this game in lieu of a more traditional Metroid game - such a game as that will (or won't) be developed on its own merits and Nintendo's larger strategy. If anything the existence of this game should be positive for fans of Metroid, as it shows a interest on Nintendo's part in sustaining the Metroid IP.
I'm "against" this game given the circumstances but i actually feel really sorry for them, they don't deserve this.

The game will forever be branded with negativity too until Nintendo announces a new traditional Metroid game. Reminds me of DmC where they game ended up being decent, but forever was marred in negativity because it replaced the traditional DMC games. So hopefully Nintendo knows what they are doing, otherwise this might impact sales?

Nintendo is a company, and their potential buyers have no obligations to it. if they aren't interested in the product, they aren't interested in the product.

I mean, I like the idea of exploring the post-Phazon lore as a group of Feds... Samus genuinely has no reason to be doing this and, if anything, by the end of Corruptions would never want to see Phazon again for the rest of her life. More over, why would she even be doing this as a bounty hunter/vigilante?
From purely a lore perspective, I welcome the idea of a spin-off with the red shirts as the main characters because they give you a point of view on the universe completely absent from Samus' nigh-godmode perch and lifestyle.
You know that's not how Nintendo rolls. I think the takeaway from this should be that while Nintendo considers Metroid Prime to be a spinoff universe they are still willing to make games set in it and I wouldn't be surprised if the next Metroid game is a Prime game.

Hmm. Well, it still didn't look good (to me, at least). Hyrule Warriors 3DS looks fine, but this Metroid game looked like Fisher Price Metroid, and was terribly off-putting to me.

Sure, but don't come in here telling us to stop complaining since we got our Metroid game. That's the same as saying people should be happy they got their Mario game, when what they wanted was a 3D Mario game and what they got was Mario Tennis
I dunno, when you make it a new IP that takes place and briges the universe of 2 franchises i figure people would be less likely to ask a new one from either franchise, like "oh look! this takes place in the same universe of Metroid AND F-Zero and we gotta see more of the universe and Lore!"
But maybe that's just me, who have wanted a game that crosses over Metroid, F-zero and Star fox in one universe for a long time.

I'm baffled that people think that gamers' response to this is somehow unacceptable.
If Nintendo announced F-Zero: Cooking Adventures, a spinoff in which a group of chefs cooked food in futuristic kitchens while cars raced outside of the kitchen windows, would they not allowed to be vocally displeased? Even if the final product turned out to be a darn good futuristic cooking simulator?

Why would you want to stick an existing franchise on it, if it has nothing to do with either franchises, and odds are that connecting the name of those franchises to it, won't do it any favors because those franchises aren't salesmonsters, because people will expect something that they are not getting and because the small hardcore fanbase, would rather spit out this spin-off as it mocks the fact that they have been waiting for a "true" outing of the franchise for years.
Why downplay it as a "spin-off" of a niche game, instead of letting it be its own thing which may take it way beyond that niche.

For me personally the problem isn't even the idea of the game. I don't have anything against expanding the Metroid universe to focus on different characters. In fact I welcome that and wish they'd do that more. Them expanding the Mario universe is why we can now have Luigi with his own series. Why Toad and Peach can have their own games. Why Wario has multiple series.
My issue is the look of the game. The chibi nature of the characters. Which is fine when it seemed like some new IP called Blastball when it was shown off for the NWC. The second you slap that Metroid Prime logo on it though the standards by which the game is judge by increases exponentially. Especially when this is all they're offering on the Metroid front after knowing exactly what people want and how long they've wanted it. It shows me they don't give a flying f about what this part of the customer base wants or desires. This is on top of the rest of their E3 presentation which makes this worse.
They can change the name and strip the Metroid aspects from the game but the damage is done. We know what this would have been intended to be and their actions towards customers will still have existed.
If this thing did not look the way it did and was not tossed out there the way it was I really doubt people would have had much issue with it. It was put out the way it was though and now we are where we are.
Eh, it's Nintendo's job to make people happy and they've missed the mark with initial impressions. I'm actually pretty amazed at that youtube video. The Mario 3D World trailer that so many people were down on has 11,000 likes to 600 dislikes. The "cancel MDFF" petition thing isn't even necessary with that video on Nintendo's official youtube page.
