Metroid Prime Federation Force Announced (Next Level, 3DS, 4 Player, Mission Based)

Someone on reddit and twitter found a use for that image I uncovered earlier:

Awesomely enough, the the original image is now one of the top links on the front page of Reddit. Maybe its wishful thinking that Nintendo will somehow be made aware.

It doesn't need to sell like shit to not be worthwhile for Nintendo, and I never said it sold like shit. But it was never a strong seller either, and for all we know some of the games may even not have been profitable (Prime 2 on GC, Other M). I guarantee you half the people complaining about the lack of a new Metroid from Retro didn't even buy the trilogy when it released. I say this because we know that limited quantities of it were produced (~600k), and because for a time it was quite easy to find it in bargain bins around the US.
It's almost as though the audience for that title owned the games.

And since when is that considered a huge success? 3D Metroid games, of the Prime type in particular, are surely expensive to make. And Nintendo has plenty of series that cost less to produce and sell a lot more than that.

It didn't have to be a 3D Metroid. It's doubtful you'd find many who wouldn't prefer a 2D Metroid game to... this. And seriously, that can't be expensive to make.

Tell that to the people who bought The Last of Us Remastered, or GoW HD, or HALO Anniversary. The Uncharted collection is also going to sell like hotcakes.. There's no shortage of counter examples.

Zero Mission and Fusion also never set any charts on fire. And for a while following the release of the Prime games, most were clamouring for more of that.

I'm the biggest Nintendo Stan I know IRL, but attaching the Metroid franchise to what likes like a F2P iOS/ eShop title is just sad.

Someone thought this 3DS game was a good idea, do you really think they'll notice that?

All of your counter example are ports of games to systems that aren't backwards compatible lmao.

"Reddit? Read what?"

I'd be interested in knowing what the general Japanese reaction to this is as it seems more catered to them (4 player co-op, 3DS, chibi artstyle) than the West.

Ohh right!
That explains why all those 80 million new Wii users who never owned a GC went out and purchased old copies of Prime 1 and 2 in droves!

The people who are insulted by this game's existence are the irrational ones, lets be clear.

Yeah.
Honestly it looks like a $10 iOS game. Kind of expected more for a full $40 game.

I wonder if they decided to not attach the Metroid name would this be just forgotten?

Nah, 4 player online co-op set in the Metroid Prime universe is what the series needs.
There's more gameplay opportunities around co-op teamwork than going through another 2d metroid sequal, plus it let's Nintendo capitalise on the Metroid Prime brand to introduce a new type of game, Blastball.

I dunno. It looked fun to me, probably because of the Metroid references and gameplay. But I do want a real Metroid game as well.

The audience of 1.5 million people per game is fairly consistent irrespective of console. Unless you think the Wii Fit crowd are into Metroid. Take the L and move on. Since people think that showcasing a discount/F2P mobile game at E3 is embarrassing.

Are you claiming there are anywhere close to 1.5 million people posting about their disappointment with Federation Force online?
I'm saying that there's a disproportionately large number of people that agrees that this looks like dog shit regardless of the name. I'm saying they'd meet better commercial success with a 2D platformer.

Worse. Apparently it's Next-Level games, who were working on a 2.5D Metroid game, but Nintendo themselves decided to cancel that game... in favor of this. or so the story goes.

That is a very skewered version of the information I originally gave out about the pitch. God damn Metroid Wikia.

I'm not going to throw a tantrum over what's clearly an experimental side-installment on a system that's in its twilight years.

That may be true. I'm not saying anybody who doesn't think they'll enjoy this game has to buy it just to support Metroid. But people are reacting as if this game's existence is an insult to them, which is frankly ridiculous and embarrassing. If you really want to send the message to Nintendo that a new 2D Metroid is a good investment, go out and buy all the recent 2D Metroidvanias that have been coming out.

Buy Renegade Kid's Xeodrifter - I've never seen anything closer to old Metroid.

If Nintendo's convinced a legitimate Metroid game would be commercially unsuccessful and therefore financially unfeasible, then why don't they just outsource the IP to a solid Indie developer? Indie games have cornered the 2D-gaming market recently, and I have no doubt in my mind that, with some oversight from Nintendo, one of these developers can deliver a fantastic Metroid game at reasonable cost.

Part of sending a message involves expressing displeasure as their customers to the titles they're dispersed with. That can be dislikes for an embarrassing looking game, letting the game bomb, or buying 2D/Prime games on the eShop. Or all 3.

Why didnt the just port super metroid to the 3ds (with some new textures sprites etc) and everyone would be sooo happy. This is just lazy nintendo!

Seriously people. Watch the treehouse stuff. Game looks ace. Not a traditional METROID but looks genuinely fun.
Knowing Nintendo if this bombs there won't be another Metroid for years again

I was starting to get worried by the low number of drive-bys in this thread. Thank you, dear sir.

well its from next level, they're track record is pretty great, i loved luigi mansion 2 and punch out, so seeing that this will only release in 2016 probably will change for the better....but they should have put this on the wiiu and with a different art style...

Game does look fun, but I feel it needs some seriously retooling. At the very least, they need to approach IP differently, either bring back Samus, make it a new IP, or rework it into an existing IP (Kid Icarus?).

Also, I think making this a 3DS game is a poor decision, it'd probably benefit from being a couch/online co-op game on a home console.

Next Level Games has at least two teams working on games for Nintendo. It's quite possible that in addition to their one bigger game (we have had rumors and speculation that they're working on a Wii U title) they simply have no man power to work on another HD game at the same time.

More online people on 3DS !
Plus they can sell it at a lower price.

And 0 2D entries so FOH.

Sure but until the disaster that was Other M, Metroid was riding a wave of quality titles. From 2002 onwards we got Zero Mission, Fusion, Prime 1, 2, and 3, Hunters and Pinball. Sadly Sakamoto shat the bed with Other M and the franchise was put on ice, but that's no reason to freak out about this game. It's a silly spin-off like that chibi FF game at the Sony conference, this is not the future of Metroid.

Nintendo's biggest mistake this E3 was thinking they could show a cheap Metroid spinoff without at least acknowledging the future of the main series.

I just love it when people make baseless fanboy accusations and then leave. Do tell me, who is defending this and why must they be a blind fanboy if they aren't throwing a tantrum?

Well?

Oh good someone who was there. Do you feel like the Metroid Reveal was taken negatively? Or even close to as negatively as it has been taken on this forum?
Oh sorry I wasn't there. Didn't know that's what you were referring to. But I was like that watching the stream. You should've seen the giant bomb guys react to animal crossing. When they showed it everyone except Dan (a huge Mario party fan) had the most disgusted look on their face.

Yup the game needs work but the hate it's getting is simply because it's the first/only Metroid game in five years.

I think people should be somewhat happy about the fact they are clearly willing to revisit the series, specifically the Prime subseries.

I don't think it has to be that much better looking than it is now. Hell, not being the most impressive game visually would be somewhat of a win for this just, simply because four-player couch multiplayer would be easier to implement. Nintendo needed a shooter, a gap that Splatoon is partially filling, but it's too intensive to have more than a 1v1 local multiplayer. A good couch multiplayer shooter, especially a cartoony-looking one like this one, feels like something of a no-brainer for a Nintendo home console.

But then again, I'm not making it.

I don't think it's gonna sell on 3DS.

This already looks better than Other M.
It could be good or bad.
It needs to be playable offline and the artstyle needs to go, it's beyond horrible.
It's looking worse than Prime Hunters though.
