GamesBeat: When you think about platforms and alliances, is there anything think you’ve done that might be critical, that feels like you just made a big decision? Whether it’s supporting VR or getting behind Windows 10, is there anything that feels like you still have to make some important platform decisions?

Wilson: EA’s legacy is we are a platform agnostic company. We have a commitment to our players, a commitment to making great games for the platforms our players play on. The critical decision we have to make is to build an underlying technology layer, ID, commerce, security, infrastructure, data, plus an engine layer that can get games to whatever platform players play. The critical investment for us, the critical decision we’ve had to make, is to invest heavily in this layer that effectively abstracts us out of any kind of platform ambiguity... Our commitment is to our players. Our commitment is to building great games and getting those games to our players wherever they play.

GamesBeat: That’s true for Origin as well? You don’t have to favor Origin.

Wilson: Wherever our players are, that’s where we want to go. That’s why we’re building for Apple devices. That’s why we’re building for Android devices.

They just want a bigger part of the pie, which is perfectly fine, it's their games and they can set their own rules.

But acting like there isn't an audience for their games on Steam is amusing. I'm personally not going to use Origin, so I don't play EA games at all.

The only reason Origin as a digital platform even exists is, because EA doesn't want to pay Valve 30% of their profits for each of the games they release.

It's like when you don't put your games on a platform, know one plays them there. Woah.
Really old games are not much of an argument. Is this a joke thread?

I would have preferred this answer than the pr speak they gave above.

They have their own ecosystem, they get full profit, about the only reason they did it.

At this point, everyone has to let it go. Origin works.

My biggest beef is that Origin simply doesn't work on my PC, and any attempt to fix it with their customer support leads with them giving up an hanging up on me mid-call. So I simply can't play the PC version of EA games whether I wanted to or not!

They seem happy to pay companies like GreenManGaming and Amazon 30%.

I don't get why Origin gets mocked and people beg for games to come to Steam. They are all just DRM wrappers. Remember when we all wanted PC games to be DRM free? Now people won't buy a game unless it is in a Steam DRM wrapper.

I bought 3 EA games in 2010 before discovering Steam. That's been the only time ever I've paid money on Origin.

I have like 40 games now thanks to that code fuckup a couple of years ago.

I also expect this from every major publisher as the so-called digital future rises high in the sky. Valve might need to either lower the Steam tax or we will see a further fractioning of the PC landscape. I already can't keep my passwords straight between Origin, Uplay, GoG, Rockstar Social Club, Battle.net, the FF14 launcher and so on and even if I could, its getting ridiculous.

Now we have Bethesda.net inbound (no one knows how this will play out) and whatever MS has in mind for Windows 10.

They seem happy to pay companies like GreenManGaming and Amazon 30%.

Also a good point but is it really that high?

Sounds fun, I wanna play.

All the Mario players are on Nintendo platforms
All the Halo players are on Xbox

All these things are on the platform where they are primarily offered!

Oh snap :)

For comparison maybe we could see the Assasin's Creed 2 or Far Cry 2 numbers? Why are we looking at old games? I have a feeling Battlefront is going to do just fine.

I find Origin harmless, it's the less intrusive client out there. That being said, I still would like steam features like the workshop, achievements and all that, and there's also the convenience of steam always running and updating games on the background.

You know EA, I get not wanting to give Valve a share of the profits. Just say it, I don't care. Business is business and Origin is alright these days - it's minorly inconvenient having to have more than one launcher, but it's functional at least for what is needed. But do not, DO NOT say you're doing it for us. It's insulting.

I like Origin better than Steam the more I use it.
The UI is so functional and clean...Steam is just an Excel WS with a list of games, efficient but boring.

It's mainly just convenience/laziness. I forget the items I own on other platforms sometimes, honestly.

What's the problem with putting your own games on your own platform. It's not like if you have Origin, you won't be able to use Steam...

Well having my games all in one place would be great for starters. Now I need to have my steam client open to talk to people online and Origin open to play EA games. And what they said in the interview completely contradicts what they are doing with Origin.

Guaranteed if they moved back they would be selling a hell of a lot more.

We're looking at old games because EA stopped releasing games on Steam years ago so it's not possible to get Steam sales numbers for games released since then. The point is that their games sell exceedingly well on Steam across all games and genres, so the argument about "going where your customers are" is facile.

I'm seeing 1 million-ish for AC2, 1 million-ish for Far Cry 2, 2.5 million-ish for Far Cry 3.

I bet at EA there is an unwriteen rule where no one is allowed to do the math on how much more they could make on Steam minus the 30% vs how much they make on origin. I bet doing that math would be frowned upon.

Good for EA. Hopefully more publishers start ditching Steam. Steam can fuck off with their 30% cut.

Also these current player numbers are pathetic. The Sims 4 is Origin exclusive and its concurrent players would be contantly in top 10 if it were on Steam (i.e. 30k+).

I wish they'd at least put them in the Steam store. Even if I have to launch through Origin like with Ubisoft games, I'd like to have those games in my Steam library too.

Nothing. Nothing whatsoever. EA could stick their games on their own hardware and that'd be totally fine. Business is business and we understand that.

What pisses people off is when you hide straight forward business decisions behind doublespeak. EA don't want to pay Valve 30% on DLC and games. Just say that. Don't spout palpable nonsense about how you're locking your games behind your own platform for the benefit of the people.

EA would be making more money if they had games on Steam and Origin, regardless of the 30% cut.
Edit: And everyone takes money, be it Amazon or GOG

Where are you seeing this.

You really think if it wasn't more profitable for EA to put everything back on Steam they wouldn't?, if it was more profitable EA would be standing outside of Valve HQ begging Gabe to be put back on Steam - you can bet they did the math and it worked out towards Origins favour.

This is EA we are talking about, they aren't going to just pass up profit.

It's not 30% though. Valve's cut is negotiable apparently. They take a 30% cut from all indies, I would imagine, but I really really doubt valve is getting a 30% from call of duty sales.

I feel like if this were true we'd be seeing Ubisoft, Activision etc ditching Steam entirely as well.

Doesnt corporate tip-toeing get boring for these suits?. They should try trolling instead, its much for fun.

"Well according to our figures Dean, EA games saw a sharp decline in sales on the Steam platform around 2011, and have plummeted ever since."

I doubt it. Corporations don't make decisions based on pride. They look at numbers. I have a feeling numbers add up to keeping Origin. EA has enough marketing muscle to get people to their platform.

You do know that EA will still sell their titles on EVERY OTHER DD store and they ALL TAKE 30% of the cut, right? This as stupid as all hell argument will always be. That crappy argument also seems to forget every single time that Steam keys are completely free to generate. You can publish your game on Steam, sell it on your site and get 100% on the sales of your site, while not spending a cent on bandwith usage to make your purchasers download the game.
