Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

So i installed the preview dashboard app on my console yesterday after getting the invite email. Hasn't done anything yet and still says "pending", under the registration tile. is it possible that nothing will happen?

Hundreds of compatible games coming soon? This feature just sealed the deal. As soon as there is a hardware revision that shrinks the monstrous size, I'm in.

Blue dragon and lost odyssey would be great, I'm interested in seeing how multiple discs will work.

They will either have to introduce virtual disc swapping to the emulator (unlikely since the current version seems to run all games off the virtual hard drive)

--or--

Work with the original publishers to repackage a GoD image that is bigger than a single DVD but contains the entire game (more likely as this would also allow them to put the games up as GoDs for the real Xbox 360).

There are additional ways to go, but these are the two most obvious solutions.

You will think they have to do something since a lot of popular games are more than 1 skid.

For anyone that's interested. One of the engineers that worked on the backwards compatibility project was on reddit earlier answering some questions.

edit: I was duped

What is the purpose of this?

Non preview members can follow xbox accounts that have played the backwards compatible games and get access to them by friending/following them. See quote below.

Interested to hear if this works for anyone else that isn't in the preview program (and apologies if it has been reported, haven't seen it anywhere yet).

Note: I've asked for an invite in the preview thread, but haven't yet received a message or app to join the xbox one preview program.

I was able to access the BC 360 games on my Xbox One by doing the following:

1. Find a user who has played a BC 360 game on their XB1 (Major Nelson has Mass Effect in his list for example).
2. Make sure you are following them as a friend.
3. Go to your Friends tab on the xbox one dash and go to the 'Popular with friends' section
4. Find the 360 game and click into it
5. You should then have view in store, install etc options

This has worked for me for Hexic HD, Perfect Dark and Mass Effect (all digitally purchased previously)

Prepare your storage for the live arcade games

Geometry wars on 360 is a 14.8 mb file...because each game needs the 360 emulation layer on xbox one it is 564 mb...soooo

not a big deal on full retail games but kind of funny on very small games...I have six terabytes attached so i'm ready to go but just keep this in mind

seeing 360 games on your xbox one games list, awwesome. I really hope they add OG xbox games too. I already want to rebuy certain 360 games

That's so weird... I would've thought they'd just run them all in the same VM.

Not if they want the XBO to properly identify them all.

XBO just knows it is running the emulator. It doesn't know (or have a way of knowing) what's "in" the emulator.

By packing the emulator with the game, MS can also pack a splash screen and all the other appropriate UI info so that it looks and feels like a One game in your library.

Exactly...not a big negative in order to get this...honestly they could just leave the splash screen up as the xbox 360 boot screen runs...then you wouldn't even remember it is a 360 game

Have they said whether original Xbox games will work?
Nah. I doubt they would go through Xbox 360's BC to do so because it would be emulation within emulation which I think wouldn't work properly.

Would be much less of a headache to just build a OG Xbox wrapper as well but I don't see them doing that unless there is enough support for them to do so, go to uservote and make a post on it :)

Started Banjo Kazooie again for the first time in a few years. Looks great.

I wonder if the rare collection can use this save file though.

Hopefully the next wave of compatible titles hits preview members soon.

I actually bought the digital version of Banjo Nuts and Bolts thinking it would work because it was on the list- but sadly it doesn't work yet.

They said it would be able to pull cloud save files of any game that they have already made available. It was in one of the Xbox Daily things.

I never did finish Black and it would be nice to have Ninja Gaiden Black ready to play at a moments notice.

I can't think of any other original Xbox games that I bought digitally. They could probably run a frame perfect Xbox One emulator now with the 2 generation gap. I still have my discs, I want to play Jet Set Radio Future again without the slow down that was present on 360 emulation.

Definitely a great thing MS did for the fans, while the same might be impossible on PS4(and frankly I don't care for PS3 BC) I really hope this pushes Sony hard to priorities PS1 & PS2 BC including disc support and get it out the door before the end of the year.

I just had a terrifying thought. The Xbox One doesn't allow you to change your language without changing your location. It says I speak "no languages" in the voice command drop down list, incidentally, since I'm in Sweden and Microsoft CANNOT FATHOM that we speak English over here.

Viva Pinata and Banjo Nuts & Bolts both change the in game language based on the system's language.

I- uh.

I don't want to think about this any more.

There's a vote going for it right now. I dunno why this didn't happen with like.. the first update.

Would be great if they did the same thing worth the original Xbox... Emulation was often dodgy on 360, I'd love to play JSRF, deathrow, amped 2 etc again.
