Batman: Arkham Knight - Review Thread

Having the streets deserted, IMO, is a good thing; especially if your in the batmobile. No vehicles to maneuver around (or little) and no crowd of people to get in the way, especially in fights.

How can anyone be mad at a reviewer for giving a game they haven't played yet a 7,, which is still a pretty good score. How.

The vitriol being directed at Kevin VanOrd over this is so embarrassing.

It happens every time and it's always embarrassing. Everyone talks about how metacritc doesn't matter and they don't use reviews to buy games but here we are.

It seems people are perfectly willing to accept criticism (ie batmobile sucks) but then they see that number at the end that isn't the same as the other sites and they just lose their minds. Don't get it.

Are these adults making this video? Jesus, sounds like something that should be made by 14 year olds.

I've watched a lot of his videos over the last couple years and while I might agree with what he says most of the time I honestly don't get how he became as popular as he is on Youtube and despite the name he's not very knowledgeable when it comes to tech.

And yes these things are his attempt at comedy and mocking the whiners about Gamespot's score, many of which probably are 14 year olds or at least share a maturity level.

Only bothersome news to me is the Riddler trophy requirement for an ending. That will be watched on YouTube. I loved Arkham Asylum, found parts of Arkham City to be bolted on and tedious. The game sounds like it is good enough to play over the summer after I finish Bloodborne.

Kevin Van Ord is actually a great reviewer and is basically the best person at GameSpot (along with Danny O'Dwyer). As someone who is looking forward to this game, I'm still pretty hyped for this game. You guys need to chill out and stop insulting him like children.

It sounds like he's doing a shitty Plinkett impression. Christ, this is cringeworthy.

He's very knowledgeable and very good at what it does, but I don't think I've ever seen a review from him that I agree with. Our opinions/tastes in games don't match up obviously, so... Yeah... I'm still getting Arkham Knight.

Are people really freaking out about this?

I would have not given a thought but its a 4th game in series so repetition would be there maybe thats what reviewer was trying to say but anyways I'll still buy it

He wasn't complaining about the general gameplay being repetitive 4 games in. He was saying the Batmobile combat sections were tedious and not fun. He actually liked the general combat. His only complaint was in the final act, both the Batmobile and hand to hand combat sections get thrown in your face over and over and become repetitive in that final stretch.

He also says the story has issues, and the boss encounters in the last half aren't so hot (especially the Batmobile boss fights).

Dude... it's one review. Simple question, did you like the other batman arkham games? If you do then get this game.

Some found Arkham City's script to be poor, and felt it fell apart in the last act. That the boss fights in the second half also weren't that great. That the game became tedious in the last half as well. Arkham City also got glowing reviews across the board.

You are right it's just one review. But this guy is hitting on things that some of us didn't like in City. I will be getting this because despite any flaws it may have, the incredible combat and other great aspects of the game -- still make it worth playing. But I can see why for some, this might be worth holding off till it's half the price (especially if that review ends up being accurate, and this has some of the issues that some had with Arkham City). 7 out of 10 is a good score though, definitely. It has more good than bad.

one review is stopping you from ordering a game?
I don't know about the comments you're replying to, but there are many of us who value certain writer's opinions. I know there are some who value Kevin VanOrd's opinion specifically.

I know that if someone like Schreier or Sterling gave a game a poor review, I'd certainly be a bit more concerned about a game, even if everyone else reviewed the game well.
Yes, you're eligible up until the day of release at 2 a.m. CST.
Sweet, thanks :)

That was almost eight years ago and I'm pretty sure the people responsible for that mess are no longer there while Jeff Gerstmann has been back for a while as editorial director after CBSi bought Giant Bomb.

The incident Golgo 13 is referring to was 8 years ago as well. He's talking about the first(!) Assassins Creed game where Ubi set the review embargo based on the score an outlet would give. That was a long damn time ago and I don't think I've heard of it happening since hten.

The batmobile looks like the Catwoman sections in arkham ciry...

I will buy it with the GOTY edition or a low price. At least for me, the best is still Arkham Assylum

Ignoring reviews for now but for all the negatives about the batmobile. What are the issues besides "forced use" ? Are the controls clunky or in their opinion just didnt find it fun? GTA has horrible driving mechanics and missions but never ruined the game for me. Same thing with Halo tank missions. Found them boring but didn't break the game for me.

Batank sort of gave me burnout vibes which i loved. *shrug*

Postman just dropped this off, just waiting for the patch to update now.

The only control issue I had was that, because it's a car, you'll always have to remind yourself here that left trigger isn't break. The actual handling of the batmobile is fine, the roads are designed in such a way that there aren't turns that catch you off guard. They do a good job of avoiding 90 degree only turns.

Can't wait to purchase this, been waiting a long time since it was announced!

But the self-righteous fanboys need to stop griefing gamespot. The amount of spamming and downvoting on their review on YouTube and their website is shameful; you'd think they've insulted everyone's mothers or something.

Sounds like the batmobile combat. You constantly fight the same drone tanks over and over (one of the reviews claims one section has you taking on 40-50 of them). The game does eventually introduce a new tank unit but those are even worst because you have to use "car stealth" to sneak behind to the rear weak point -- if you are spotted it pretty much one shots you. Also the Fire Fly chases are terrible.

I don't get this part of 'gaming culture'. It's a seven, it's not a failing grade, it's not even a bad grade, it's a perfectly fine grade. Is it lower than expected? Sure, but VanOrd gave a perfectly reasonable explanation why in his opinion it's a seven out of ten. And yet there are people like this who go on a half hour rant about a grade because it doesn't 'fit' the hype or the general consensus.

I generally loathe DSP but I watched a few minutes on this and it seems... nuanced and reasonable?? What a crazy world we live in.

edit: For those who simply assume (as I did) that DSP is being a reactionary jerk about the review, he's not. He basically says "If you read the review it's totally reasonable and a 7 is a fine score, good but not great". Never thought I'd see the day.

Does anyone know if one can put on the Adam West costume right out of the box on PS4 or does one have to find it in the game first?

DSP like to repeat himself or rephrase the same things over and over it seems.

But his Assassins Creed Unity comparison isnt really fair because that was reviewed by a different person.

Never played an Arkham game... Is this the one?

I've got them all but only got round to playing the first so far, LOL! Anyway, I finished it and it was simply the best third-person combat I'd ever played at the time. So if Knight is better then you're in for a treat.
