When can we reasonably expect a PS4 price drop?

It didn't happen at E3 and it's getting to almost 2 years now. I want to jump into the new gen but would really regret the decision if the prices dropped a couple months later. Is it reasonable to expect a drop before the end of the year or is it looking more like a 2016 thing?

Probably when the hardware gets cheap enough.

You guys act like Sony's swimming in dough. I doubt they're eager to lose money on hardware.

Was a bit surprised they didn't announce one at E3. Seemed like the perfect move to really bite down on MS. So yeah, I dunno. Still expect one this year sometime, but if they don't need to, they don't need to.

This is the most reasonable answer.

Anybody that posts it should drop to $300 needs to slap themselves before finishing the sentence.

There's constantly deals and bundles all over the world. I think it's already at a very reasonable price.

Also, it's selling like hotcakes so there's no reason to discount.

Once parts costs go down significantly. They're making a nice profit on each console sold, why would they drop price if the console is still selling real well? Maybe a drop in price at next e3 but bundling games is pretty much the new price drop.

I wonder if sony's sales have gone down a lot. they didn't announce sales figures for a while but they were giving figures like month after month consecutively in the beginning of the year.

Paris Game Week.

500GB, no games, 299$
1TB + 2 first party games 399$

I think this is the mose likely scenario. The lower price gets people on board with a massive drop to clear the 500GB inventory, then move the 1TB version into the $299 slot and remove the games and go from there.

I reckon towards end of year. Sony clearly want to milk the device for all revenue/margin they can but I think the threat (and it's a real threat) of MS overtaking them in US (albeit by a narrow margin) will spur them to finally play the full price drop card. Until then I think they'll rely on deals and bundles (which are plentiful anyway) to drive sales while avoiding announcing a full official price drop.

October I'm thinking, just in time to take effect across most of MS big releases and the holiday period in US/UK.

Of course they may decide they don't care about maintaining an all region lead but I think they'll see the value long term in being ahead everywhere...

They are selling well cumulatively, but have really started to go below monthly sales of last gen consoles now. A price drop, a significant one at that, is needed to reignite momentum. Especially considering Sony has a strong first half next year lined up. So a $299 price and bundles for Black Friday followed by UC4, Ratchet, and possibly Morpheus and more in the first half of 2016 sets up a real good situation for Sony.

Maybe the Batman bundle will change that outlook entirely though. Perhaps the last couple of months were slow because people were waiting on that.

I would imagine if they do drop the price, it will be going into the holidays. That is if they are tracking to have lower sales. That seems the most realistic time to push sales, especially while relying on mostly third party games.

I think they will announce a price drop at TGS & they'll bundle the Nathan Drake Collection with it for October to combat Halo 5 and build up hype for Uncharted 4 at the same time.

See this is why people think you're a troll man. You just make shit up.

Sony have only announced one sell through figure for the whole of 2015 (after 2014 sell through). So no, they weren't giving away loads of figures at the beginning of the year, and even if they were it doesnt mean momentum has slowed down.

Sure there is hardware cost to consider, but what about software sales, which is where the profit really comes from?

You really think that they would not drop the price now, and miss out on so many hardware and software sales, just to save on costs?

Also, they are feeling pressure in US sales right now, so I think it is a good time to drop the price.

PS4 is often $350 with 1 to 2 games I don't think Sony needs to drop the price in my opinion.

Well, that's a great price and it'd make me buy one right away... except that in Europe those bundles going for a 400$ minimum, so at least continental Europe needs a price drop.

Same price strategy used for PS3 in 2009.

I wouldn't be against this if they did it this way. The $400 dollar option has tons of value that would make it remain popular. Clearly the $299 option would be for people who just want to "jump in" to current gen.

I'm wondering as well myself. I really thought Sony was going to drop the price at E3 but absolutely nothing happened. I was very disappointed because the only way I can buy one for my Dad and my Brother is if the price drops. I could do the $400 on myself, but definitely not on others :(

First of all why foes people expect price drop at conference? I have never seen a price drop in the conference. Its usually a PR post from the company.

Anyways I have a good feeling it will happen during the holidays, but then again Playstation 4 is Sonys most profitable business right now and its selling incredibly well. I can see why shareholders would oppose to the price drop idea. But who knows.

they're going to keep increasing hard drive space

they're going to make more and more attractive bundles.

i would gauge next year sometime for an actual price cut

I wasn't making it up, I was saying it from how I remembered it, I just might've been wrong. They announced 18.5 million, then 20.2 million, and then 22.3 million (which might've been shipped). They haven't said anything about sales since then, and I think that was March
