He said he was looking into continuing funding after the Kickstarter ends, and honestly I'm fairly certain they'll do that. Worked out very well for other Kickstarted projects.

The video editing is cheap, but conceptually it's stronger than what's on the Kickstarter right now. I look at it more as a mock-up of what they should have done.
 
They should hire one of the many HUGE fans of Shenmue to manage their kickstarter. I bet someone would be willing to make that front page much better with way more visibility and have better content.

I would at least partially agree with that. Just saying it needs work and some re-thinking of the message too.
 
i think it's because of waiting on more substantial information about new tiers and stretch goals.

though it's very annoying to see the kickstarter roll back from 3,580,000 to 3,579,800ish.

Kickstarters generally try to keep the passion high with meaningful updates and new information that will get press coverage. They best ones also tend to reach out to the community in order to encourage them to be active on social media in order to keep it in the zeitgeist. We constantly talk about what Bloodstained did right, but there is a reason for that, they nailed their campaign with great outreach.

This Kickstarter has more or less gone silent for the last four days or so. I'm hoping there is some kind of shakeup happening behind the scenes.
 
Just for your information, fellow GAF Shenmue fans...

I will be working on a video to release before the final week of the Kickstarter (and onwards for paypal) that will take a historical look at Shenmue, the context of why it was so important, the man behind the creation of new genres, and why I shed a few tears in the San Francisco theater during the PlayStation E3 2015 press conference.

To aid me in this, I'm replaying the games with almost no HUD (at times, anyway) to capture some 1080p widescreen footage of the game. Here is a screen.

Is it possible that the fact this is a direct sequel to two old games is creating a barrier for entry?

Bloodstained has an advantage in that people can jump in without having to worry about playing any other titles, so it's bringing in both old school Castlevania fans and newer generations who maybe aren't familiar with them but want to get in on the hype.

Shenmue 3 may scare some people off who aren't familiar with the previous entries, so perhaps that limits the backer number ceiling.

It was at 3.555.000M earlier this morning. It's now over 3.580.000. A jump of 25k so far today.

It has slowed down compared to the first few days, but this is normal by Kickstarter standards at this point. Nothing out of the ordinary.

We need to keep getting the words out and make sure newcomers know what Shenmue is all about. Explaining to them what the game is all about. Either through trailers, interview videos, let's plays or gameplay streams.
 
I really don't get why Sony it's afraid of this. Yes it was a commercial failure back then, but there's many conditions related to it.

To be honest, with all the promotion Sony could give this game, I can't see how it wouldn't be a success. Would be a 10 (lets say 15 in case Sony gave 5 to Yu in a 10M kickstarter scenario) more risky than The Order? Or Beyond Two Souls? And are those games cheaper than a 10-15M game?
Do they really think Shenmue won't sell at least same as Infamous SS?

Come on Sony...

Also they mess it up by saying they were helping funding the game. Many people were expecting to see the outcome of the first hours/days to invest or not. Soon as they heard sony's words, they thought this was a Bloodstained situation (While it seems it's not)

Yes, I think that is true.

But that aside, I was simply speaking to the day to day quality of the campaign being run. In my mind, the main objective is to reach as many of the million people who bought Shenmue I as possible.

I think if SEGA got their act together and announced Shenmue I and II HD before the end of the Kickstarter that might go a long way towards getting newcomers to want to the jump aboard.

Regarding using the orchestra to predict the future of the story (how awesome is this series, btw? I have never seen a story that has so many layers to it...), the annotations mention ryo learning that he was merely a pawn being used right before finding shenhua. I have played shenmue II tons of times and have no idea what that was supposed to refer to. I know the story went under heavy revision since the orchestra was first conducted, but any theories/ideas?

its absolutely a huge problem
anyone who didnt playu the first 2 games is all but shit out of luck, if they wanna play 1+2. and this is CLEARLY being made as a direct sequel. its not trying to get new fans at all. its straight up "hey hardcore fans, this is what you want!"
and really, there's not THAT many of us. the first two games were played by what, a couple million people? some of those people dont play games anymore. some of those people might not have cared for the first games, or not enough to fund this.
we're a relatively loud minority
i have a feeling the big surge at the end is not going to be as huge as a lot of other games, unless they can convince sega to announce an hd collection


...and add some new god damn tiers.
 
I know this may seem like port-begging, but if the expected final budget will be much more than $10,000,000, and if the kickstarter is currently asking for $10,000,000 (meaning that $10,000,000 is critical to the creation of the game)...

Then doesn't that mean it's still possible the game could come out on other consoles other than PC/PS4? What's stopping the game from coming out on XB1 if the game hasn't even been fully funded yet?

Nothing really. Unless the deal with Sony is preventing them from releasing it on another console.

Shenmue definitely has a lot more working against it. Not only are the sequels long forgotten, it's really the only game of it's kind, so there are no easy comparisons to be made. With Bloodstained you can just say "It's a Metroidvania game" or with MN9 "It's a Mega Man type game."

You can't really define Shenmue in the space of a tweet.

i'd donate more if i could to push it back over. this seems to happen every time we get close to passing a new threshold

No matter what it makes from here on out shouldn't affect Sony's involvement at all. Their involvement was purely based on meeting the 2 million and that's happened, so whatever is made from now on is purely towards development for Ys Net.

That's not exactly true. Yakuza is basically Shenmue repackaged in an easier-to-swallow form. Even if they do have their differences, it's an apt (and common) comparison.
 
I wish they would have more engagement. To be fair, the updates have had some nice videos but I want the actual KS team to start providing more content in general. Bloodstained sent out an update every time a goal was reached. Feels like that's not been the case here.

I also feel like they have not adequately responded to the issue of PS4 physical copies. The comments section is absolutely loaded with demand for this. I don't understand why they don't at least acknowledge it and make a deeper statement than the barebones one in the FAQ.

I'm bumming because this could have kept better momentum had it been better handled. The Bloodstained crew really set the new standard. I hope they get it together soon and start engaging with us more.
 
Anyone else worried we still might never see the conclusion to the series? If 3 bombs then we sure as hell won't be getting 4. I kinda wish Yu tries to end the story with 3.

Personally I don't feel Yakuza is all that close and comparing them is a disservice to Shenmue. At best, Yakuza is "as close as it gets."

Regardless, Yakuza is still a relatively small playerbase and a far cry from the notoriety of Metroid or Mega Man and their respective genres.
 
Yeah, there's no question about the handling of the Kickstarter, it could be better. I'm kind of hoping they just weren't prepared for the goal to be met so soon so they've been working to implement more tiers the last week.

It's kinda funny. I was thinking "Shenmue IV" when I saw that "What are the stock 'dream games' from now on?" thread the other day. A few days after it was announced hehe
