Check the updates section of the kickstarter.

Thanks a lot man. I don't remember how I even knew of the video. I may have seen it on social media. I didn't know there was an updates section on the Kickstarter. I feel like these behind the scenes look deserve much more marketing and attention. I wonder how many people like myself would have missed this.

To be fair, that's the last place I would've looked too.

Yeah, I didn't even know about it until I decided to check it today. I don't really remember it being elsewhere. The Shenmue Twitter went up today as well.

It was requested and I managed to deliver another video, a quite sour one listing many of the faults with this campaign. Most things have probably already been mentioned at some point among these comments. Production is a bit worst and you can hear I'm quite tired making several language mistakes.

Unfortunately I probably need to take a break from video production now. Should be able to update the stats on http://shenmuetalk.wordpress.com/stats at least once per day. In the weekend I hope to produce another, more upbeat, backer news-episode, like the one this morning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZOUTqY3Fh0

Good! Constructive criticism for improvement is needed. I'll watch it now. Hopefully it's solid enough to send to the Shenmue team with a note highlighting that this is what we are all thinking. We've backed but we want your campaign to improve for the better!

EDIT: Finished watching it. This video need to be sent to the SHenmue team together with additional solution notes for campaign improvement. If someone can make that happen that would be fantastic. Good job.

Upped my pledge to the $100 tier. Ready to toss another $30 on July 3rd. Let's keep this train moving!

I will be upping my pledge again by $30 on the third. May go up more than that just to get me to the next meaningful tier, but I would really appreciate the team coming up with more rewards and tiers with interesting, tangible items.

Is it possible to buy multiple copies? I don't see a way (unless you can select the same reward twice somehow)...

But a "gift a friend" tier would be great too.

How exactly are you getting that from the numbers it has already hit?

I would have thought that there were more than 45,000 Shenmue fans out there willing to drop a few dollars on this with how vocal they have been. I don't get it.

So you think kickstarter pledges = fanbase?

The amount of backers has nothing to do with how many fans a particular project has or how many copies a game will sell once released.

Not directly no, but in this case, with how long fans have been begging and being its last hope, I just expected more.

They need more than just new tiers. The entire Kickstarter page needs to be gutted and redone. Or, at the least, we need a new pitch video and the stretch goals moved up top and better explained.

I would agree that:

* A better pitch video

* putting the reward tiers higher on the page

* actually doing regular updates

...would all help immensely.

I've never played Shenmue but always read here on GAF and other places of how good it was back then. Seeing everyone's excitement after the game's announcement was something truly special and there has to be a reason for so many people to get excited about a game. So I've pledged 30$ for the PC digital copy. Its not much but hopefully it helps.

Funding seems to be slowing down.

I hope people don't think "oh sony will just pick up the rest of the slack" or something, because that's not gonna happen.
If Reddit is any indication, that's exactly what happened. A ton of interest thanks to the announcement, polygon runs their hit piece on the campaign, everybody declares mission accomplished and moves onto other things.

IMO the big opportunity will be the final week of the campaign, when the final push gets shenmue back in the mainstream gaming news, the campaign hopefully has its crap together, and people will see that no, Sony doesn't have this covered.

But... Building up some positive momentum in the meantime would be nice. It's been a pretty agonizing watch since day 2.

i might up my pledge depending on the rewards

pledging is already something. You deserve a huber hug

Just freaking add a ps4 physical edition and I'll be more than glad to add 40$ to my pledge, I'm sure that I'm not alone in this situation. They really should consider it.

Something something Sony holding it back for whatever reason something :/

What was yesterday's dollar number of pledges? It seems this KS is slowing down to a crawl. Seems Bloodstained was averaging a higher daily number by this same moment in their KS.

Seeing Shenmue 3's KS helps me realize just how well Bloodstained's was managed. It's night and day.

31k. These past few days have been absolutely brutal.

10 million is a pipe dream. Theres only been 3 kickstarters to ever get that much

Shenmue 3 is the thirteenth highest ever kickstarter.

5 million is likely due to the jump it will get in the last 3-4 days. If its lucky it'll get to maybe 6 million and edge out Bloodstained as the highest funded video game on Kickstarter.

10 million is not possible at this point.

Bloodstained; nice stretch goals, more tiers, and nice physical copies to make people happy.

Someone needs a kick in the ass to get this in gear better for Shenmue, and Bloodstained managed physical PS4 copies and it was supposed to be more modest project comparative to Shenmue, but Shenmue can't because 'reasons'? The hell is wrong with this picture?

I kinda expected it to start high and drop pretty quick afetrwards. I guess the 5M can still be reached but I would be suprised if we hit much more. Maybe it was just too long and 80% of current gamers just don't remember it. Even back then the fanbase was not THAT big.

Yes, there's so much going against this kickstarter and it needs to do better. Better management, more rewards (especially high tier considering how many Shenmue Dojo folks were willing to throw in 10k to chat with Suzuki before the teacher got it), more positive exposure (how has that teacher story NOT been picked up?), encouraging fans to create more by showcasing the things made so far, more clarity that Sony will NOT pick up the rest of the check and... so many things.

80% is being gentle. Don't forget that this is a sequel to not only a series that last saw a game 14 years ago but also a series that was only available on a failed console (as good as the Dreamcast was it was a failure) and on a modestly successful console that sold well only in the U.S. (OG Xbox).

And I can't stress this enough: Shenmue 1 & 2 have never been made available digitally in any way whatsoever.

I'm one of many who are intrigued by S3 but since I can't play S1 or 2 in any way I'm not feeling it. And no, I'm not hunting down a DC or an Xbox with overpriced used discs of the game.

Maybe sony should just fund this to the max - they probably won't make anything, but won't on yakuza 5's western version anyway!

I do also feel we will get to know a lot more about the funding once this kickstarter campaign has ended.

At least we are getting shenmue 3!

10 Million isnt enough to make a console game. They HAVE to be getting a substantial amount of investment from outside sources. Anyone telling you that an extra 5 million will change the design of the final game in any way is kidding themselves. The only this the kickstarter is doing is proving to outside investors that there is an audience for this game.

Anything you have read to the contrary is a mistranslation, misinterpretation, or something similar.

Games are very, very expensive to make (on a console/AAA level)

Google average salary for artists, coders and designers, and then imagine the number required for this kind of game, how long they will be working on it, and do the math.

There is no way this game gets made for less than, say 50 million.
$5m amounts to 25 extra employees for the 2 year production of this game on a $100k a year burn rate. Of course they don't have to spend it on that. It is a significant amount of money. As for how much the game needs and how much it actually costs you have absolutely zero idea, and you don't even know the full scope of the game. To think it would need $50m is absolutely ludicrous if you run the math actually. Shenmue I by the time of its release had 300 people on board, 90 of them being actual developers. On a 3 year cycle let's say, those 90 developers burning $100k a year, would cost $27m but that is way beyond what is to be expected of this game, of course a real budget includes other things and would be higher, the way it is allocated is decided by the team.

Yes I know how much a modern AAA game would cost, this is not a modern AAA game however, it is an indie game and the scope of the game and how much it will cost is dictated by the budget not the other way around. That is why it is pitched as such. Now, will it really cost $10m, probably not, the final figure is not known. But once they know the KS amount and have settled on the scope of the game, and have started work on the project, it is much easier to balloon their budget as necessary and to get external investors to pitch in extra.

Edit: Actual burn rates per employee on this project can vary, admittedly $100k is on the low side of things, though Japanese game developers are relatively low paid, a more realistic number might be closer to $150k maybe higher but we are not privy to enough details to assume anything. The point would be getting this thing off the ground more than anything else, additional funds can be secured after the fact as needed.

It's a heavily story driven game. Most people that want a sequel are the ones who actually played the first two and want to see what happens to Lan Di. At least the OG Xbox version of Shenmue II came with a movie DVD of Shenmue so players could catch up on the story. Anybody else won't know what the hell is going on.

Exactly - my main worry is the fact that the series may not continue past shenmue 3, but i guess they will start another kickstarter campaign for shenmue 4 and get similar funding, unless sony see it as a good investment.

This will be out in 2019, to coincide with the 20th anniversary imo.

Must get the dreamcast out - sold a few dreamcast goodies a while back as i never thought i would play on it ever again!

Seems I'm having problems with my laptop running Photoshop right now. Strange.

My digital paintings will have to hold off for a little (and my Power Rangers artwork). For now, here are some more 16:9 screens:
