The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

damn, i couldn't remember the name of lindsay's site for the life of me. that league of super critics channel led me to there for the first time. comparing it to the three sites i visit semi-regularly (cinemassacre, channel awesome, and phelous), it looks the best by far.
 
It sucks that people don't look at Speed Racer positively when it's easily one of the best anime-to-live action adaptations out there.
 
I should give Speed Racer a second chance some time. I loved the editing, but I disliked the film as a whole, and I hate anime, and the outpouring for the movie since its release just made me roll my eyes at even the stuff I did like. Maybe I'll return to it.

I'll have to revisit it to see if it still holds up, but I remember it was used a TON to show off HD TVs & how bright/crisp the colors looked.

I did remember that was a few things that kind of stuck out in what could've been a decent family film (like the little kid flipping the bird & I think a few swears).

What? No.
First comment was making fun of M. Night Shyamalan. Another director that had one or two hits then a massive string of flops. His last movie was After Earth, a vanity project by Will Smith (a known scientologist). I was making fun the possibility that the Wachowskis won't get any work unless it's some actor's vanity project.

The second, and you really should have watched the review, is the scene where they act out great actors playing overly-hammy villains. Mocking Eddie Redmanye's performance in the movie. This included Jeremy Irons in Dungeons & Dragons, Glenn Close in 101 Dalmations, Michael Sheen in the Twilight Saga, and Frank Langella in Masters of the Universe. I was hoping that they would get Terl in that scene since John Travolta is a great actor that played an overly-hammy villain.
 
I'm currently watching the Jupiter Ascending review.

Honestly, its a bad review. The movie is spectacularly bad, but in ways so profound that he doesn't even come close to addressing. I don't watch bad movies for entertainment (since there's so many good movies that I haven't seen) but this movie is so unfocused, so stupid, so stuck up its own rear end that it's phenomenal. It really should be watched by all to better understand what can go run amok with movies.

But on the other hand, it isn't that much of a travesty on par with truly spectacular failures. Honestly, it's a really interesting failure. It's bad, yes, but not utterly unredeemable.

And, I add this last part with great trepidation since a lot of people on this board go over the top with female performers, but I do wonder if there was some sort of allergic reaction Mila Kunis suffered with this movie because a significant part of this film is shot in her profile with the other side (right side, I think?) in shadows masking some sort of allergic reaction. The makeup on Redmayne and Tatum is also poor. Such an interesting disaster.
 
Why is the Nostalgia Critic reviewing stuff as recent as Jupiter Ascending? Didn't he used to have a cut off for nothing newer than 7 years old or something thereabouts?

He quit the Nostalgia Critic for a while because he was getting tired of the routine. People didn't like his new stuff, so he came back after a few months, but set up some new rules. One of them is that he would no longer have a cutoff date.
 
Ah man Jupiter Ascending has the one sin I always see many dime-a-dzeon sci-fi flicks have.

An interesting alien race that is not the focus but instead is a secondary character to the boring human beings.

What happened to the dragon alien dude?

I am still not gonna watch it since it's a JP sequel and that none of them have been really good so far, and that people are only lenient on this movie because they haven't seen a dinosaur-related film for a long time.

He actually does have a cutoff date though: the movie must've come out on DVD/Bluray.

That's a very broad cutoff but a cutoff nonetheless.

I would think that "copyright violation is copyright violation". It doesn't matter if he bought a ticket to see something in the theater, or bought a DVD, or borrowed a DVD, if he tries to record any footage of it, the MPAA will try to go after him for "stealing".

IIRC, someone once said that when uploading to Youtube, there's a series of hoops you need to jump through and one of them asks what right you have to infringe on somebody else's copyrighted material.
A: I own the DVD - Denied. You have to start over.
B: As a film critic/comedian, I'm claiming the right to Fair Use - Congratulations. You may proceed.

And I know on at least one occasion (not gonna name names), NC has based one of his reviews on watermarked pirate rips when legit DVDs could be attained, for a price.
 
Afaik, generally speaking your right to reproduce has nothing to do with where what you reproduced came from. Fair use is fair use. The person doing the recording for distribution of the whole film is almost certainly running foul of copyright laws, but using that to reproduce for fair use should actually be fine.

IANAL, though.

The only time I can think of it was when he was doing Top 11 Disney Villain Songs & that one song from Princess & The Frog came up, though he DID mention that it wasn't out on DVD/BD yet, hence the water mark that appeared in the corner.

The only one that comes to mind is the Star Wars Holiday Special, since that has no official release.

The only other major case I could think of was when Brad Jones reviewed Grizzly 2, which was an unreleased (and only half-finished) film. Due to its unreleased state, Brad was using a bootleg source. Unfortunately, the creator of Grizzly 2 apparently regularly patrols the video sites and takes down any videos about Grizzly 2, so the review was quickly taken down.
 
I liked the throwback to when
he explained why he started doing his videos on blip &/or why YouTube was taking his reviews down waaaaaayyyyy back when he was just starting out.
 
So after watching the review....is this basically his Sibling Rivalry opinion, but in the style of NC? I don't know, for some reason, I couldn't help but get that vibe, mainly in the way he was expressing his opinions & the structure of the pacing. Like he copy/pasted his opinions & mannerisms from the SR review (which I haven't seen yet) into this review. Maybe it's just the fact that
they don't use actual clips and therefore he does a TON more talking over everyone else acting

Also holy crap, the SR review of Jurassic World is almost 50 minutes long, is that the longest of their SR videos?
 
This review felt like what Doug envisioned Demo Reel to be. Basically, re-enacting the movies in a silly, low-budget way.
Instead, he tried to do a live-action How It Should Have Ended and it really didn't work. Especially when he tried to force an on-going story.
 
I think this review was amazing. He should do more reviews like that. It helps avoid copyright problems, and allows him to flex his own creative interpretations.

I wouldn't mind seeing this style happen again (maybe with another sequel based on a nostalgic franchise, like that new Terminator coming out), though maybe be careful as to how often he does it.

I kind of have to agree with BatDan this feels more in line as to what Demo Reel should've been. Flat-out retelling a movie but in his own, cheaper style, but without the derailing of having that story/plot of the actors lives & whatnot. I remember watching the Wreck-It Ralph one thinking "heh, okay, I wanna see how he does that movie" but it lasted maybe a minute or two before going into this other.....plot....or something....This review is more in line of what I was expecting.

I liked it too. I wouldn't mind more of these in the future.
A shame the reaction doesn't seem to be the same going by the comments... then again the comments on Channel Awesome are usually pretty terrible.
