Warner Brothers suspends [new] purchases for PC version of Batman Arkham Knight

Oh god, haha. Wasn't it 10,000 koins? That unlocked 2 or 3 items in the krypt.
Yup, lol.

Did they ever completely fixed that game? (Framerate issues with x-rays and the storm level)
The only issue I still have is that MK10.exe sometimes keeps running even after exiting to Windows, but that's it. I doubt they'll ever fix that :/ I have to kill it manually when that happens.

I honestly can't imagine another publisher wanting to work with Iron Galaxy Studios after this incident, regardless of how much they are at fault.

My question is, like Sony with USF4, how did they not fucking know beforehand the status of their damn game to ship it in such a garbage state!?

If they needed time to deal with these things, they should have pushed back the release date, there's no retail schedules to consider either therefore no excuse for just pushing the game out like this.

It just speaks to not giving a shit when corporations do this for something they claim to care about.

couple of things:

previously, pre-order revenue was close to a cast iron lock.with every stinker you'd get a few naggy ninnies who'd lumber on down to gamestop and demand a refund or kick up a fuss through official channels, but most would either just trade in a badly made game or have it linger in their collection like a bad smell.

steam refunds changes the dynamic here and warner have to react to it. for pre-order revenue to suddenly become an unknown quantity due to the likelihood of refunds is a terrifying thing for a publisher and they have to act decisively to confront it.

secondly:

i don't want a crack team of surgeons to try and piece this mess back together within the launch window. it's clearly rotten to its core and a mea culpa of this magnitude calls for an equally extreme solution: redo the port in-house (or atleast overseen by them) from the ground up. the only thing that can possibly bring a happy ending is if the lasting narrative is elevated from one of mitigated failure to one of glorious redemption.

Good post. I agree. I doubt that's how this story will unfold, but it would be ideal indeed.

Good, not a fan of AAA developers releasing Early Access Games :^)
Ironically they have one of the more promising EA games out right now.

Warner must have whooped developers ass due to this. And Iron Galaxy is probably DEAD/soon to be dead.

Unprecedented move...especially since 98% of my current playthrough was JUST FINE. Game is extremly far away from any sort of "unplayable state", but they thought that their customers deserve better. So... MAJOR kudos to them.

In the last few years Ubi, Blizz and EA straight up released totally UNPLAYABLE games on PC and almost never bat an eyelid when their communities went apeshit.

WTF WB, first Mortal Kombat X and now this.

I'm mean, it's good that the people at WB are taking some responsibility, but bad that it has has to be like this in the first place.

Not knowing what the timeline is for this re-launch of this puts a lot of us in limbo I think -- trying to decide whether we wait it out and re-buy on PC, or (if you have the option) go PS4. I feel like, one of the things I've been trying to avoid this whole time is 30 FPS gaming, so going to PS4 doesn't really circumvent this mess for me.

Would appreciate a statement from WB/Rocksteady/IronGalaxy on timeline for re-launch as soon as possible. Clearly the issues are systemic, so seeing a patch in a few days time doesn't seem likely. I'm thinking it'll take about as much time as it took Ubi to fix Unity, which iirc was like a month.

Good on them for doing the right thing and pulling it/offering refunds but how did it ever ship in such a bad state? Don't these companies even look at what their putting out?

Yeah, I'm a console gamer but pc gamers are customers and any company should treat them like they need them. If I was the big cheese at WB games I would take this L and try to do something for the people that purchased the game as an acknowledgment that, hey we fucked up but here's what we are doing to make it right.

What they do will say a lot about who they are as a company.

That ain't happening anytime soon. Expect Fall release. Worst case scenario - winter.

As for PC/PS4, if you have a great gaming rig, and are baffled at WB like me, I personally wouldn't give them twice the money. Let them suffer.

Pretty sure MS is still working with them. I'm not convinced one bad port can end your studio. High Voltage has made terrible ports in the past and they are still operating. Even Iron Galaxy made a poor Borderlands 2 vita port and still got contracts after.

My humble guess is that they aren't the only party at fault here.

According to Reddit, this release also had a really short time for Iron Galaxy to port it.

That's false. Whoever started saying that didn't realise they were looking at the time the sub was last modified. It was created last May and has had Arkham Knight in it from the off, with the game's secondary data depots (additional languages) being added about five months ago. IG had plenty of time.

You can still buy the game on resellers like GMG, Direct2Drive, Gamesplanet etc. Not sure why its not being removed from there.

No?

This refund policy is still fairly new, they probably didn't even know it existed and it's the only reason they're acting on it. Otherwise we would get the ol' Ubisoft "We're sorry, we know we fucked up. We'll do better in the future"

In the last few years you couldn't refund the game and bombard the steam page to have the scarlet branding "User reviews: Mostly Negative"

Clearly you've never heard of a team called High Voltage Studios.

The shit they push hasn't stopped them from getting contracted a single time.

Its like 4 in the morning in the UK. GMG is about to wake up to a plethora of refund requests now that WB has pulled the game and a patch ETA is up in the air. It'll be interesting to see if they start refunding immediately or if they still want us to wait for the patch.

Thanks, I'll edit that part out of my post.

Edit: I took it out, cleaned it up. I should know better than to include info I read in passing, and which was old. I didn't read the update to that, so I wasn't aware it was proven false. I really appreciate you letting me know that. I'll make sure not to do that again. I still think it's baffling WB would use this studio to port their biggest release though.

Just seems insane they would use them for their biggest release, and also not be aware of the state it was in until after it was released. The poster I was replying to was asking what happened, but I'm not sure we will know what happened except they used a poor studio to port it. It's all blind speculation as to why they made these decisions, and what they actually knew when the game was released.

Yeah but this is a historic scenario. I haven't seen any AAA publisher pulling their game off from the store, and pretty much every media outlet reporting about the performance.

Someone's thought of these already, I assume, but:

1) Holy recall, Batman!
2) Batmobile gets repo'd
3) The Dark Knight Refunds

Everyone's talking about how steam refunds are great (and it's true- they,re the only reason WB is doing this)

I also see posts saying that '' maybe now other developers won,t release shitty PC ports''.

Couldn't they just not release their game on steam instead? No refunds problems in that case..

Sure, if they want to miss out on a ton of potential revenue. The opportunity cost is absolutely worth it. Just don't do a terrible job.

Their rep from gamers on forums who have no idea what went on behind the scenes?

Didn't you see quotes from Rocksteady? In the first post itself they mentioned our partner Iron Galaxy is working on it. Even Rocksteady doesn't want to take any blame on it.

Whoa.

I wonder how long it will take them to fix the issue though.

I think it'll be awhile. Suspending sales is a strong indicator that Arkham Knight's PC codebase is deeply fucked up, with numerous significant defects that aren't trivial to resolve. That's not something that can be fixed in a week or two. I'm guessing the game won't be re-released until August or even September/October.

OK, so now what are people who preordered the PC version supposed to do if they want to refund and switch to the PS4 version. Are they not going to have a chance to get the Harley and Scarecrow missions now because it's already released? Any news on that?

Warner must have whooped developers ass due to this. And Iron Galaxy is probably DEAD/soon to be dead.

Maybe eventually as is not getting future port work, but you really think MS will take Killer Instinct away from them? Maybe the PC port, but if they do a Season 3 and considering Season 2 was pretty well received, I kind of doubt they'll go "well you guys really messed up that Batman port, no more Killer Instinct for you!".
