Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

in what way?

In that collector's editions have been bad value propositions from the beginning of time (general). It makes a lot more sense to compare them to each other for this reason.

This collector's edition is overpriced compared to their previous offerings. This is not good and a legitimate complaint.

It's just being obscured by people drawing the incorrect comparison to their previous expansion offerings. This makes no sense.

After reading Octogonal's completely logical breakdown, I agree this pricing structure is fucked and should be fixed. Some people are just drawing the wrong comparisons.

Yet another "moving the goalposts" rant snipped

If you bothered to read through the thread you would see that the idea that this is all about moving the goalposts has been responded to dozens of times now. Did you think you were such a special snowflake that in over 1,000 posts no one had thought to bring that point up?

I don't even own this game and yet found it interesting enough to read through the thread enough to find all the major points/counter-points.

It gets so tiring seeing people join threads in progress and making the same points ad nauseum.

Every thread should have a dude that gives a recap that's added to the OP :).

This would be like if Diablo 3 + RoS had 4 SKUs
RoS upgrade for previous D3 owners = $40
Diablo 3 + RoS = $60
Diablo 3 + RoS Digital CE with the wings/charm (that give XP) and special dye = $80
Diablo 3 + RoS Physical CE with real black soulstone and the wings/charm (that give XP) and special dye = $80

Now they've added the option to buy the XP Wings/charm and dye for $20.
People would be pissed there too and rightfully so. Sure at least we're not rebuying content, but the implicit value of the CE stuff is what Bungie is charging for the base Destiny.

We'll see how it all shakes out. I'm not rage quitting because of this. The raids are fun, teaming with folks here and elsewhere has been a blast.

When TTK comes out and if it looks like it's worth the cost I'll jump in. I hope others do too. I also hope Bungie doesn't get a pass on this. That's not even getting into the international cost. 40 quid != $40 != 40 Euros unless you're a large publisher.

i dont see how this is any better. youre still paying another $60 for the expansion and this other crap. Fuck destiny. i had no plans to purchase either, so i dont want to come off sounding entitled. but again. fuck destiny. and bungie.

The price for a digital CE upgrade is totally in line with other games when you look at something like...Diablo 3 ROS expansion, which had a $20 digital upgrade that came with:

So you get some cosmetic shit and some character slots. CEs have always been expensive, Destiny isn't the first and it certainly won't be the last.

Thank you. This is all I've been trying to say. Digital collector's editions have always been a terrible deal, (most recent CoD was my example) and should be compared to each other, not to expansion packs the developer actually intends for the majority of their player base to purchase.

This digital collector's edition is overpriced when compared to Destiny's previous digital collector's editions, which is a problem. It is not an issue that it is overpriced compared to their previous DLC.

The funny thing is that they might have been able to get away with it if they charged 100 bucks for the physical CE. lol

Still a big 'fuck you' to all us gamers from Bungie/Activision, especially those of us in the UK.

I'm not paying £40 for an expansion that is likely to be smaller than either of the two DLCs which were £20 a pop. I assume these were only $20 in the US.

As a UK player, the currency conversion rate for the new digital expansion content is a disgrace, $40 is £25, or the other way, £40 is $62.

The latest insult of $20=£20 for some shitty shaders and emotes is terrible. At least they add nothing to the gameplay, so it definitely makes it easier for me repay their gesture, and say fuck you back I'm not paying that.

I would rather pay $20 for extra vault space. No fucking way am I paying 20 bux for class items and emots, I can buy complete games for $20. TF Bungie?

yeah this is not good news, 20 bucks for shit like Emotes and skins? really?

are we 100% sure that those 20 bucks only have the skins and emotes?

I would guess the Taken King dlc + ingame skins weapons etc from the collectors edition will be uncluded no?

$20 buys a LOT of full games off of GoG and Steam.

Bungie has lost their minds on this whole thing.

I literally can't believe their idea of an apology is "you're allowed to pay us a lot of money, but we're just not ripping you off as badly as before".

Well, I was taking a break from destiny after House of Wolves only entertained me for a week. Looks like I might be taking an even longer break.

I think that offering the content up by itself is a good idea, and should've been in the plans from the start. But I also think Bungie needs to rethink how to deal with the hardcore. Investing in a game like Destiny is a time commitment. From vanilla to House of Wolves, this was my go to game. I took a small break for Bloodborne, but Destiny was the game.

Before House of Wolves, I had all the exotic gear and weapons. I was ready to earn more. Unfortunately, the bulk of House of Wolves was remixing older content. I wanted one new exotic, and the new legendary gear/weapons pale in comparison to the things I could upgrade to the new attack cap.

If there were titles that you could only get during the time frame of the dlc, or really anything thats time locked or rewards investment, I would be interested.

But 2 DLCs in and the value proposition has fallen for me. I hope there's a "year 2" package down the line that includes everything, and maybe I'll get that. But I'll be passing on TTK.

Thread title should be updated. Only the digital CE items are sold separately.

Still no way to get the strange coin replica without rebuying the entire game :/

So I've read the entire Bungie update and it still reads like a "fuck you" to loyal fans. Their idea of fixing things is to charge $20? Seriously?

Done.

I am not going to talk shit about Bungie. They said sorry and are working on it. I will see what the $20 will get me and decide when it is for sale.

Bitching about their attempt to fix is too much for me, like kicking someone when they're down. Now is the time to wait and see.

This is a 23 page thread of people complaining about 20 dollar *completely optional* vanity dlc that was made available after people asked for it - it's not even cool vanity dlc, either. The sane thing would be to just not buy it, to just move on with our lives.

Either way, there's no "getting away with it" since something about complaining and Destiny threads are intrinsically linked.

Well, in terms of creating perceived value, if the physical was 100 and the digital was 80, then people would think they are "saving" potentially 40 dollars by being able to buy the CE contents separately.

It's all about tricking people into thinking they are saving money when they're not. It's why Walmart ends all their prices with .88 anyway. It's cheaper than .99! (which is cheaper than .00!)

I uninstalled Destiny yesterday and haven't played since vanilla, no regrets. This is not the Bungie I grew up with and I am ridiculously upset they have fallen this far.

I pre ordered taken king on PSN and I have no intention of buying the $20 pack.

I have also played destiny this morning and had a lot of fun. I do not believe I will be uninstalling this.

Am I reading this right? Did I just read that their fix is charging people $20 for the emotes and an emblem they wanted?

WOW!

I'm speechless. But I think this goes without saying: "Fuck that shit."

EDIT: Additionally, fuck Destiny. I've been out of it since the first expansion released and can tell you I am all the happier for it. This is the only game I've ever had this vitriolic a response to. Normally if I dislike a game, okay, it's not for me and I'll play something else. But this game I fucking hate and I wish it would burn to the ground. I should try to figure out why that is.

I guess for me, it's something that is imaginary and is worth as much as you can convince someone to buy it. For all the people who think 20 is too much, I expect to see lots of people using the shaders or at least the class items if I'm still playing the game in September.

I know what it is. It's because Halo: CE is my favorite game and Halo my favorite series of all-time, Bungie (years ago) my favorite developer of all time. The product we got, however, feels like an Activision product, especially with all these bullshit price gouges going on. Much like Halo 2 where they fucked up the development and had to start from scrap, I think the initial scope of the project was scrapped at some point and we were left with this abortion of an MMO/combat game. Instead of realizing their mistake and working or negotiating a way to fix it, we keep getting these milestone goals that were set years ago (in the form of "expansions" if you can even call them that) and we, the consumers, are basically left floating the bill for Bungie's arrogance.

Not to mention the exodus of Marty O'Donnell, Joe Staten, Jaime Grieshemer, and the like.

This solution is this gen's Horse Armor.

I couldn't care less, personally. I'll probably buy the Taken King, because with each DLC, Bungie seems to be improving. I loved the House of Wolves and if I can get that, but MORE of that... $40 is fine. I will never buy a shader/emote package at $20 though. But I'm sure some people will need to have their special horse armor. At least they gave those of you excited for this the option to throw money at it without buying things you already own.

I am pleased with Luke's apology too. I do remember him from his Halo days (and that awful drawing), so it's good to see him own up to his remarks like that. Things can get taken out of context or with a different inflection when read on an internet gossip site as opposed to hearing it from his lips yourself.

Whatever. They are not forcing me to buy it.

hah my friend just commented on this controversy "huh, im more surprised why people are still playing this game..its boring and repetitive"

Your friend gets it.

Still one of the most highly viewed games on Twitch. So it's so incredibly boring and repetitive that people not only can't stop playing it, but they also can't stop watching other people play it. The problem with Destiny isn't the gameplay.

$20 for emotes, 3 class items, and some shaders? I'm sorry Bungie but you took a problem and made it worse. I bought the digital Guardian edition so I could not see anyone in my position wanting to pay more than $5 for what is cosmetic to the Destiny universe. For $20 I better be getting a whole lot more than a few cosmetic items.

Having just started Destiny, I'm glad I don't give a crap about emotes and stuff. I'm here to shoot things not throw a dance party.

Or expansions for that matter. Although I'll run out of story missions eventually...

Its all a matter of opinion. I think it's some of the most fun I've had with games

Your friend gets it.
Nope plus I think destiny is up there with the best halo games.

I don't think there's anything wrong with how they are handling it.

It's something most people won't buy and they didn't want to in the first place others really do want it and its worth it for them.

I like the fact they are releasing it separately for who wants it.

This sealed the deal. I will be shelving destiny for good and will focus all my downtime on Witcher 3 instead.

edit: Take that, Bungie! I know you'll lose sleep over my 60 dollars.

Just enjoy the game for now. It's great.

The Physical collectors is priced at 79.99
The Digital Collectors is now 59.99

Bungie is giving us the items we wanted without having to repurchase old content. I understand people dont like the price, but this is the price i would have expected for the digital collectors if it existed initially. If you have been riding the Destiny train you should know there is pretty much a 10 dollar premium attached to everything so far. TDB and HOW should have been 9.99 each and Taken King should be 29.99, but hey i like the game and i feel its gameplay and non disruptive online service has been well deserving of the extra cash i have had to spend. So far i have spent 89.99 for destiny and both expansions and now an additional 39.99 will make it around 130.....maybe 150 if i buy the extra content. The amount i have played this game i have gotten my moneys worth so far.

I'd love to here how Patrol is going for you now that most areas have lvl 28 mobs spawn in. They're fun for me and my mates as normal world events are a joke at 30+ but do they mess up patrol for folks at <lvl 28?

Its still a vastly better experience than halo 2. The story has tons of issues and needs to be told better but the lore is right up there with halo.
The lore is great but it may as well be in novels for all it's relevance to the game, Halo 2 is a mess but all the story was there until it stopped. How Bungie have still no way for you to view the Grimoire in game boggles my mind. I mean surely they could have hired a few mobbing actors to read them as audio logs at least?
