Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

LMAO at those defending this shit. Seriously.

This is such a slap on the face. What happened to you Bungie?

gif02.gif

Anyway, I'm out. So much potential in this game went down the toilet and the DLC's confirmed Bungie's inability to sort out the glaring problems that faced the standalone game let alone trying to properly improve on the game forward.

Yes. Of course. Bungie can somehow get a digital upgrade to happen but can't influence the price at all.

A digital CE upgrade for $20 is something that can be argued for, telling Activision that they need to cut the price of all this stuff is something that is probably very hard to get passed.

I enjoyed Destiny, and I feel I got my moneys worth out of it (never got the hate), but I only ever got the base game, and am completely befuddled by the options on everything ever since that I just don't care.

Back to Splatoon for me.

This was never a realistic solution because Bungie doesn't set prices, Activision does, and Activision isn't going to cannibalize sales of the CE of one of their best selling IPs. Be realistic now.
We shouldn't have Collector Edition DLC in the first place. Pure exploitation move.

So basically what happened was Bungie didn't have an option for people to buy this stuff separately from a bundle which included the original game and DLC that people playing right now already had.

This understandably pissed people off because the only way to get these emotes etc was to rebuy things they've already bought.

People raised a ruckus about this, Bungie heard them and added the option to buy the stuff separately.

But now, swoop! (That's the sound of thousands of goal posts being moved). Existing players shouldn't have to pay for this stuff! There should be exclusive cosmetic content for existing players, for free!

Oh wait, there is already? Swoop! All cosmetic content to ever be released for this game should be free to their existing customers!

It's becoming exceedingly clear that this topic is not at all about these emotes or dances or whatever. It's about people being dissapointed with Destiny for a multitude of other reasons.

I'm on the record in the last week as calling Destiny my most dissapointing videogame of all time, and I stand by that. But can we stop pretending that Bungie somehow doesn't have the right to charge an extra $20 for some lame cosmetic stuff in their "collectors editions" like tons and tons of games do?

y'know, if Bungie wanted me to spend more money on their game, instead of these stupid shenanigans, they could just go ahead and launch the Steamworks PC version. I'd double dip the second I had cash to spare.

I literally have a fully explanatory explanation on the previous page. It's not about their right to charge. It's about them pretending to be apologetic and then not actually acting that way.

There's it so much goodwill you can burn through though.

I'm not sure "they're still learning" is a valid excuse at this point.

I don't see this as a question of good will, I see it as a transaction, nothing more. Bungie, despite their inability to communicate well from time to time (to time), makes shooters that I and my friends enjoy. I have lots of fun spending time playing with my friends, and we even accessorize to make our shaders match, compete for kill scores in the Prison, and race each other to checkpoints in strike/heroic/nightfalls.

On their dropping the communication ball...so what? They're comprised of humans, and humans come off poorly. It was a mistake with a real actual outcome that doesn't have much of an impact on me. And even then, they separated some stuff out and gave me the option to get it. It's an option I don't see myself exercising right now either. But it's there if I ever change my mind, and that's OK (so long as I don't get ads popping up mid-game telling me to power up my guardian with Mountain Dew or something).

Red Bull. Their partnership is with Red Bull.

Oi, don't diss CE exclusive DLC! Because of that I have rarest item in the game, alternative shell for Ghost! :D

That they apparently are going to kill off in TTK.

Wait, what? I love my red ghost.

I haven't seen a single post of moving goalposts asking for the CE content to be free. No one is. Simply calls for reasonable pricing.

You also ignored all the posts outlining how the value proposition is inconsistent within their own bundles and prior precedent with physical vs digital bundles.

Are we going to see a GOTY edition with all the DLC included priced at $60 for a new player like me? I'm not overly concerned about skins and cosmetic things, just game content.

Honestly don't wait for a goty it's cheaper to get the base game now and if you more get the season pass. There is another problem : you roughly finish the main game around Level 18 to 20 but the dlc level is about 25 so you need to so end game farming in the vanilla version in order to enjoy the dlc. And that's end game farm is the core of destiny, so if you don't like it it's best to not purchase dlc right away

Yes, I've ignored them because they're silly. When has a collector's edition ever been about value proposition? I don't see this outrage about the $20 single mount I can buy in WoW if I like.

If you are upset about how much the actual expansion costs, that's cool and I get it. I haven't bought a piece of Destiny DLC yet even though I bought the game day 1 and still play it occasionally, because I don't think it's worth it. Too expensive. Totally agree.

I just think people upset about the collector's edition content are being a bit silly.

It's not just about their communication skills.

I guess people just have different tolerance levels.

Maybe some people expected them to use common sense and price those items at a reasonable price?

Wait, what? I love my red ghost.

lol is this true? The mascot for the game is gone?

That is current speculation because apparently Peter Dinklage didn't have time and/or interest to do more VA for Ghost for TTK. People expect it to be killed off and maybe get new one with new VA or it just will be mute for next 9 years :D

Maybe Ghost talks again in TTK, but atm it seems like it won't.

lol just saw this article on Engadget. Main stream media also picking this up. Hilarious Bungie.

sooo...basically I'm gonna stick with TTK and get my vip shaders and Sparrow....not paying an extra 20 for no real value. Now if they put armor and gear behind it that would be a different story.

Maybe some people expected them to use common sense and price those items at a reasonable price?

Don't know where they got those expectations from. Again, I can't think of a single digital collectors edition from the last year that was a reasonable value proposition in an online multiplayer game. And they really don't need to be. That's why they're collectors editions.

Bungie signed up to Activision cause they wanted that COD money

They could have gone ANYWHERE

Stupid to blame Activision for being Activision, when you should blame Bungie for wanting to be like that.

Activision has the money and the retailer connections to support any kind of vision, I can't blame Bungie for going with them. But as far as pricing goes I highly doubt that Bungie can change much about it.

I wouldn't mind if they killed him off and just gave me one with a new voice. Preferably a female one.

The physical Vanilla Destiny LE was $99 and Digital Guardian was $89. Same software, but $10 difference due to no physical goods in digital bundle.

Fast forward to TTK. Both Physical and digital CE are $80. Same software, but no price discount for lack of physical goods in digital bundle.

TTK LE is $60 for Vanilla plus 2 EXP. Meaning $20 more for CE physical and digital extras.

Bungie pricing the CE digital goods as a separate $20 purchase is inconsistent with their bundle pricing due to lack of physical extras.

Get it?

Their expectations are set by the pricing of the previous expansions of 20$.

So we're comparing the value proposition of their previous expansions vs the value proposition of the digital collector's edition bonus items.

That makes absolutely no sense.

I wouldn't mind if they killed him off and just gave me one with a new voice. Preferably a female one.

Sooner or later Bungie has to consider doing that move, Peter just is super busy now with GoT and other stuff that came with career boost given by GoT. Getting him to do VA or it even to fit his schedule can become real problem for Bungie if they keep doing DLC releases this back to back.

So we're comparing the value proposition of their previous expansions vs the value proposition of the digital collector's edition bonus items.

That makes absolutely no sense.

Why not? Company saying full DLC pack and few cosmetic items are worth same amount of money. How that makes any sense?

At the end of the day what they are offering isn't worth it. Period. Maybe to some people it is, but not me.

The people that are arguing to just "not buy it" but telling everyone not to complain are being completely dismissive. It's as if they refuse to acknowledge that a problem could exist for others that doesn't exist for them.

The whole "I can afford it" line? So can I but I don't want to. I can afford a $100 smoothie, but I would laugh at anyone who tried to sell me one and anyone who tried to buy one. Because although I can afford it, I can't sustainably afford it if that becomes the norm.

People need to realize that the people aren't upset just about this specific pricing model. But about the trend that it speaks to. They don't want gaming as a whole to follow this pricing structure.

Right now if we are going to talk value proposition there are many other games out that have better ones. Ones that don't charge you exhorborant amounts for basic items. If all games went the Destiny direction, is honestly just stop gaming. It'd be too much of a pain.

So I guess it will be easy to identify people with more money than sense by their use of the new emote.

I remember the good old days when horse armour was only $5. We never appreciated how good we had it...

They shouldn't have been greedy and priced the Digital CE at 70. Then they could have charged 10 dollars for this crap and people wouldn't freak out as much.

yes it does

No it really doesn't. Orthogonal's post lays out a totally legitimate complaint about this pricing structure. It's a lesser value compared to their previous collector's editions. This makes sense.

However people like you complaing that it's a lesser value compared to their previous expansions are missing the point, muddling the issue and making it appear to be simple whining.

Okay, I was thinking about buying this game, but if this is how they treat their fans then fuck it. There's plenty of other games I can play instead.

20 dollars. FFS.

The ability to buy the CE digital extras for those who want it is good but the price for it is really steep, for $20 i'd expect bungie to post me a replica strange coin in the post also.

The biggest issue still is the price across different regions, $40 is not £40 nor is it euro40 and I presume this $20 digital pack will also be £20 which is the biggest rip off in destiny yet...

The price for a digital CE upgrade is totally in line with other games when you look at something like...Diablo 3 ROS expansion, which had a $20 digital upgrade that came with:

a collection of exclusive helm- and weapon-transmogrification recipes to distinguish your hero among the champions of Sanctuary; a loyal Spectral Hound minion to keep your adventurers company on their epic journeys; three additional character slots to accommodate new heroes; an in-game Treasure Goblin companion pet for World of Warcraft; and an assortment of Crusader-themed Battle.net portraits and Malthael-themed decals for StarCraft II.

So you get some cosmetic shit and some character slots. CEs have always been expensive, Destiny isn't the first and it certainly won't be the last.

$20 for emotes and skins is a rip off!

Now, if they toss in an aluminum stamped DVD box, a keychain shaped like the Destiny logo, and an art book small enough to fit inside the DVD box, that's a bargain.
