Awesome. Just awesome. The country may take many steps backwards, but sometimes we go forwards too.

Now let's take care of guns and institutional racism.

Oh fuck yeah! It's about time.
Kind of a shame Denver had it's pride day last weekend. I would have loved to see the reactions when it happened.

Roberts:

"If you are among the many Americans--of whatever sexual orientation--who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today's decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not Celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it."

I thought 6-3 ... Man

O well, at least it happened

awwwwwwww that's huge!

What a wonderful news for anyone who believes in marriage equality

I'm actually quite moved by this news. And elated, of course :')

I could get married everywhere I'd please in the United States. That's major.

I'm not American but why wasn't this done before?

Why was it state by state before?

Nothing in our laws said gays had the right to marry. It was up to the states to decide that because our Congress was never going to let it pass. Eventually a case against the gay marriage bans made its way to the SCOTUS. And here we are.

Fine by me

Thanks Roberts

The nature of injustice is that we may not always see it in our own times. The generations that wrote and ratified the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment did not presume to know the extent of freedom in all of its dimensions, and so they entrusted to future generations a character protecting the right of all persons to enjoy liberty as we learn its meaning."

Goddamn.

DAMN

Only 5-4, with four dissenting opinions? Damn, I figured this ruling would be less divided than the ACA ruling.

But in any case, WOOOOO!

This is writing.

Damn onions. They'll get you every time.

Scalia said:
Until the courts put a stop to it, public debate over same-sex marriage displayed American democracy at its best. Individuals on both sides of the issue passionately, but respectfully, attempted to persuade their fellow citizens to accept their views.
This is some revisionist-ass history, Antonin.

SCOTUS blog on when it takes affect:

So to be clear, this decision effectively legalizes SSM throughout the USA in all 50 states, and each state much recognize each other's licenses as valid?

Yes. Technically, I believe the Court's decision won't take effect until the mandate issues in about two weeks, although states are of course free to start implementing it sooner. (After the Court declined to take up the SSM question last fall, meaning that it let stand lower court rulings striking down the bans, same-sex marriages started happening the same day in some of the states, such as Virginia.

You can be sure the religious states will also pull the "we're burdened by paperwork give us more time, no marriages until next year" excuse

Oh how I cannot wait for the salty reactions. Huckabee and the Duggars especially.

So very happy for all of my gay and lesbian friends who have been waiting on this day for what seems like eternity.

congrats! now you can live through the quiet desperation that fills the hearts of all married people.

But really, didn't see this day coming in my lifetime. Crazy how fast it came about once the first domino fell. I really thought this was going to take decades to accomplish.
