NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

Also done yesterday before I headed to work, and in the same vein, a world of misleading spirits, mediums, sleeping goddesses, and witches with familiars:

~2 hours! I enjoy how these look so I'll probably be making a lot more. >_>

So, while browsing a nsfw tumblr blog I found a pic that I just loved at first sight. Here's my attempt at trying to draw the girl from the image. The background stuff I made up on the spot (it's basically pencil vomit)

Could be better, could be much better but meh, it'll do for now.

I did this one in about an hour. It's modeled off my boyfriend, although he's not actually a DJ, but he is addicted to energy drinks.

This one took about three hours. I kept tweaking everything because I wasn't happy with it, but I am now.

Eep! I love it. (I'm wearing one of my several Harley Quinn shirts right now)

Thank you! :D I haven't been strictly timing, but around 2-3 hours each (using podcast episodes listened as my metric, heh).

Haha, I'm kind of relieved to hear that. I was scared you were going to be some wizard who could do those in half an hour or so.

And yeah, that's usually what I do too when I'm illustrating — listen to a podcast or catch up on TV.

Does this count as NSFW? I am becoming desensitized to these things.. LOL No one is naked so.. okay???
Thank you/kiriban pic for gaining 1000+ fans on smackjeeves for my friend's comic (which includes my characters and I guess half of my script work haha!):

~3.5 hours?
I joke a lot about not really knowing how to draw male bodies because I do it based on my feelings on whether it feels right or not. I am sure this is what many male artists do drawing women, so.. lol

'Nother landscape thing, I kept the sketch layer on this one.

I'm glad my answer was a relief. :P There are definitely artists who can do much more impressive environments in way less time, but I ain't one of 'em! They've inspired me to drill down and try to do these daily though, so maybe someday I'll unlock that wizard specialization, hehe.

lol, I dunno when Harley became so famous so fast

she's everywhere, one of the most requested

Mik, CB and Lilith, your stuff is amazing. Keep it up!

Thanks man.

Been busy still with a some commission stuff. I have only two left. I did squeeze in a personal sketch though, which felt really really good and is making even more excited to finish up these commissions. It's nice being able to call the shots I guess.

3 or so hours I think? A bit wonkey but can't be too bothered. Haven't drawn in the moleskine in what feels like donkeys years.

I've started doing little environment speedpaints, mostly to mess around with colors.

Incredible work dude. Photoshop?

EDIT: Im far from having the mad skillz shared by many here, but this thread has definitely inspired me to draw something Im proud of once a day. Here's a sketch of mine from a while back:

Does anyone have any advice on getting comissions?
I've been advertising on deviantart and facebook, but haven't gotten anything.

Looking among my friends (of which many do art) , you gotta go hard EVERYWHERE, DA and facebook are okay but get an account setup at newgrounds , tumblr , twitter and then get artist alley tables at local conventions , have business cards.

Try to make friends among the local art/comic community (if you live in a city , there will be one , it's just a matter of seeking them out) and cross promote.

There's also going to be a disconnect between what people will pay and what you think your worth , you have to find a middle ground. If you think you're art is worth 25$ an hour and it takes you 2 hours to draw something , you might find out that potential customers think that drawing is only worth 20 bucks.

Also, and this is the only bad advice - I've seen many people , especially on Deviant art and tumblr , make pretty good money by catering to specific crowds. Quality is much less important with these people as most are just happy to get a drawing of their ... thing. But going down that road leads to darkness depending on just how far askew your personal tastes are with the requests you get.

There's also a fair bit of luck involved here, simply posting art to tumblr and deviant art gets it out there and hopefully - someone makes something you drew at least a little bit popular which pulls in a bigger audience and eventually that can lead to someone willing to pay for a commission. When you do get that commission , do NOT bite off more than you can chew , give a reasonable timeframe and don't agree to do something that makes you uncomfortable for any reason. Also have a short written contract ready , you don't want to have to make 10 drawings for someone if they aren't happy with the first 1.

I've been wanting to get into drawing for a while. After doing some research, I decided to pick up this book. I'm only stumped on what edition to get... I thought it'd be best to just pick up the latest edition, but then I started hearing complaints about it and recommendations to pick up earlier versions instead. Anyone familiar with the different editions who could give me a recommendation?

U guys continue to amazing me. Ive been trying to draw more lately. I haven't done any original works yet though, just quick face sketches of a style i want to emulate. :3 in due time...

Thanks. Right now I have no car and no money at all, zip, so I can't do the business cards and tables. I'm trying to do this so I can get some money in my pocket. I am so with you on the written contract thing. I can imagine stuff going wrong. I got a few commissions when I was in school, but they were so few and far between. I had to do re-draws for a person who wanted me to design a store. I told her I can't do that I only do portraits, but she insisted. I ended up have to redraw it about five times and she still wasn't happy, but I ended up with some money. A lot of people said they wanted me to do a drawing, but never hit me up and when I checked up on them they either changed their mind or say that they'll hit me up. One other person was on some bull. She kept on forgetting to bring me the photo for me to draw.

In the style of that other thing I made.. another one!:

~3-4 hours?

Also sketches on bus the last few days! (Some of them were incorporated into image above!)

~15 minutes each page

~ 35 minutes total

I know that as budding artists you have to be constantly updating your porfolio website with new work but I haven't updated mines in nearly 1.5 months after my friend showed me SEO which scared me away in addition to overhauling it. Trying to show a consistent "style" but it seems to be all over the place. Still been producing stuff though.

On the topic of self-portraits, here's the most realistic self-portrait I've done yet. Took about 3.5 hours to add in details everywhere and add in a background (I did it while sitting on my fire escape using a hand held mirror).

I'm debating whether or not to ink it traditionally with liner pens or digitally but I'm scared of ruining it unless I take my time. So Photoshop it will go to for ink/colors. Maybe do both. Regardless, I have a new avatar picture.

Also did this last Saturday. Want to say it took me about 4.5/-5hours in total since it was initially a drawing that I started in pencils, left it incomplete because I couldn't decide a hair style before I came back to last Friday/Saturday. To digitally ink it is going to be a pain in the ass so I might do the colors first. No reference for the figure other than for the hand occasionally as well my bedroom for the window with fire escape in the background.

And here's a WIP on something on on/off using my brother as inspiration since wore a hoodie.

Fantastic work in this thread as well as the Arts & Farts thread and Self-Teaching Art thread as always. There's some great stuff in this page with color.

I really enjoy your work Jipan. There are so many great renderers and figure drawing/character artists. You have a natural style that is really engaging to my eye. Keep it up!

Thanks! And yep, all Photoshop.

Unfortunately we can't see your drawing. :( Try hosting your images on imgur or min.us or even start an art blog, it's always a good way to track progress.

Ah okay thanks for the heads up, fixed it.

Some sketches I made today:

Haven't posted anything in awhile because I've been trying to fill up my sketch book, which is really hard to scan because of its size.

I wanted to practice drawing outside of my comfort zone so I did a few sketches of males faces. More often than not my drawings of men end up just looking weird so I usually shy away from drawing them. I don't know how many times I've started over on some of these :0

Thanks, I appreciate it and dutifully noted! It's nice get that feedback after working on the art but not sharing all that often.
Just wanted to say you guys are all amazing. I can (barely) draw stick figures, I don't even know where to begin on the amazing stuff you guys do.
As I always say, anyone can learn to draw regardless of skill level; I didn't go to art school (went to a state college) but I'm learning new techniques. No shame in just drawing for yourself initially or attending a few meet up groups where people draw. It's all lines, references, and geometry in the end of the day. Everyone started out rusty.

Finished doing a quick speed digital painting of a live jazz band that was performing in the hotel lounge a where I'm currently typing this post from now. It's not perfect but I think I got the gist of their gestures/individual instruments/colors. It was pretty intense but fun to do. About an hour give or take.

I wouldn't bother picking up books. Instead, start practicing by drawing what you see around you. Begin with simple 2d shapes and once you've got the proportions down, start drawing 3 dimensional objects. Then add perspective, then shading, colour, and so on.

More drawings from bus commutes!
I got the next couple of days off, so maybe you'll see something more polished than these soon:
Around 10 - 15 min per page.
lol and yes, I'm just carrying around some disney-lisenced chinatown softcover notebook to sketch in.

Been crazy busy at work and didn't have time to do anything. Today though things calmed down and I started this:

t2Pt74U.jpg

It took me around 10 minutes before work, plus 30 minutes during the lunch break, 30 minutes after work and almost 2 hours at home. I post it here because this is what I did today, but I will probably finish it up tomorrow and upload it to the Arts&Farts thread and maybe ArtStation...

Hopefully things calm down at work for a while and I can go back to my drawing a day stuff!
