NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

I'm trying to get back into the swing of things

Was drawing something static, boring and tedious, so i did a couple of very quick doodles of something more lively.

Reminds me of when i wanted to try animation, some years ago, but otherwise i don't usually dabble in this "cutsey" style.

Today's environment sketches. This time I tried mixing parts of something resembling the Colorado River with Hawa Mahal, from India.

So, I completely forgot how to draw faces within the span of only 1 week...

*sigh*, here's the rough draft of what I wanted to do for the current gaf art challenge:

Edit: I think I just got out of my funk:

Haven't done anything digital in forever it feels like AND it (along with a pic for reference) helped me brush back up to where I was last week skill wise. Might turn this into my entry for the art challenge.

Uhh.. 45 minutes?

Like 4 hours lol. Lineart is always a killer.

Hey Servbot24, I quite like your linework and flat-shaded stuff more than the fully shaded stuff. It overall feels a bit blurry and the colors too desaturated and mainly cold. But what bothers me the most is the blurriness of them, anyway.

The designs are looking cool though. For your latest I would try to at least differentiate the background and the legs, right now they share the same colors. Even if the legs are supposed to be metallic, I would still maybe make the background a bit lighter and also add some fresnel around many of the metallic outlines.

Edit: I see her right leg has some. Still the metal doesn't read like total metal, maybe try to add more stuff reflecting on it?

Thanks for the feedback! :D Yeah the line work tends to get a better response I've noticed, the main reason I do a lot of shaded work is because as a consumer I'm just more familiar with industries where realism is in demand, so I try to get better at that. Tryna move on from my day job :P

Not sure about the blurriness, that may be because I use a texture brush on a paper texture canvas. I'll try a different technique next time. The colors are indeed desaturated, I did that because I'm a bit insecure with my colors and wanted to just let the focus be on the lines. I gotta get over that though.

If I do end up finding a stronger direction with the flat design, I definitely need to figure out how to make them look like "showpieces" rather than just random designs on a page.

I don't know how this might work for characters, but you can try looking around the internet for art you like because of the color, and then try to use those colors in your art directly? I know it's not the best way to get used to colors probably, but for me it worked (I mean, besides learning the basics about colors and all that, obviously).

I don't know if this is too low level for you or not, but I got this book and while I knew some stuff already, I learnt quite a bit as well:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1933492961/?tag=neogaf0e-20

It's $30 but I found the Scott Robertson "how to" books to be quite insightful!

Now with flats and some linework fixes.. which I am sure I will continue to fix when I try to move onto shading.. hahaha..
tumblr_novv2smGpA1tb3rvdo1_r1_1280.png

I have to keep telling myself to keep going out of my love for my character more than anything else.

Cross post:

It's a work in progress still

coloring animals is friggen hard lol I think I need to stop playing with the chalk brush with transfer turned on or something... (continues to use the chalk brush with low opacity + transfer)

Well the thing about color theory is that the basics bear repeating no matter what level you're at :) and yeah Scott is awesome

I actually use the technique of sampling another image a lot of the time to varying results, but I usually plan that out from the beginning. If I do line work without even thinking about it, nothing feels right when it comes tome to choose a color. Gotta plan that out to begin with

Here's a little animation I made today:

Today's environment sketches.

Top one layout is kinda boring. Lack of perspective and objects make it kinda flat, but oh well, this is to learn so it works!

Bartering with an Orc.
Not going too well.

Nothing fancy, i know, but probably the most outright fun i've had with PS in forever.
Digital painting is just stressing (at least for me) so it was nice to break the mold with something simple and quick like this.

Suggestions and critiques would be very lovely, if you have them.

I've backed away from digital painting in Photoshop that I haven't done anything in about 2.5 weeks. Overthinking about it has been driving me nuts in addition to shying away from posting stuff to my Tumblr. Only way to get rid of that fear is to produce more stuff. In its place, been drawing in the sketchbook as usual and doing some watercolor paint pieces.

Spent several hours just drawing yesterday and produced these bad boys:

Memorial Day tribute (I'm not really patriotic but figured I show a nice gesture)

Showing size/scale is something slightly outside my comfort zone so this one was fun. For some odd reason, I had Jurassic Park/monsters in mind. My scanner cropped the left side so I'll probably end up rescanning it and stealth edit my post.

Started this about 3 weeks ago but finally finished it yesterday. The scan came out slightly blurry in the background.

Bonus: two watercolor pieces that I did this year (scan quality might look off because of my scanner settings):

Using one color.

I had no idea what I was doing here. More of a reintroduction to watercolor painting after a hiatus.

More thumbnails done today:

Trying to mix this island in Japan called Gunkanjima with some old European buildings.
I've noticed a lot of my sketches have very similar perspectives so I will try to get some more variation up there mixed with some more unique stuff.

The stuff I posted is something I did this morning before leaving for the office.
Here's some stuff I did during the lunch break:

11377903_471185263047339_853153536_n.jpg

I'm flat out terrible at vehicles. Like, I've almost never done them and I wasn't even looking at references so my amount of ideas for them is close to nonexistent. I will do smaller thumbnails (silhouettes almost) to try and get some shape I like. Either way, it was fun and I learn with every single of these sketches so why not!

Forgot to post the finished thing. It's been about half a year since I've considered antyhing I've painted "finished"

pantherafspiujm.jpg

Back to commissions. Soon I shall be free of my shackles... I really want to focus on getting some dope ass backgrounds. And studying again, I haven't really studied for a long while now :c

Started this but don't really know where I'm going with it, might put it aside

Nah man don't do that! I love the lighting in this and the colour scheme!

thanks! I think once I get some photo reference going I'll feel less frustrated. Also having a hard time nailing the composition. I actually put quite a bit of effort into it but still doesn't feel right.

and your work is looking beautiful as always! the drop shadows make me so happy, haha

Here are some "speed paints" which are really just more of thumbnails I guess. 40-60 minutes each

tumblr_noxvy1rnba1rom6duo1_1280.jpg

I'm taking environment painting class this summer so hopefully these will improve.

Aha thank man. And I know that feeling all too well. Sometimes its the colours, sometimes its the shape, sometimes it's hard to tell what the problem is. Either way good luck!

galesketchfsryuky.jpg

Finished today , 4 to 5 hours. Really just trying to get these commissions over with. So I felt a bit lazy but at the same time I suppose I'm not supposed to over work a sketch if what they want is a sketch. So much dragon age stuff.

A VERY VERY LONG AWAITED ART TRADE WITH A FELLOW DEVIANTARTER.. lol (1.5 years? hahaahaaaaaaa..)
I was planning to colour it but my wrist hurts now.

Their OC with Nightwing.

That's pretty cool. I love your line work and shading!
It's all just pencil on paper, right?

Looks great Servbot. The whole big guy and small guy working together remind me a bit of Ori. The big guy's proportions are great!!

Here's some stuff I did today. Following the vehicles I did yesterday, I tried to do some vehicles based off insects:

11296931_620883431382068_529506920_n.jpg

They look kinda like toys so I'll try to add more realism on the next ones. I'm learning quite a bit while doing them though, so all is good!

Hello everyone,

I recently released my own indie game project on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/318860/

The name is Malebolgia and it's a cel-shaded action-adventure game set in Hell.

The reason I'm posting here, is that I'm actually still looking to have a piece of artwork for the game. For promotional purposes and for Steam Trading Cards.

I'd like to ask if any of you talented artists would have interest in this proposal? We can of course discuss payment and exact scope (what materials I need).

Please PM if interested.

Some reader response stuff!

I sometimes feel bad because some of you work really hard and draw as a career and I feel like I should step up my game and work on portfolio pieces and stuff too..!
But then I just post stuff like these, content in my own character wankery. <____<
Welp. I uh.. one day. One day I will work harder!

EDIT: Now celshaded but will be changed as I continue working on it since I want to add in a background and to blend in some shades and highlights more.

What I did since I last posted here:

11324387_455107474660339_1937350390_n.jpg

The bottom right one is terrible :/

11324488_1630835430493060_1180066050_n.jpg

Some more stylized one.

11330657_836926876397182_1399000841_n.jpg

A bunch of thumbnails. The one with the big wheel has heavily based off something I saw the other day, I think from Scott Robertson. He does a lot of awesome stuff.

What I did since I last posted here:

Great designs man. I always envied people who can do sci-fi vehicles. Or sci-fi anything really...

tomkpreviewcqutc.jpg

A few hours. Decided to paint over a really old picture while testing out new brushes. Started using one and now I can't even be bothered to try the others...I'll try and finish it eventually.

^ Is there a style you're trying to achieve or more realistic proportions? (I'm assuming the latter)
It seems like her neck is too thick for her head, are arms are a little too long (and the forearm of her right arm is much longer than her left forearm), and her calf looks a little short compared to her thigh (calves are shorter, but not by as much as you have it. I would lengthen the calf a little and shorten the thigh a little to balance it more).
Are you using a reference for this or it is all off the top of your head? A reference or posable doll might help with some of the proportion stuff.
But otherwise it looks like it could be an interesting pose. Is she going to be a superhero or something?

And I have finished my thing!!!
starfighter_eclipse___forge_by_meibatsu-d8v5a0t.png

And detail of faces with grain overlay turned down and lineart emphasized:

I was trying to at first imitate another style but gave up because it was too hard and just did it my way.. which looks pretty ok to me! It's done at least! Soul at peace.
It felt like it took a million hours. .. Probably closer to 15ish?

^ yeah I used a reference, it's more like a quick study...

The left forearm was forshortened (need to practice for the upcoming gaf art challenge), but I do thank you for the calves and neck. I need to work it out too as well as proportions. Thanks!

Yeah, the left forearm looks about right (although the upper arm on the left is a bit long). But if you lead your eye behind to where her right elbow should be, you'll get probably get the sense that her right forearm is too long.

Just as a quick check to see where you tend to skew things, you can always overlay the image and see if you can be mindful of that in the future. Then you can stylize away from it if you choose:
http://orig13.deviantart.net/1343/f/2015/148/4/d/new_canvas_by_meibatsu-d8v5pj6.jpg (NAKED MODEL LADY)
I tried to align her by her shoulders and knee, so I hope that helps!

Thanks!! seeing the stuff you do, adding some scifi bits would probably be easy stuff for you :P

Anyway I did some more vehicle sketches based off some of the silhouettes I posted yesterday

My first mechas / (mostly) two-legged robots!
I still lack a mental shape library and I can feel it when doing stuff like this.
