Another expensive reward ($900) announced. They need to cool it on the rewards that are around $1,000 already. Should have figured out more stuff around $70-$150.

nobody has backed it, so hopefully they've got the message that it's time to stop the higher tier rewards and start working on add-ons, paypal, etc.

i'm watching that right now actually. the shenmue premiere video from 97/98 contains even earlier stuff. the only version available is very poor quality but you can see so much stuff that changed. character and environments got a big graphical boost, the UI got better, and the world seemed to open up quite a bit. hong kong looked a lot narrower in that video.

The oldest Shenmue video made public is the Project Berkly CGI video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ6-QRThA8A. I remember seeing screenshots for this video in magazines back in 1997 or so, when the game was rumored to be Virtua Fighter RPG.

Then there is also the Shenmue Sega Saturn beta video that was included with the Xbox version of Shenmue II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foZUcPQAMvg. This is also circa 1997, i think. Here is a nice side by side video comparing the Saturn and Dreamcast builds of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-YxOpZ7mDo. The Saturn build also has a lot of scenes from Shenmue II in it.

There is also this great postmortem that Yu Suzuki did at GDC 2014 for Shenmue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amu0_EunHmM. It is an hour long, and he covers the complete history of the game.

There's a promo video that came out when it was fairly advanced in development with stuff like Ryo riding a bicycle and a cut-scene with him on a rooftop in Dobuita. There must be so much excised content in there.

A yes the infamous Ryo on bicycle video.

For those that played the games I encourage you to view the video under the section "What's Shenmue" - http://shenmue.link/us-en/history.html

You can see a lot of beta content (Like Mark originally being part of the Mad Angels) and also it seems like at one point they had a lot more NPC's walking around the environment (Or it could have been a test).

Some neat stuff.

Would be fantastic if you can insert the sentence "Thank you for supporting me" in that gif.

possible spoiler based on a post on shenmuedojo by someone who actually went to baisha village in china:

you have to take a train to get there from guilin. it could be that the train scene from the project berkley video happens in 3.

EDIT: nevermind. apparently the theory was actually debunked in the niconico video.

Did Yu outright confirm that it wasn't happening in 3?

Googling images of Baisha village. It looks beautiful. Reminds me more of a feudal Japanese look than Chinese though, which I'm okay with.

i think i get what yu means when he describes places by their smell. i get the idea of farmland, dust, and humidity smells from this picture alone.

Yeah, I agree. I'd drop more money on this in a heartbeat if they came out with some more decent "cheap" tiers. I'm at $120 at the moment and would probably jump at a decent $150 or $200 reward. These more expensive ones are just not doing it for me.

I'm getting flashbacks to my playthrough on Yakuza Ishin looking at that image. Can't wait to explore a place like that in Shenmue :)

Yeah, and he said the current rendition in the kickstarter vid is more akin to California, so we should be getting something quite different in the final game. Throw in the weather system and time change, it's going to be awesome.

I wish they wouldn't send multiple updates every day. I feel like I signed up to be spammed once I backed this.
well, it's the last week of fundraising so you probably won't have to put up with it much longer. you'll probably see a few coming through over the next few days, but after that they'll probably be a lot more irregular/monthly.

I've been to China like 10 or so times now. The cities have changed a lot from my first visit till my most recent ones, but the more rural locales like Guilin, Hunan & Yunnan are still some of the most beautiful places I've ever visited.

Yu Suzuki is spot-on when he talks about how China can be described by its smell. The pollution aside, the greenness in China has a very different vibe from one region to the other, and it's reflected in the subtle hues of the colour and the smell.

What a strange complaint. Today was the first update in 2 days and before that it was maybe like once a day? For an ongoing Kickstarter that's fairly typical, especially as we near the end. You can manage your notifications by going to Settings > Notifications > Uncheck the Shenmue 3 box:

i can't wait to see the weather system realised in UE4. wet cobblestones, water dripping off ryo's jacket. hope they go the distance with details like that if they can afford to.

Completely agreed. Having lived in Suzhou and Wuxi as a child, his explanation I think provides great context of why I still think many of the environments in both games hold up so well.

The updates about the architect working on the game intrigued me. Does anyone know if most open world games have an architect on staff, or do the game's artists just go on reference material?

Shenmue always felt more "real" in its world to me than other open world games, and I can't tell if it's just because they did it first or because they did it better.

i'm sure a good few modern games will pull in people from the architect profession, but i don't think it's common. real smart move from yu suzuki though, waaaaaaay ahead of the curve on that one.

Thanks for the tip! I didn't know I could disable specific project notifications.

I'd not even considered that. Magic weather is one of the best details in the original Shenmue for me (best representation of snow in a video game ever in my opinion) and anything similar for Shenmue 3 would be awesome.

we probably won't see snow unless the game moves northwards, but rain and fog are certain

I really wished I haven't read that but I think it would have came out anyway. Damn damn.... DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNN! I'm kicking myself when I shouldn't have to. I hope the story surprises me so the person appears when I least expect it.

Lol we all feel the same way.
I think it is at this point right here, you have to decide if you want to avoid spoilers or not.

I put together this animated short in an attempt to bring more awareness to the Kickstarter. The idea was to try and animate a Shenmue themed Mega Man stage.
If you're wondering why I decided to mix the two, it's because we're a couple of guys who have been working on a Mega Man fangame for a couple of years, so we're using our Facebook page that we set up for that game to help promote the campaign.

Don't think I need to add any praise for the Mea Man Shenmue. Pretty cool.

Maybe I'm just not in the loop, but what's with the heavy desire for Paypal? Is it people without credit cards or is it some other issue?
