SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

The oldest Shenmue video made public is the Project Berkly CGI video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ6-QRThA8A. I remember seeing screenshots for this video in magazines back in 1997 or so, when the game was rumored to be Virtua Fighter RPG.

Then there is also the Shenmue Sega Saturn beta video that was included with the Xbox version of Shenmue II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foZUcPQAMvg. This is also circa 1997, i think. Here is a nice side by side video comparing the Saturn and Dreamcast builds of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-YxOpZ7mDo. The Saturn build also has a lot of scenes from Shenmue II in it.

There is also this great postmortem that Yu Suzuki did at GDC 2014 for Shenmue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amu0_EunHmM. It is an hour long, and he covers the complete history of the game.

Will Ryo jump onto a moving train in Shenmue 3?

I put together this animated short in an attempt to bring more awareness to the Kickstarter. The idea was to try and animate a Shenmue themed Mega Man stage.
If you're wondering why I decided to mix the two, it's because we're a couple of guys who have been working on a Mega Man fangame for a couple of years, so we're using our Facebook page that we set up for that game to help promote the campaign.

Love it. Nice work :)

That was fun, but it might be a good idea to put a notice in the video as well since some are too lazy to read descriptions.
Great job on the video btw, I liked it.

Not bad, but the forklift power is blatantly overpowered, so you might want to look into that.

The video is unreal. I've never played a Shenmue game before, but you have encouraged me to back/get a PS4 copy of Shenmue 3.

I have a Dreamcast, time to find an ebay copy of Shenmue 1/2 and find out what all the hype is about.

Edit: Also, this should get it's own thread as others have said. It needs to be seen by all Megaman fans too.

This is absolutely awesome. Megaman remains my favourite series of all time and you totally did both series justice with this. I love the capsule toy dispenser mini boss!

It's 12PM here and we currently have the same amount of new backers that we did yesterday at 6PM. We still have 7 hours to go too. Today is looking good!

This should be one of the arcade games in S3. Incredible work.

Glad you guys enjoyed the video.

Apparently Ryo can jump and climb mountains now. Not so sure jumping randomly is something I want, hahaha.

J: So interesting! So many characters and possibilities… Oh, and now Ryo can jump right?

Y: Yeah, and climb mountains.

He also wants a 1988 style arcade too!

I also want to include an Arcade Game Center from 1988, with SEGA games inside, and one of them could be a forklift arcade game invention, I’m also thinking crazy ideas like that (laughs).

There was a lot of System 16 games in 1988 !

Please ! Please !!!!

Various arcade games between $5.1 million - $6 million would have been interesting stretch goals that would give incentive. Even just one at $5.6 million for incentive to become the must funded Kickstarter game ever.

Good to see the daily amount rising slightly today. Gonna leave it another couple of days before i bump my pledge up a bit.

I believe in 6 million with KS and +4 million after KS (with paypal and those things)
i mean it's not really the number i'm thinking about. it's just development reality. if we miss a key stretch goal for a gameplay mechanic, can they really just implement it after 2 years of extra funding and development?

I'm really hoping to see this clear $7.5M by the time the campaign is done. The combat stuff is important!

The procedural generation goal at $11M sounds great too, it's just a lot less likely to happen.

Typical Kickstarter videogames only bring in 5-10% of the total in Paypal. Funding falls off a cliff once the campaign ends too.

I'd expect good post-campaign numbers only if they can put out an interesting trial. The problem there is that this is a story-based single-player game. A representative trial that looks as good as the finished game is a long way away, and they'd need the extra funds very early in order to implement some of those stretch goals.

Yes, I think they can do... Some features can be implemented months after the launch, there some real examples in modern games:

- Trials Fusion (April 2014): Online Multiplayer (Jan 2015)
- Dark Souls 2 (Mar 2014): New Final Boss (2015)

It's just a possibility, but even in 5 million I think Shenmue 3 will be a great game !

alternatively, ys.net could go looking for extra investors to push the numbers up a bit more too. having a very successful kickstarter could make for a good bargaining chip.

emphasis on the very successful kickstarter part there. the more successful it is, the more proof that the game has an audience to justify investing in, so we've still got to play our part in getting people onboard and convincing them this is a worthwhile endeavour

which it totally is. we're taking a game that didn't get made for 14 years out of the hands of a big publisher, and making it happen ourselves by funding yu and ys.net. it'll set a great standard for the future. fans can truly put their money where their mouth is and get the games they've wanted for years.

though, i don't think we'll ever see a kickstarter quite like this again. but it sets a great precedent that game series aren't just killed off for good at the whims of the moneymen and bean counters.

we're transitioning away from the model where the games that get made are dictated only by the economics of game making, rather than how much they mean to people. what with a pretty high average pledge and all the stories that have come out about how shenmue has changed the lives of people, it's clear that this game is being funded out of love from old fans and curiosity from potential new ones.

the world needs a new shenmue more than ever. there hasn't been a game since that has had such softy ideals of what it can be. that goes for more than just its story. lots of games now are bold with their story telling, but shenmue was bold from top to bottom. its story, setting, graphics, and mechanics were not something seen in games before. we need that kind of boldness again, and this kickstarter is showing that boldness can be pried from the cold hands of bottom-line focussed business executives.

oh yeah, i think 5 million is the point where yu suzuki gets to stretch his design legs and do new things with the series. i'm really glad that we've very nearly hit that point and that the new gameplay mechanics were loaded towards the bottom of the stretch goals. 5 million from KS is going to help make a really great, interesting game.

implementing new features is a bit harder than a new boss or an online mode though, but it's not unheard of. 7.5 million is where the last big new gameplay change is. i hope we can get close to that, but even if we don't i'll be happy with three big new gameplay changes to explore and try out.
