Is Crash Team Racing the best Mario Kart like ?

CTR > Mario Kart 8 = Sonic ASRT > Mario Kart DS > Sonic All Stars > Diddy Kong Racing > Everything else.

That's my personal kart racer hierarchy, anyway.

These threads always end up in a MK vs CTR fanboy war where the minority have actually played both. In other words, a pointless discussion.

Its the citizen kane of kart games. I dont want to know how much time ive spent with this game. We even had regular family-VS sessions every weekend for a decent amount of time. I think i still know most of the Tracks and the shortcuts.t

I really loved that game, but thats probably also due to the fact that i love crash bandicoot in general.

Church.

CTR might be my most played PS1 game ever. I remember when my cousin got the multitap & everyone would bring their controller over to his house. We'd never turn the TV off.

CTR was better than the mario karts of its time, yeah, but can't compare with Mario Kart DD, 7 or 8.

And as people have said, DKR and Sonic all stars transformed are also better than CTR.

That said, CTR is a solid, amazing game on its own.

I don't know, CTR was a game I had no expectations of and it blew me away.
It was way better than Mario Kart ever was, but Diddy Kong Racing is just as good I think.

I think this thread would be better titled "Which is the ultimate kart game?"

I can't decide which I like more, I think I cared about more of the CTR characters but DKR had a ton of game.

this thread is like the 'spot whose first console was a ps1' thread

More like nostalgia. There are folks saying those games from those gens are better than the Kart racers of today. Now thats either nostalgia or people who dont play kart racers anymore, because its not true on any level. MK8, Sonic and even Blur shits all over kart racers from the PS1/N64 gen by now. Its not even close.

MK64 is pretty terrible and most kart-racers that aren't outright bad are more enjoyable, so I'd take CTR over MK64, definitely, but it isn't even as good as DKR and none of them are as good as MKDS, the best kart racer.

I've long held the opinion that CTR is better than MK. I normally keep it to myself as my friends say I'm a hater when I make this claim but I just prefer the mechanics and gameplay. I also like DKR more than I liked MK.

MK8 has a trash single player, the item balance is horseshit, and most of the characters are dumb babies, metals or koopas. That ain't nostalgia talking.

Oh please do me, guess what my first console was

I think CTR definitely held its own on most Mario Kart games. Personally I'd rather play Mario Kart DS and Super Circuit over CTR, but after that I could shuffle CTR in with any of the MKs for next best Kart game.

CTR is junk. It was the best cart racer on the PS1, so there's that.

The best is Sonic...Transformed, and it's still nowhere near as good as MK 7 or 8.

You honestly think there are people, on Gaf of all places, that have played CTR but have never played a MK before?

Never played a MK as much as CTR to understand the deep mechanics of both, it's quite possible yep

...

MK8 is so far ahead all of the mk and mk clones it's not even funny... and he's still not perfect.

Why does Mario Kart 64 get so much hate here? The game is a classic, it has the best battle mode of any kart racer and some really great and memorable tracks. Graphically it looks like ass but the mechanics, music and (most)tracks are perfect. The best thing about CTR and the even better Diddy Kong Racing are the single player adventure modes.

No seriously. It really is.

I'll get shit for this but Blur, Burnout revenge & Split Second were my best arcade racers last gen. Are you saying it played like a kart racer?

On topic, CTR is pure nostalgia talking, try play that game now. The original SNES Mario Kart and MK8 are the goat kart racers IMO.

In any case why do people constantly feel the need to start a whole thread just to go against popular opinion with no real depth or thoughtful reasoning? The threads just turn into x vs y then devolve into mud slinging.

dont hate...

I secretly prefer this to every other N64 kart racer. Doesn't have as much content as DKR, but it has a great sense of speed and a hugely underrated soundtrack. Good to know I'm not the only one that likes the game.

hah j/k. I think it's good too, mentioned it on page one. Better than MK64, but I still like Diddy better.

Also, anyone here played Banjo Pilot? Pretty damned good, for GBA.

My favorite racer ever was Modnation :P So maybe my tastes are a bit flawed. I've never played a good majority of them however, but I feel like track/character/car creators give the genre much needed mileage.

This particular topic is one of the most popular too. Several gens ago, and people randomly bring it back up for some reason. Really odd considering the racers of that gen have looooong since been surpassed.

Isn´t CTR basically a Diddy Konk Racing Rip-off?
2 years after DKR and 3 years after MK?

Yes, but DKR was better than MK64 so /shrug. I cant stomach playing any of them these days besides DKR, the others aged like shit.

The gameplay is sooo good. You always feel like you can do better and it's so fun and easy to pick up but so hard to master.

It's also a Kart game where skill plays much more of a factor than luck. It's pretty much perfect to be honest.

Just look at how that boost stacks up.

Another vote for Sonic Transformed here.

Hell, I credit it with finally inspiring Mario Kart to branch out a bit (200cc, guest Nintendo characters etc).

Not the just need to learn to make the single player worth playing.

Honestly, it felt like quite disapointement when it was released, coming from the original mario kart on snes: slower, looser controls etc. Many years later, it has become one of my favorits in the serie though, go figure.

The one true king of kart racers:

My man! Loved that game so much.
