Fighting Games Weekly | July 13-19 | Stream Monster Yearly: Evolution 2015

Hey GAF i've recently been interested in starting to play some fighting games as I like competitive games and it's basically the only competitive genre I haven't put time into. Coincidentally Ultra Street Fighter 4 is currently free this weekend on steam and on sale, so I figured it's a good chance to try it out. What's the recommended introduction to the game for someone completely new?
Ultrachen has some videos for people new to street fighter (and fighters in general), the first attack series.

Feel free to PM me your room number if you wanna have some games tonight(ultra, xrd), I'll go to the evo pre party but I'll be back early tonight.

Look up the game's basic mechanics: ultras, supers, focus attacks, ex moves, etc...(edit: that thing direct_quote posted is a good start) Then try some characters to see who you'd like, check the web for tutorials/how to play the character you picked. Watching EVO this weekend could help you with choosing a character or even the game you want to play.

There's no clear path on how to start if you're new to the genre, lots of stuff out there that could help with specific things, but throwing them at you when you haven't started playing yet would be too much. Just pick what you like for a start, and come back here(or game's OT) for help when something comes up.

Edit: This is a good read before you start playing a fighting game(mainly for the scrub mentality part), but seeing as you already play other competitive games, you may not need it:

The pics of the anime suite are making me mad jealous. Seeing so many people, friends from all over the country, coming together under one roof to just hang out and play some anime fighters is just... so amazing. I absolutely must go to Evo for sure next year.

Thanks I'll give this a watch.

Yeah looking up how the mechanics work is probably a good idea, I have no idea what any of those words mean. I'm not even sure how to read the instructions the game has for characters move sets.

One of the key things to learn when you start out is how to move and how to block. Since you're starting with SF4, get a feel for walking, dashing (forward and backward) taking note of the how fast/slow they are. Jump around a bit and get a feel for how the jumps feel. Heck fight an AI or something and get a feel for blocking. The golden rule is usually to block low and then react high (say if they jump in.)

Get a feel for your normals. Pick the character you're interested and just spend some time pressing the buttons and getting a feel for how fast they are, what angle they cover, and their purposes. For example, if something goes at an upward angle it's probably a decent anti air. Learn your character's moves, look up videos, information, and just do things and figure out how stuff feels.

Practicing random execution stuff for Xrd tomorrow lol. Not that I'm using him, but I'm having difficulty getting Dust after little Eddie's P shadow.

Harder than I remember.

I used my first steam refund on Yatagarasu. Sorry dudes, it's just not for me. Between the UI, the sound design, terrible voices for the characters and really not digging any character in the game. I just can't justify $15 for that game. I spend more time with kof 2k2UM than Yata, and I paid $3 for that.

Standing in line behind Daigo waiting to check in at the hotel. I wanted to get a picture with him, but at least 10 people have asked to take pictures with him in the last 5 minutes. Should I do it???

Sorry Smedwicks, I ended up running some serious sets in Rentahamster's room with the JPs and others including vulva. Then I ended up helping Nemo a little while ago, lol

Then you probably saw me helping Nemo. lol

Just got back from the anime suite, that was some shit. It was great to run into some people, including some that I haven't seen in years. And I was not expecting to play that many JP players in Melty Blood. I got bodied, it was great.

There's some talk about running the suite back on Sunday. I hope it happens.

edit: lol jiyuna said mike ross had a suite on the same floor as the anime suite.
Apparently, Mr Wizard was next door as well. Anime heads should have brought out all of the dakis for him. (Someone brought a Monster Quest daki as it was, which pretty much says everything.)

There's no way I'm missing EVO next year. This year I'd knew it'd be a close call, but I'm ready for next year. I really felt like I needed to purchase the next gen hardware(PS4, Wii U) first to stand a chance this year. All that coupled with my first few months of adjusting to rent payments it was just too much on my wallet to go to EVO. Next year since I won't have to buy any consoles, I'll just get a plane ticket ^.^

I now have more than enough time now to prepare. I look forward to meeting everyone next year till then all you'll see of me is internet post lol

Also... I've never used a bidet. I MUST PREPARE LOL.

No sweat, we had my Ultra setup, SolarKnight brought his Wii U and we had people playing off the gamepad screen, shit was poverty as hell and great lol

Eid Mubarak to all my FGW brothers!

The deadline for EVO Nostradamus competition is 1 and a half hour from now as that's when pools start. You can still submit after that (and I will still count the points) but you will not be eligible for the reward.

Also I am upping the reward as I am feeling generous. $20 plus DMC4SE PC copy (or equivalent on Steam if you already have it) for first place!

The time zone difference has me up way earlier than I'd like to be.

Is anyone up about to get breakfast before pools start up?

Time zone screwed me over hard and i might not be able to watch nearly as much.Damn.

I'm on the west coast and for some reason I woke up at 1 am. I tried sleeping until 5 am and I just gave up. I really could have used more hours seeing as SF4 is all day today.

FIRST ANNUAL NEOGAF FGW EVO 2015 PREDICTION COMPETITION!

I am personally holding NeoGAF's first ever EVO prediction contest. I will be listing a bunch of questions and you have to predict as many as you can. The person who gets the most points gets awarded $20 by me personally!

Here are the questions (finals/top 8 means finals including all days):

1) How many US players will be in the top 8 of Persona 4, Tekken 7 and GGXrd combined? 2

2) How many US players will be in the top 8 of USF4? 3

3) How many “gods” will be in the top 8 of UMVC3 (gods are Justin Wong, FChamp, ChrisG)? All three

4) How many players will cry on stage (whether tears of joys or tears of sadness)? 5

5) Will Ono appear in a cosplay? If so then which character? (getting the 2nd question right will award you bonus points)? No

6) How many different characters will we see in the top 8 of USF4 (counter picks included)? 11

7) How many different characters will we see in the top 8 of UMVC3 (counter picks included)? 11

8) How many different characters will we see in the top 8 of both the Smash games combined (counter picks included)? [Same characters from the two different games count as different characters so if there's a Fox in a Smash 4 top 8 and a Fox in Melee top 8, that counts as two separate characters as they are different games] See this post for a better explanation.13

9) How many fatalities will we see in the top 8 of MKX? 11

10) Will Tekken x SF be at EVO? If yes then name two characters that they will unveil at the event (getting the 2nd question right will award you bonus points). No ;_;

11) Which game will have the highest stream numbers at EVO in a top 8? Bonus question: Which game will have the lowest stream numbers in a top 8? (cannot specify same game for both in order to increase your changes to get at least one right)Highest: USFIV. Lowest: Persona

12) How many players will appear in more than one top 8 at EVO? None

13) How many grand final bracket resets will there be at EVO? 2

14) Will there be more Season 1 or Season 2 characters in Killer Instinct top 8? Bonus question: By how much? More season 1. By 5

15) How many different countries will be represented in the top 8 of USF4? 4

16) Which game will have the longest top 8 runtime? Bonus question: Which game will have the shortest run time in top 8? (Cannot specify same game for both in order to increase your chances to get at least one right) Smash for WiiU the longest and MKX the shortest

17) Will any player make a repeat win at this year’s EVO from last year? Justin Wong and CDJR

18) Will there be a brand new fighting game announcement at EVO? Bonus question: If so then what will it be? None

19) At what time will EVO finish at (rounded to the nearest hour) on the final day? 10pm PST

20) FINAL QUESTION: Who will win EVO for each individual game?
UMvC3: Justin Wong
USFIV: Kazunoko
GGXrd: Ogawa
Persona: Souji
Smash for WiiU: Zero
Smash Melee: Leffen
MKX: MIT
Tekken 7: Saint
KI: CDJR

Getting a regular question right will give you 5 points. Getting a bonus question right will give you 3 points. Final question is worth 3 points per game you get right.

In the event of a tie, the questions that involved guessing with numbers will be used as tie breakers (ie. who got the closest to the guesses across all questions).

You can post your responses in FGW or you can PM me your answers. Deadline is before the start of EVO 2015.
