Steam Controller trailer, $50

Well, I see a lot of aiming with the movement keys. It reminds me of how trackball players play.

Isn't that pretty standard even at higher levels of play? Like in CS I think you're supposed to keep your mouse on the level of where you anticipate you opponent to be and get him in sight by using your movement keys. I think I saw a video on that once.

It is pretty standard for the scout, where your advantage is movement speed and being hard to hit.

Does something like Brothers still require a controller? That might not be compatible then?

There is no reason why it shouldn't work. All the 360 controls match up to the Steam Controller. You probably couldn't use the pad as a trackball or mouse though since the game hasn't allowed that anyway, so you'd be stuck emulating analogue movement

I am most interested in seeing how intuitive heavily cursor-driven games play with this, like Dragon Age or C&C. Whether it will be fatiguing or annoying.

Will the Steam controller likely end up as a good emulator controller for something like Dolphin?

It has everything to be the ultimate non wii remote controller for Dolphin, yes. For instance, we can use the right trackpad as the pointer in a shooter or tilt it in games like New Super Mario Bros (like in those bridges that you control by tilting the controler).

There's something I find quite amusing in the short moment that BJ Blazkowicz stabs that Nazi in the throat to the promo's upbeat music.

It has the most advanced "rumble" ever.

It connects to your nervous system and can fire simulated, controlled neurons that send signals to your spine to cause your hands to shake themselves, providing the most realistic and metered feedback possible, all with minimal battery usage.

Still not available for pre-order in Australia anywhere :(

Though, I might have to figure out when would be the best time in my project's development process to apply for a dev controller, I guess.

If only it worked for non-steam games, I have so many games not on steam.

You don't even need Steam installed. To my admittedly limited knowledge, this device should work on any computer with a USB input. You won't be able to adjust the bindings, but the controller will default to standard M/KB emulation on boot.

I believe it reflashes its configuration on boot so you don't end up with a broken configuration and so it works without Steam integration.

It works with everything. You only needs Steam to be able to rebind and customise it. You can add anything you want as a "non-steam" game and use it, or you could not use Steam at all and let it act as a combination mouse/keyboard/controller which the machine will detect it as. It isn't even restricted to PCs thanks to that ability - it works with a Dreamcast for example

I'm a couch PC gamer, so I never use a M&KB. I'm curious to see what games this controller ends up making more viable for someone like me.

Im a couch gamer who does use a keyboard and mouse and it sucks a box of cocks. My wrist is going to explode if this controller doesnt get here soon enough.

Are you talking theoretically or has someone actually got a Steam controller running on a Dreamcast for KB/M games?

The coolest thing about the steam controller is how it works on the low level. It's not emulating a keyboard and mouse, it is a keyboard and mouse. As in, it gets recognized as such in it's default legacy mode. When you reconfigure these controllers in Steam and launch the game, there is no translation software going on, nothing driver level, nothing in between the controller and the game. The secret is in a reflashable firmware on the controller - every time you change the config and launch a game, the controller's firmware is flashed with your configuration. That means it's actually remapping the buttons on the controller itself, not in software.

Where this gets really cool is when you take this thing to a non-PC that isn't running steam: it still works. It's literally a keyboard and mouse. I've used my steam controller on a windows 98 PC - played System Shock 2 with it. I've used it on a playstation. I've used it on my mobile phone. I used it on my dreamcast. You can use it on anything that recognizes a keyboard or mouse, because it is a keyboard and mouse.

Very cool stuff.

There is no force feedback/rumble correct?

From the Steam Universe page.

HD haptics

Haptic force actuators on both sides of the controller deliver precise, high-fidelity vibrations measured in microseconds. Feel the spin of a virtual trackball, the click of a scroll wheel, or the shot of a rifle. Every input, from the triggers to the trackpads, can offer haptic feedback to your fingertips, delivering vital, high-bandwidth, tactile feedback about speed, boundaries, thresholds, textures, or actions.

God damn it I want one so bad right now :(. I want to play Into the Stars in bed and the game is mouse and keyboard only. Seriously, I don't care at all that the controller will never be as precise as a mouse. It will make mouse-driven games playable without a mouse and I would gladly pay double the price for that feature alone.

But isn't the haptic feedback limited to your thumbs only? i thought it was for the trackpads, if there's feedback for the other buttons it would be a pleasent surprise to me.

i would like to see this controller in white contrasting with those 2 black track pads. It's great to see someone is doing something with control input besides Nintendo. Great to see Valve's hard R&D turning into something concrete finally.

I really want to get this as soon as it comes out, but I also think that, with a controller like this, it's important to know if the controls become more intuitive after a good amount of use. I get that I probably won't like it to start out, because, primarily, the touchpads are so different than sticks and dpad, but I want to know that it becomes a GREAT control method after you're used to it.

On my mobile phone but was it ever addressed if this will work with the XBOX One when windows 10 comes?

Only if the games support keyboard and mouse input - which they don't - so it won't be supported in game. If you can use a keyboard and mouse else where, it will work (but without the ability to configure it since you can't use Steam)

Apparently it isn't limited to the trackpads. The feedback in the Steam Controller, in theory, should be able to provide a lot more nuanced feedback vs a standard controller. However, for the games without native support to really exploit that, I am not sure what the experience will be like since it will have to mimic what other controllers a programmed for, and I don't know if the haptics in the Steam Controller can offer the same amount of force compared to traditional controllers.

I'm probably in for V2. Preordered the Xbox One Elite controller after E3.

It's not even a competition when it comes to PC use for me. No Xbox pad / analogue sticks are able to allow me to play the myriad of mouse based games I want to play with a controller. Being able to have mouse-like precision in something like MGS GZ / V is an immediate selling point too. I would definitely have been waiting for a gen 2 versions (as I would for most new tech), however this is a product I really need for what I want to do
