Persona Localization interview with Yu Namba

How do you start localization on a game that isn't done?

I remember how last year it was hard to believe in a 2014 release for Guilty Gear Xrd in USA after they announced December date for Japan, finally game was released around only 10 days after jpn version.

This reads more to me like the interviewer fishing for P5 details and Yu politely shutting him down, rather than any comment on the current status of the project.

This is what I got from it too. They've been tight lipped about this game, why would they break their silence for an interview?

Been saying it forever now, P5 will not be released in North America in 2015. We just have not seen enough of the game for it to happen, imo.

Pretty sure they already have the game in their hands based on previous statements. Otherwise they would not be so sure they could localize it in 2015. Also, i'm also quite sure they have had a ton of promotional materials already at Atlus USA, so to have all that and not the actual code for the game itself would be a bit strange don't you think?

I'm pretty sure its just vague phrasing, my guess is they have been doing the localization process along with development for the game.

If that's not true, i'd be really surprised.

Lots of studios start the localization process early in development. It's not like they sit around and do nothing while Japan makes the game.

Yeah I know, I'm just saying that they can't "give priority" to the west and release it over here first before it's actually finished being made.

The footage amount doesn't say anything if you're familiar with the past Persona mainline releases. They've done this all the time.

I'm sure that Japan's just having a tight PR command on Persona 5 and Yu is careful not to piss off any bigger honchos over there by accidentally giving any new details about the game.

Even if they obviously can't mention specifics, I don't see why they wouldn't be able to acknowledge that localization is underway, since the game and release timeframe have been announced.

By not acknowledging it he can politely bypass any questions about it. Once he opens the door that becomes the entire interview. And obviously Atlus doesn't want to talk about it yet.

Well actually, this has been pretty unusual for past Persona mainline releases, as Persona 3 and Persona 4 were both revealed in very long Famitsu Wave trailers.

It is however, ever so more consistent with the spinoffs (Arena, Q, Ultimax, Dancing All Night.) Which had a little bit of info early on, and a large consistent marketing push the weeks before their release.

The writing's been on the wall about Persona 5's localization since PSX IMO.

When, you know, their "big announcement" at PSX is the Captain Obvious "We are localizing Persona 5", and the "E3 Trailer" is the TGS trailer from about 9 months ago.

the E3 trailer was from February

It's not that but the timeline, those came 4 months before the game was out. Before that there was absolutely nothing about the games, not even what we have on P5 now.
If we applied the same timeline and P5 came out in December, the game would not be even announced yet.

And I'm pretty sure they're not doing those long spoiler trailers at all anymore.

If the English version gets released in 2016, there's no way it isn't going to be spoiled for everyone.

What if the Japanese version gets released in 2016? At this point, if we're freaking out about the English version being delayed based on very little information, we could be doing the same for the Japanese version based on very little information.

The point is that both versions have been announced for a 2015 release date for a long while now. That's literally all we have to go on.

Remember P4A region lock?

Remember the Ultimax region free?

I know some people like to bring up the P4A region lock, and for those of you who remember the EU wait I made most of the EU update threads whenever Zen would dribble out some dogshit "it's coming" platitude, but let's be real here: it was a one off.

If Atlus do it again on a region free console, they'll be roasted for it. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that it probably won't happen again.

I'll be in for the US release on day 1, digitally of course.

Why would the EU version take longer than the US version? P4G was english everywhere iirc.
AtlusUSA needs to find a European distributor since they don't publish retail games in Europe. Sometimes (most of the time) those deals are worked out far too late for a simultaneous release. Other times, we do get a simultaneous release (such was with Persona Q).

There's been talk that Square Enix are publishing the EU version, but that might just be an error on Amazon's part. It could just as easily be NISA in Europe. At any rate, I wouldn't be surprised if Atlus has already locked down the EU distributor; it's their biggest game in years and I'm sure the usual suspects would've all been lining up to sell it over here.

Welp, more time for all you fellow Persona fans to make room for Fallout 4! ;)

I'm actually really, really excited about FO4.

And I'll be playing it!

...On my PC!

They've been way too quiet on this game for me to believe it'll be out this year in Japan, let alone in the US.

Oh well. Still getting a PS4 when Shinovi Versus comes out.

I hope not!

If they keep saying 2015, I get the feeling it's probably not in their hands if it slips.

For their record, in Sega's FY report in May, it said this:

“In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, the Group will launch new titles mainly for the Group’s mainstay IP including ‘Persona5‘ which will be the latest title from the Persona series boasting over 6 million total copies sold along with implementing transitions of IP for packaged games such as ‘Total War‘ series into digital games mainly in overseas.”

So they seem relatively sure it will happen before end of March at least. We'll see how that goes.

Hopefully SEGA tell them to sod off with that rubbish.

People keep bringing this up as if Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and Persona 4: Dancing All Night didn't come out.

Between Atlus, Arc System Works, Index and the fears of reverse importing, it's no longer relevant.

Maybe they want to take a "We will be treating this as though we have yet to start" approach when it comes to talking about Persona 5? Didn't they cast for this AGES ago?

The P4A region lock was a one-off. They have released other PlayStation games region free since, including Arena's sequel, Ultimax.

Persona 5 is not going to be region locked.

That's good to hear. I guess with no news we start to think the worst.

Pretty much this. Also, this interview was done back during E3 - first day, I think. Still on track for 2015.
