I wonder how much of the salt over Zero has to do with him being Chilean. I wonder if that is such a thing in the Smash community.
Never seen a mean thing about ZeRo being Chilean.

Just realized this was the first Evo since 2011 where a Japanese player won, and barely at that. European and especially South Asian competitors are something fierce.

Well aside from Socal and Canada cup, it's not looking good for US players to rack up points. Not to mention top Asian players will likely be there too. I hope now that Gustavo has a sponsor they'll send him out to some of these events.

The top US players should still qualify, it's 32 spots after all.

If it was 16 spots though then US would've been in a lot of trouble... currently there isn't a US player in that list until 12th spot.

801 is already in. However, although there are 32 spots, Asia has 7 ranking events left (8 if you count the Singapore tournament, but I'm not sure they're giving out points there), while US has 4 left (5 if you count Costa Rica, but that takes place at same time as a US ranking).

It also depends if the qualified Japanese players take part in the Madcatz tournament as there is no money involved. This could be huge as it could allow another 1 or 2 Japanese players that weren't in the standings to get in. I was sceptical that they would enter at first, but after the massive amount of EVO points given out I can see them going to go up the rankings.

I wonder why 3D FGs fell off? Tekken 3 sold so well.
They used to be at the very top for displaying the most beautiful games and showcasing a consoles visual potential. But that "visual spectacle" is now in the FPS and racing genre along with franchises like Assassin's Creed. Meanwhile, 3D fighters had to maintain 60 fps, which led to compromises in visuals. At least that's part of the reason I think they fell off. A lot of people buy games just because they're pretty and showcase the consoles visual potential.

Also, I would say 3D fighters are a lot harder to make than 2D. Pretty much the only 3D fighters we have now are series that established themselves long ago in the 1990s. Bloody Roar is dead and the only thing close to a new IP we got was Castlevania Judgment (:lol). Meanwhile, 2D fighters have had soooooo many new IPs and I think lower development costs have a part to play in that.

But with that said, I wouldn't call 3D fighters dead. Not even close to it. To my knowledge, every single main canon game released for SoulCalibur, Tekken, Virtual Fighter, or Dead or Alive has sold at minimum over a million copies.

State of the Main 3D Fighting Games

Dead or Alive 5 sold very well on consoles and exceeded Tecmo expectations (to my knowledge). It got an update (Last Round) and made a lot of money from DLC costumes. There's no doubt in my mind that Tecmo is working on Dead or Alive 6 right now.

SoulCalibur 5 also exceeded Namco sales expectations despite the butchered release it got. Lost Swords also must be selling a lot of paid DLC content because Namco keeps updating it with new accecories and costumes. It's already pretty much confirmed they're working on a high profile SoulCalibur title right now.

TTT2 reached 1.7 million sales and fell short of Namcos 2 million expectation. Despite that, it still accounted for a lot in arcade profits and Tekken 7 is currently making Namco a lot of money in arcades. According to Harada, Tekken 7 is making more money in arcades than any previous Tekken title before it. It's probably the reason Namco is very reserved about announcing a console version.

Virtual Fighter is in the gloomiest state but I think it has more to do with Sega than it has to with Virtual Fighter as a franchise. Sega has really ruined a lot of their key franchises (Sonic, Valkyria Chronicles). But they announced publicly that they're looking to regain customer trust so I'm hoping a Virtual Fighter 6 announcement is in the works.

What we really need is a new 3D fighter IP but no one's brave enough to go in that direction. I don't count games like DBZ, Naruto or arena fighters like anarchy reigns in this specific 3D fighting game subgenre that I'm referring to (just to avoid any confusion).

But yeah, 3D fighters generally are still fine and in a healthy state for now but not as popular as they used to be. The gameplay systems we have (in TTT2 for example) are a result of 2 decades of evolution. It would take immense effort to create a gameplay system as deep as TTT2 from scratch. So yeah, that may be another reason their popularity fell off. These games have gotten too deep and complicated.

801 will get in on points, but fighting for seeding is important since only top 8 pays out.

I was actually thinking of going to Milan Games Week for the capcom cup event but with the switch to ps4 i would have to get a new stick and the trip would already cost me quite a bit.
Oh well.

Never mind that i still need to fix the cable in the one i have.

The desperation into defeat in their voices was pricesless. People get salt with Zero I think cause he dominates and tells everybody to get on his level.

Exactly, Smug, Art and KBrad are dangerously close to being out of it.

And now for the question folks ask themselves once a year...

For me, I'm gonna try to play more anime in general and Skullgirls. They had the hypest top 8.

EDIT: Also I really wish the title was Fighting Games Weekly|Frauds Among U.S.
lol

To be honest, the finals really made me want to take a serious shot at getting into Xrd. I bought it on release, but got so side-tracked with work that I'm realizing that it's like 9 fucking months later in the blink of an eye.

I also want to pick up Full Boost again for old times' sake.
What really amazes me is that folks are expecting money from KBR when it's known he doesn't have a steady source of income and hasn't for the entire time he's been traveling. He's been very open about selling stuff he wins and his own personal belongings when necessary. If he promised to pay folks back, he obviously should hash it out but it's bizzare to me to expect something like that from someone that doesn't have the means to.

This is just something that real life taught me when I was in my late teens/early 20s when I'm just getting additional responsibility, driving privileges, etc. If I'm going to take someone like KBR in, where I know he is in a financially unstable position, I'm doing favors out of the goodness of my heart. It is an absolute waste of time to be looking for handouts and paybacks once (or if) someone ever makes it big; usually, you just got to chalk it up as a loss, a learning experience, or a conscious choice. If KBR did promise to pay folks back, that's something he's going to have to parse out on the side.

At the very least, he is definitely conscious of offering gas/food expenses when he has the capability of paying. Too many IRL folks in this situation don't even have that kind of sense even.

I always use this site for the Capcom Pro Tour. Important to note the ranking events that take place on the same weekend as another ranking event as it can prevent international gatekeeping and allow a new player to enter into the top 32.

I'm not familiar, how does the seeding change things?

1st seed vs 32nd seed
2nd seed vs 31st seed
3rd seed vs 30th seed

and so on

Exactly, Smug, Art and KBrad are dangerously close to being out of it.

Just look at Europe though. They have 2 premieres left and Dreamhack Winter does not give out any points. There is money being given out so all the asian killers will go. A European pretty much has to get top 4 and either win or hope whoever places infront of them already has qualified. Europe also only has 4 more ranking events left.

They only have 3 players in the top 32 (Ryan, Luffy, Problem). Valmaster is clearly top 3 in Europe so he can potentially knock off an American from the top 32 standings.

I don't mind her losing pumpkin if she gets something else that's good for neutral like that. Pumpkin is cool until it's useless lol

Characters are losing moves and gaining new ones, yes. Coffin thing is her new one.

It's a shame since I loved pumpkin lol

Heartless!

Pumpkin kind of hovered and floated forward slowly, right?

It's been a while.

What does Coffin do?

Lame that characters are losing moves, but when you add a new move every iteration, I suppose you need to cut back a bit, too.

I heard Daigo marked AiAi as a guy he did not want to fight the most at EVO. Good thing Kappa sent him so we got this match.

Yeah, and Pumpkin would disappear eventually. But you could use wind to make it have a hitbox.
BBCT Pumpkin was amazing. Never disappeared, higher attack level, and it had better durability in going through stuff lol.

Coffin supposedly sends out bats that you can maneuver with wind. It steals health from the opponent.

I think the fact that it's a MCZ tournament would mean that Daigo, Tokido, and Mago are obligated to attend and participate even though their is nothing it it for them. I figure all the other big names like Momochi or Kazunoko will play to even though their is nothing in it for them as well. The bigger question is whether they'll enter that 2nd Japanese Premier Event that still doesn't have a date or a official name(It's just called Japan Premier Event, not sure if it's a placeholder or not).

As far as points are concerned, I don't think they're too concerned about seeding. Just getting in is probably good enough for them and they've done that. They'll continue going to Premier Events that pay out though and be a thorn on the side of unqualified players. And that'll ripple down to B level players who will get pushed out of those 5-16 place finishes that they normally would get until all these internationals started showing up to everything.

Seems like an upgrade, then, but one that can't coexist with Pumpkin or she has too much screen presence.

Damn, Wong got straight up bodied. So many poor decisions like the tags, getting hit on the way down, generally putting himself in harms way. Dunno why he didn't start Wolverine at any point. Storm just can't keep up in the neutral.

Daigo got wrecked by Ai Ai too but it wasn't as intense.
His Storm was keeping up but he made questionable major decisions that cost him games.

He had Doom on a pixel health with his Wolverine and went for the greediest diagonal up Drill Claw to chip I have ever seen in my life. Very uncharacteristic of of Justin in that situation, he is known for his patience.

Only one of those games it felt like ChrisG just out played Justin, the other two matches Justin just threw away the games with bad decisions despite being in advantageous positions.

Tbh I just think there's an environment that 3D fighters can't really break into currently. Either they aren't popular enough (DOA/VF), Have poor support and a casual community way too large(SC/DOA), or is just way too loaded in legacy skill and complexity(Tekken).

2D is often seen as the Default for a number of reasons, each of them somewhat justifiable.

is there a recording of the match though?
damn chris g got way too emotional at the end of the match
ChrisG had mentality given up a while ago. He was in a combo and the dude on the side had to tell ChrisG to be aware of the TAC break LOL!

But man that sadness.... jesus.
