For sure it's the Reichstag in Berlin.

Here is the same Picture in a better Resolution. Above the Entrance you can clearly read: "Dem deutschen Volke". The same sentence is still displayed today above the Entrance.

Joseph Merrick, aka the Elephant Man, 1889. Born in Leicester, England.

Summarized from the wiki: Developing abnormalities as he aged, he was unable to find any employment other than as an exhibit. After being robbed by his own manager and abandoned in Brussels, he made his way back to London and was taken to the hospital. Although incurable, he was allowed to stay in the hospital for the rest of his life. He died in 1890 with the official cause of death being asphyxia, although a Dr. Treves believed he died of a dislocated neck. He believed that Merrick - who had to sleep sitting up because of the weight of his head - had been attempting to sleep lying down, to be like other people.

We still don't know what the cause of his deformities was.

The wiki has more pictures with more of his body shown, but it might be too much for some.

I would love if someone would go in at some point and rebuild. More as a fuck you to the Taliban than anything else.
They try to rebuild it now with the ruined leftovers.
This one has some pretty incredible historical significance. The first x-ray.
I think Röntgen was one of the most philanthropic scientist ever. His rich father supported him very little because his love was from a more poor family. He discovered the x-ray and didn't applied for patent licences, even though he was still an assistant and his wife had to work as well to run the house. He won the first Nobel prize for physics, but donated the money to the Würzburg University.
Most physists of his time ranted heavily because of this.

I sat for a minute between crying and raging out.

This is why there are people that refer to people that look like me as animals. There was a time when their ancestors would come see people that looked like me, in a fucking zoo.

Yeah, it really fucked with with me too. I frequently have to remind myself that not all people view blacks this way, but then I turn on the news. Sigh.

Great thread. Thanks again to all for providing some sort of caption and not simply posting a picture.

This image should have been more prominent back during the height of the last economic downturn. The fact of the matter is, things were not even in the same stratosphere as The Great Depression.

That's not to say it wasn't an issue, just that the comparisons should have never been made.

The photo is from 1948, though.

This must be the first time in GAF history that a thread consistently has captions with posted pictures.

Which means a picture of this thread would fit the concept of the thread.

I went through this whole thread (took me almost 2 hours lol) looking for Mad Jack Churchill, seems I am going to have to fix the fact that he isn't here yet. So, here goes.
It is the guy at the very front with the sword.

They say that he has the last confirmed bow kill (confirmed being the key word here, lads)

I don't know about that group of ladies but women delivered and flew new planes like spitfires during WWII. Interesting to think what everyone was doing during the wars. All hands on deck and if you could do the job, good enough.
My grandfather was in the artillery, and they used to practice by shooting at targets being pulled behind planes flown by women. In order to hit the target, you had to fire when the plane was in the sights.

We've had the first photo ever and the first selfie ever (really, I'm surprised they're not called Cornies)... here's the first photo that includes a person.

You'll notice that the guy at the corner with his foot up has paused long enough for the shutter to capture him without it being a blur.
The guy with his leg up is getting a shine from a bootblack. Since the bootblack is working, he appears as a blurry patch next to the guy's leg.

Man, the look of pure fear on that guy's face is haunting.

Yes, I thought that too. He clearly thinks that this could be the end. The posture of the allied soldier seems non aggressive and relaxed though. I'd say the German soldier was taken prisoner rather than being shot.

Good shout. The man is an absolute goddamn legend.

He survived a mortar shelling that killed everyone else in his squad; he played "Will Ye No Come Back Again?" on the bagpipes when captured by the Germans; he escaped two (?) concentration camps; he took out a machine gun nest with just a claymore sword, a bow, and his bagpipes; he moaned about the A-Bomb because "If it wasn't for those damn Yanks, we could have kept the war going another 10 years!"; and spent his later years surfing in Australia.

His motto was apparently:

"Any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed."

What the fuck? Was this legal back then? I had never heard of this happening.
Of course not, but it was common for parents to sent children away during that period sometimes to relatives, sometimes to forster homes, etc. Orphans had it worse, anyway I'm surprised by this, this picture is pretty well know outside of the USA and at some point it was used in a history textbook here in Mexico (I think 6th grade) anyway the story of the siblings again and more depression era children.
Notice the girl's dresses, they used flour sacks to made them, it was a common practice for many families.

And a nice story, "Migrant Mother" was another famous photo from the depression era, here we can see Florence Thmpson and her daugthers in 1979, they came back and had normal lives, but Florence got cancer and died soon after the 1979 photo, she ended up living of social security unable to pay her medicines and treatment.

sorry, don't intend to derail this thread, but I'm interested in reading more about this and Wikipedia seems to either offer incomplete information or present a more complex picture. Could you link to a good source for a layman? Asking sincerely. thank you.

Presumably the last photo of all members of Disney's Nine Old Men. Probably taken some time before February 1976, when John Lounsbery died. Responsible for many of the most famous Disney cartoons from Snow White until the death of John Lounsbery.

A rare photo of FDR in a wheelchair. The press and the president's aides kept Franklin D. Roosevelt's use of a wheelchair hidden from most of the public during his more than 12 years as the nation's leader. In this image from 1941 he's with his dog Fala and Ruthie Bie, the granddaughter of a gardener who worked for the Roosevelt family.

Last one for me

A Russian WWII tank vet finds the tank that carried him through the war sitting as a monument in a small town.

This one, I really like. Very touching.

You forget to mention that this photo is 3D. If you use the crossed eyes method to combine the two images you can see it in 3D. Very cool!

Weird observation –

men have had facial hair throughout most of history... very few periods where it was the norm to be completely clean-shaven.. I suppose ancient Egypt being one. But really not many others when you think about it, and see the photos.

Right, yea, I actually meant to mention that. I forgot it somewhere along the line, when I was reading about Jesse James. I was trying to find out whether he was actually on display so people could pay to see, as is the case in the magnificent movie from 2007. Couldn't find out any sources for it, though.

I really don't think so
I ain't an expert in facial hair but it really depends on countries, time periods, etc.

edit : well, see above me lol

of course. And there are many areas of the world were men simply don't grow beards. But I'm surprised at how common it was.

Also women shaving armpit and leg hair in the West didn't become the norm until after WWI.
