Ken and Ryu are SF1.

Birdie is as different in this game as he was from SF1 to Alpha, so iunno about that.

For those who haven't seen the roster pic from Capcom's presentation in decent detail yet, I've posted a shot here. Note that this picture is not edited so those coloured boxes the slots are in were put there by Capcom. Nobody knows if they mean anything or what they exactly mean if they do serve a purpose outside of aesthetics but... well... it's hard not to read into it :3
It's pretty easy to look at this and think the groups are World Warriors, returning favourites and new characters.

Blue being returning favourites. Got one from SF1, one from Alpha, I presume the last two would be from SFIII and SFIV. The SFIII one is a toss up, all evidence (statues, hints) considered, but easiest to pin on Alex. Hopefully the SFIV one is Hakan. V-Skill to oil up.

Ken and Ryu are SF1.

I'm assuming the green box is ant characters that appeared in SF2. So far the green box is filled with characters that appeared in SF2. I also think Capcom want this game to appeal to casuals so they want iconic characters for the initial roster. Then they will release highly fan requested characters like Alex as DLC.

To many male characters, also Green likely means returning from 4. Urien is probably a lock from one of the Blue slots but it means either Karin or Alex or not in, which sucks.

I doubt green likely means returning from 4. Because so far every character revealed on green so far are SF2 characters. I think people just say this to be hopeful and are bored if SF2 characters. But in reality I reckon Capcom will announce 3 more SF2 characters. When they do hopefully they get changed up as I don't mind. Bison and Ken are looking great so far.

That's my best guess. I want Karin and Mika, but if we're only getting four characters not from SF4, two Alpha characters and two 3S characters makes sense. Maybe those two will be DLC. I know Gief and Dhalsim are ruined, and maybe I'm just hoping too hard, but I thought two Alpha and 3S characters would make sense with two SF4 characters. I picked Viper for the second choice, but Combofiend seemed to really stress ease-of-execution, so maybe Viper will never get in. Abel had a past with Charlie right? Maybe him?

^ I really can't imagine we'll get Fei Long.

I added a edit into my last post that should answer that :3

Why would green count as SFIV?

Also given the thing Geminosity posted above, I think it's pretty safe just to categorize Birdie as Alpha.

I don't necessarily expect an even split (not really possible it seems with the numbers), but they've been fairly explicit about getting broad representation. Wouldn't be surprised if we get EX reps either, as nobody saw Birdie coming and he's down there as far as characters nobody gave a shit about.

Birdie is not an Alpha character,

Also i never noticed the color thing on the slide. My hype just deflated a bit.
I'm fully aware, but my list isn't counting SF1. I only mentioned 2, 3, & 4 for the green section specifically for that reason.

Because all of the green characters are in SF4 :p

And coincidentally they only announced SF2 characters that appeared on SF4. Lets be real before people get dissapointed that green section is SF2.
By that logic we could say that the blue box is alpha and we're not getting any 3rd strike characters in the initial roster :o

Have there been any theories with respect to the placement of the characters within either boxes?

Looking through various character select screens now and I've got nothing.

And coincidentally they only announced SF2 characters that appeared on SF4. Lets be real before people get dissapointed that green section is SF2.
What does this even mean? Do you know how many SF2 characters appeared in SFIV? I'm not sure what is coincidental about this.

The difference here the blue part only has 2 characters announced so far it's easy to coincidently announce 2 characters thay appeared on Alpha for that section. However for the Green section they already showed 5 characters that appeared from SF2 that can't be just a coincidence.

I think people are hoping that there's at least one SF4 character returning, really.

I will be shocked if there isn't, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are "green box reveals". Maybe there is one SF4 returning *coughJURIcough* and she they are located somewhere in Birdie's neck of the woods.

I like this very much.
Ugh, I hope not. They have enough representation already, get some 3s and 4 characters in there.
Same. 8 characters from SF/2 is a bit too much, considering how many interesting characters there are from Alpha/3/4.

Maybe but you could also argue that we've had 50% of the entire roster revealed (8) and there's still not a single 3rd strike character in there despite 2 alpha reps and a new SFV only character now being present :P

Necalli has Seismos. I don't think we will see Viper. Juri is the SF4 character who is coming back.

I don't see them adding in 3 more SF2 characters, or maybe I just don't want them to. I think the Green will be Juri, Sakura and a SF2 character. Guile or Sim is where I'm leaning. Urien is definitely one of the Blue characters and I'd guess and say the other will be Alex or Karin.

Well i hope your right but I'm going to stick to my prediction as it seems the most logical looking at that picture. It seems a lot of people are blinded by hope.

Ohh damn I forgot about that too :(
That probably would have been her V-skill.

What if the green sections is just non-alpha characters? That plays into the silicon era rumors and would leave the roster looking like:

Ryu
Ken
Chun
Bison
Cammy
Juri
Alex
Urien

Nash
Birdie
R.Mika
Karin

Necalli

I think if the 3 in the green were SF2 character it would mean way to many dudes in the initial roaster. That'd be another 3 dudes, plus at least another male in the blue and 2 more in the Purple though I guess Zen could be a female character too.

That's very much plausible too. Would be odd to distinguish Alpha from the mainline games imo (esp. when it's considered SF0 in Japan), when for the most part they play just as much like SF as the others.

I still think people are looking into the colors too much but my guess is that the initial 16 will be 8 old (i.e they were in SFIV) and 8 new (i.e they were not in SFIV)

Have there been any theories with respect to the placement of the characters within either boxes?
Left side: USF4 vets, Top Right: New, Bottom Right: Non-USF4 vets makes the most sense.

It's unlikely that the box of 8 is all SF2 characters- looking at who's remaining:

Guile- Probably not making the initial cut w/ Charlie there, Defensive charge character
E. Honda- Hyper-defensive charge character
Blanka- Newbie from Brazil strongly suggests no.
Sim- Newbie from India strongly suggests no, hyper-defensive playstyle
Zangief- We already have two grappler/semi-grapplers so far. Could happen though, since he's so iconic.
Balrog- Charge character
Vega- Charge character
Sagat- Defensive character
T. Hawk- Necalli is incredibly similar in moveset and in parts of his sillouette
Fei Long- Name's on the buses in the China stage.
Dee Jay - Charge Character. He's Dee Jay.

The faster SF2/SF3-esque pacing of SFV just makes a ton of these guys a bad fit in this game engine without a pretty sizable rework to their playstyle.

Yeah I think we're definitely being trolled. Didn't the devs say something about giving certain characters (who haven't got much time in the spotlight) a chance to get into the main roster. Guys like Zangief, Dhalsim and Guile who appeared in almost every SF game and crossover to date don't fit that criteria.
Ryu, Chun Li and Ken are pretty much the symbols of the franchise so it's understandable that they're in.

I really am not going with the Ryu/Ken/Chun as SF 2 Rep characters. They are in literally every SF game. I consider them more as SF staples. Even Bison is debatable given how he has become the primary antagonist for the entire series ( Always behind the scenes even in SF1)

Now if Gief/Sim/Blanka show up those would be SF2 character slots. So I can see the roster being something like

Ryu/Ken/Chun

SF2
Bison/Cammy/Gief

SFA
Charlie/Birdie/Karin? (If Uriens the boss)

SF3
Alex/Urien?(Perhaps the Boss)

SF4
Juri

SF5
Necalli/Laura/Rashid/Zen

There's some problems with that list lol. Take a look at the current select screen.

It makes sort of sense if you consider the fact that the confirmed + rumored alpha characters have made very little or no playable appearances outside of an alpha game.

R. Mika has only been in Alpha 3.
Karin's only other game is Fighting Evolution
Charlie's only appearances outside of the Alpha games are the marvel games and cannon spike.
Birdie is only in Alpha 2 and 3.

In fact this would be all of there first appearances in a Street Fighter game since Alpha 3.

I'm hoping and praying that most of these fighters getting posted on people's wish lists do not pop up. They need to pull about 3 more "Birdie?!?!" reveals and I'll be good.

I think Neoxon had a similar theory and roster and I really hope you're both right because it's as close to ideal as I could expect for me right now XD

I actually want this too , they cant really play around much with popular characters people want now like Karin or Alex since people will rage.

But they can take a character nobody really cares about and completely remake them , just like birdie.
