I'll probably pick it up on XB1 but If I didn't have a PC or XB1 as well as my PS4, I would just spend most my time with Fallout anyway.

Yes. Definitely picking this up for my PC within the first month. I really excited to see how the more efficient TressFX fares on PC.

Making this exclusive to Xbox One was such a mistake. SE need more influence over their western subsiduries rather than letting them make a mess like this.

So what is 'early 2016'? May would May 6 months. Will it be less than that?

If it's not delayed, I'd say March at the latest. Didn't TR2013 come out in March? Beyond that it falls into Spring 2016.

I was going to pick it up on X1 in November, but the announcement has changed my plans. PC it is. :-)

Personally, I definitely expected the game to be a six month timed exclusive. It being a year definitely changes my plan for the game. Definitely want to play it but im not going to buy Xbox One again just for one game. I'll now be keeping an eye on the Xbox 360 version and im guessing that with the exception of visuals, it will be exactly the same. Hopefully, it gets reviewed in the 8 range so I can just buy it for Xbox 360 as opposed to waiting a year for the PS4 version.

Business wise, I don't know why SE announced that it's coming to PS4 Holiday 2016 when the Xbox One version is still almost four months away. Makes no sense as they should be milking the exclusivity for at the very least, the rest of the year.

I actually feel somewhat bad for Microsoft who paid so much money for it being timed exclusive so it could go head to head against Uncharted 4 which gets delayed and turns out to be a positive for Microsoft but then turns into a huge negative once Fallout 4 was announced for November 10th. I think that Microsoft would be better off switching Rise of the Tomb Raider with Halo 5. Halo and Fallout are far more popular than Tomb Raider is despite going head to head against Fallout 4, I think that Halo 5 would still sell. Tomb Raider, not so much.

It will be extremely funny if Tomb Raider doesn't sell what Microsoft is expecting it to sell and if PS4 wins November/December or at the very least is close. This should be a lesson for all publishers, if you're going to pay for a game to be exclusive, make sure that it's either A) full exclusive or B) console exclusive. Timed exclusive is just a waste of money for the publisher spending it but not for the publisher receiving it.

"First on Xbox".

See? Is it that hard, Microsoft? No deception, no misleading, no confusion, no backtracking, no discombobulation, no vagueness, no dancing around the issue, no coyness, no smug smirks, no shadiness, no muddling, no annoyance.

I still can't believe how hard they tap-danced around the exclusivity thing for months before all parties involved gave out a muddles "well, um, you never know. It's a timed kind of thing, for sure, but we can't talk about it."

Still, a year's wait is going to really cut into sales, and announcing PC and PS4 versions before the Xbox One version is out is going to cut into those sales too... and it's heading right into a Holiday jam-packed with much bigger, much more hyped, much more exciting titles. Same day as Fallout 4 is insane.
Yeah pretty much all of this, I can't believe how badly this game is being manged, exclusivity alone was BS but now that Uncharted has been pushed back and they announced the date the same as Fallout 4... I just think the game is going to get crushed. Smartest thing they could do is push it back to January but I don't think Microsoft will let them do that. Plus it being cross generation just really puts me off in general and I'm just doubting it will be anywhere near as good as the last one.

So was this a Crystal Dynamics call or what. I'm just curious who was actually in charge of this decision. It couldn't have been the president of Square Enix.

Wow, big delay for PS4. Relieved that PC won't have to wait very long at all.

If they add some decent post-game/new game+ content, I may get it at full price.

I was not corrected at all. I was thrown a bunch of info about Type-O and other shit. FFXIII sold well on 360. Many people tried *very* hard to avoid admitting that. Perhaps you were one of them.

How about a bet? I'd be willing to put down $50 it sells at least a million on XB1.

I always get excited about threads when bets start coming down. Where's Welfare when you need him/her?

Not really. TR is a much more open game than Uncharted has been up to this point. I think that's about to change though with U4. From a gameplay perspective, it looks much more interesting to me than RotTR.

I played both and I don't remember TR being particularly more open than U2/3. Open areas for fights in between platforming bits and narrative choke points. They are definitely in the same genre and are trying to capture the same audience (cinematic TPS fans).

SE are probably aware of this, which is why they sought to make amends with Sony regarding FFVII:R timed exclusivity.

I dunno, but whoever made the call obviously doesn't know anything about Japanese culture. Because if they did they'd know that honour and shame are huge parts of it.

Surprise Surprise.

So it'll be (pulling numbers out of my assumption):

November 10th, 2015 for XB1
February 9th, 2016 on PC
November 15th, 2016 on PS4 alongside XB1's GOTY Edition (lol).

the PS4 version will probably be the GOTY/ultimate edition or whatever. LOL

I'm sure they knew. They set up the deal.

They obviously know about the deal but the fact that it was announced as coming to other platforms is what s/he's referring to. Personally I think SE did it to stir up some buzz/coverage for the game. I'd be interested in knowing preorder numbers for the game because it's not showing in the retailer charts. Games coming out later are higher than it even.

It releasing the same day as Fallout 4 is no cause for concern to be honest. Tomb Raider is a much bigger/well known franchise anyways. At the end of the day though, even I can't compare the releases as it is comparing apples and oranges. Fallout 4 is a multi-platform game releasing on 3 platforms while Rise of the Tomb Raider is a timed-exclusive releasing on the Xbox One on the same day.

Phil got his monies worth. By fall 2016 the game will be old, musty, and spoiled to hell and back.

Which isn't going to be the case. I managed to wait from GTA V's release all the way till it came out on PC and had nothing spoiled for me. It was trivial to do and I'd suspect it will be very much the same for any playstation owners. The only step I took was to not read threads marked "spoiler"

This makes me wonder, are they even going to release this on Xbox One in Japan this year or are they going to wait until Holiday 2016?

Launching PS4 version in November would be suicide especially at full price. My guess it'll launch in December and Feb Seems to early, this is still probably 6 months so April.

November 10th 2015 for XB1
April 21st 2016 for PC
December 8th 2016 for PS4

Point-to-point encounters are pretty similar but outside of fights, TR placed an emphasis on light exploration, with some very light RPG elements to encourage backtracking to previous areas to scour for items. None of this is present in the Uncharted games, which are completely linear. U4 looks to be going in the direction of The Last of Us, where you are given larger areas to play around in and multiple ways to engage the enemy.

But yeah, both games definitely belong in the same genre and are aiming for the same audience. No disagreement there at all.

How is this any more shitty than Sony paying money to keep ffvII off of the Xbox for an undisclosed amount of time? Deals like this really suck and alienate a portion of the audience, no matter what company does it, it's shitty for gamers.

At least Sony didn't act like it was a full exclusive.

I dont think quality has anything to do with it.

Well, there are certainly factors that guarantee that a late port will sell worse than a day one port. Maybe I buy on the other platform by then. Maybe by the time it gets to my platform better stuff has come out. Maybe the allure of it being the new hotness has completely worn off and other and time hasn't been favorable to it post release. There are probably other factors at well that tell you that the audience for potential PS4 buyers is much worse one year later.

However, I think it's also insanely unfair to suggest that nobody wants the game a year later. Why would that be the case? If I like Tomb Raider but don't have a One or a PC, the PS4 release would be my first opportunity to play it. And if the game has been well regarded up to that point, why would I pass on it? Because Square Enix insulted my honor by giving me MS's table scraps? This is an honest question by the way. But I just feel like if I care more about having fun playing video games than being invested in the console wars, I'd still want to play the game if I was ever interested in it to begin with.

I can't say if it's a mistake as a single deal but it looks fucking weird with all their Japanese stuff focusing on PS then this one big deal out of nowhere for Xbox from the west.

Unless there's other western se stuff going Xbox I'm not thinking of. Still it's an odd situation to be in

Except FF7 Remake isn't confirmed for Xbox. Safer to assume PS4 first, PC after, just like SF5.

Was going to wait for ps4 but will likely get for PC with such an early release.

Im new to the pc world but when there are console exclusives that also make it to pc do they typically sell well on pc as a result of the other console not getting it?

It is for casual Tomb Raider fans such as myself. I enjoyed Tomb Raider DE but when it comes out the same day as Fallout...ya, I'm only getting one and it's not Tomb Raider.

Too many games end of this year and next for this to be a big enough deal for me. So waiting for what will no doubt be the "complete" edition on PS4 is easy enough.

PC. Do it.
That was my first thought as well. But I think I'll wait for DF's Face-Off first to see how the framerate is. If it's 30fps on XB1 then lol no way, but if it's ~50 like Definitive Edition then I might get it on XB1 just to play it in the home theater.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. A one-year exclusive window was always going to be the minimum. No company would market a title this much if their exclusivity expired in 6 months.

Come on man. really?

Why would it not be released on the system that's selling the most consoles? Plus it's Tomb Raider, a franchise that has been associated with PlayStation since the first game.

Associated because of a money deal in the 90's to keep it away from other systems.

This is all very true.

I guess as the date get closer we see how this turns out.

Wow, that is a short exclusivity window compared with PC. I am glad that I will be able to play a better version of the game, but disappointed that I wasted money on the Xbone brick.

Yeah. Most people aren't made of money.

$60 is universal. If you only have $60 to spend you are probably going to get the one that appeals to you more and that is going to be Fallout 4 for a large majority of people.

the PS4 version will probably be the GOTY/ultimate edition or whatever. LOL

Hopefully it looks better than the stuff they showed off.

But holiday 2016 on PS4 will likely result in a game that looks absolutely terrible but comparison unless they use that year wisely.

everything about the business decisions behind this game just haven't made a whole lot of sense to me.

Very interested to see the November NPD numbers on this game.

as far as releasing holiday 2016 on PS4 im okay with this as long as its away from Horizon. really enjoyed the last tomb raider game am excited to eventually play this one.

Only explanation I can think of is that this deal was made prior to E3 2013, when everyone was speculating Xbox to lead the market this gen.
