Dragon Quest 11 Announced! [PS4/3DS (simultaneous), NX (tentative)]

Have they ever changed a character from an announcement based on feedback? I think the MC's design is kind of weak. Wonder what Japan thinks about him. Would love to hear their feedback.

I know this is probably wayyyy to early to talk about, but by having the engine in place with DQXI, are the chances good DQXII will see a release this gen on PS4 and maybe NX as well?

If it sells well I don't see why not. It seems SE is really upping their output this gen.

If DQ11 bombs on console, i don't expect another one...Japanese devs have put themselves in pickle focusing on mobile, drawing away the console audience, and then trying to lead them back when the returns arent as great as they anticipated for mobile.

What's your bar in terms of a bomb for this in the west on consoles?

below 150 thousand first month. For consoles in Japan in particular, i'm thinking they will be looking closely at the player base.

On the Japanese blogs, i'm already seeing tons of "not buying cause its not on PS3/Vita", "3DS is better cause its 3DS" ect.

And a whole lot of gloating about NX. It seems all there is these days is fanboy clashes between Nintendo fanboys and Sony fanboys in Japan. A whole lotta "wwww goki" and "wwwww boo-chan"

I'm surprised X and XI aren't coming to PS3, tbh. Heroes 2 and Builders will, so yeah, pretty strange. It seems weird to skip over them JUST so it comes out on PS4 in the west. It seems like there's potential for it backfiring.

3DS version will probably sell a lot more in Japan, but it can still do well on PS4. Also, they have a Playstation version because they want to expand the franchise in the west, where in fact the PS4 version will probably sell more.
Wait, how much did the DS DQIX sell in the west?

Console wars never change.

Heroes and Builders are not Unreal Engine 4.

UE4 can't run on PS3 and they're surely not going to port the 3DS one to PS3.

Also some new Compile Heart games. Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force and Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory II. And the SAO games.

Best fucking time of my life.

This. It's glorious.

Yeh Sony has 3rd Party Productions now for the soul purpose of stuff like localizations and collaborations and such. So no doubt if SE won't do it, TPP will jump in and take care of it. Hell 99% of the responses to YOSP stating on twitter he can't wait to play DQXI on PS4 was people yelling for it to come out west lol. So no doubt it'll happen.

Yup.

Yeah, Dragon Quest VIII is a very demanding game to emulate, along with Rogue Galaxy. Those 2 take beefy machines.

Yeah, they both look great too. I wouldn't mind both getting a remaster someday along with that FFXII.

Aside from the text a lot of the in-game stuff in Rogue Galaxy can look really good.

Sony won't have many chances at getting a heavy hitter to themselves ever again, in Japan. I wouldn't be shocked if it was Sony that openly requested SE to not even consider PS3.

The more I think about it, the more I want (and expect) the PS4 and 3DS versions to be a bit more different than just the presentation, and a bit more on the gameplay side. And I don't mean the combat which will be turn based.

From what we've seen, the PS4 version has a degree of verticality that 3DS doesn't have. This allows for more varied level design in the overworld and in the towns and dungeons. What I'd like to see is Square to use a diiferent approach for each version. Maybe in the dungeon 3DS you'd go left first, but you'd go in a different direction on PS4. You'll have puzzles on both versions, but they can be designed around the platforms they are on. Ultimately by and large the cast, narrative and basic structure of the machanics can be the same. But i'd like to see differences in other aspects as it differentiate's the two copies and gives me a reason to want both. Because if they are literally the same game bar the graphical difference, then I have no reason to care about anything other than the PS4 version, and the opposite will be true for people who get it on 3DS.

Give me little variations in puzzle, dungeon and general layout while keeping the core themes the same. I want a reason to buy both copies!

Well if we look at it like this. Square and/or Sony wanted to push the PS4. Otherwise this game would be 3DS only. Also the console version is more than likely primarily for the West. If that's the case, then PS4 only makes sense as the PS3 version is a waste of time. They'd be better off with Xbox One, PC (and NX). Nevermind the fact UE4 doesn't run on PS3

I'd be in for that. General differences in gameplay and puzzles to make it worthwhile to play both versions. The question is to what extent.

So anyone think they're gonna go the DQ9 route for the game's probable StreetPass feature again?

Cross save compatibility would be neat too if it ends up being the same story

Unreal 4 doesn't have PS3 support and probably too cost prohibitive to make it work themselves.

This may not be the right thread for this, but there seem to be a lot of fans in here, so as someone that hasn't played a Dragon Warrior since IV, (and a half-hearted attempt at 7) where should I try to jump back in?

I'm just worried that with the ambition being so high for both titles, and to make them different as well, that both versions will suffer in quality just from the sheer fact that it would take more time and planning to make all of those things happen.

Like, I have no idea what DQXI PS4 will be. I wanted DQVIII's successor, and it looks to be it here, but the development situation is just weird.

5 for the story and the monsters!

Maybe 3DS/PS4 connectivity? ...lol

In reality, import your save from the 3DS version of DQ11 to get content that would otherwise be locked behind amiibo in the NX version... yay.

It doesn't have to massive. The general layout of a dungeon could be similar but in a different order, with items location varying. A puzzle can just make you think differently. Like it could be "The Wolf travels West as the Owl hoots, while the Snake journey's North as the cricket's chirp." for one version, with different animals and directions in another.

Depends on what type of thing you prefer. I like the narrative and cast focus of DQV and VIII the best. DQIV also offers an interesting change on the usual campaign structure

If DQXI has an actual decent number of party members (thats my biggest gripe with VIII, btw) or a class/job system that would be reason enough for me to get both versions and try 2 wildly different parties as I progress through 'em.

I fully expect different world desigb just looking at the city shown in the PS4 version. 3DS dungeons should follow the classic flat 3D design with a lot of turning the camera around while PS4 dungeons should go more DQ8's way but with some mild platforming

If that happens we're basically getting two new DQ games and thats awesome. Hopefully the 3DS version also makes it overseas.

Wonder how DQX will be managed from now on.

I guess they won't be making any more expansions for the Wii version, maybe not even the WiiU version.

Art direction in the PS4 version is all over the place. Kind of a mess IMHO. Love the look of the 3DS version though.

Not sure how you can tell that from some off-screen images. Looks in-line with the DQ CGI style seen in some of their opening movies.

The DS remakes of IV, V, and VI are a great place to start if you can get them. Move on to VIII and IX if you enjoy the remakes. If you only want to give one of them a shot, I'd suggest VIII to draw you into the series.

Yup. I can't wait to plat these! Getting so excited thinking about it. Been so long since I experienced a proper dungeon in a game. Recent RPG's I've played (and even futureones like FFXV so far) haven't really inspired me in that department. The year and a half wait is going to kill me :(

I'd be surprised if they don't. PS2 was supported for years. And if they are going to drop support for those platforms in the future, they'll announce it well ahead of time.

Maybe I should've used a chalkboard?

Sure, you can, but that chalkboard would look really clean since there's been nothing of note out on PS4. Which is of course the system's fault.

Tbh, I think this was a difficult situation for Nintendo.
I think showing that before their next investors meeting (after Iwata's death) is more important for their future than making believe the WiiU isn't dead. Especially in Japan, to show that the biggest franchise isn't just putting a game on their old handheld, but that they'll still have a hold on it in the future.

We're only on year 3 of the 10 promised for DQX Wii. I doubt it.

I got it, though I don't think a chalkboard would work given the PS4's situation worldwide xD Even in Japan, I don't think anyone is under the impression it will have some miraculous turnaround as much as they're just happy its getting some pretty fantastic support from developers.

Here we go.

I am guessing they wanted that tease.

It's the kind of thing where Iwata would have come out on stage with Horii if not for, you know.

i kind of agree if not for them going back on it later and saying it was a 'possibility,' which makes it sound more like wires got crossed.

like, maybe it was supposed to be that iwata was going to join them on stage at the end as a surprise, and saito knew that it was going to be announced, but the announcement wasn't going to happen after iwata died and somehow he wasn't told.

I wonder if XI will have something like the Dragovian trials from VIII...something extra challenging after you beat the game.Did DQIX had something like that?I played the game but never finished it.

Yeah, but FFXI was a pretty big deal in the west.

I mean, from what I know FFXIV: Heavensward was the last expansion the PS3 is getting, after that its all PS4 & PC
& NX/jk
