Upgrade to Windows 10?

Is this real?

Anybody using this with an nvidia card older than 400 series? My secondary machine (used for streaming in my living room, etc) has a GT 220, and I was having driver issues. I know the "official" Windows 10 drivers only support back to the 400 series. I didn't have time to mess around with it much last night. Anybody have luck with any particular driver with an older card?

My 2550k/GTX970 box is working nicely. Even appears to have helped my framerate in Witcher 3 slightly.

So, I tried to download the ISO via the tool, but I get this error message:

"We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

Anyone else run into this?

"N is made for the EU market and does not include Windows Media Player.
KN is made for the Korean Market and does not include Windows Media Player or an Instant Messenger."

You're in a world of hurt now. I had the same problem and had to increase a system partition :F in size so that the update would work. Before I could do that, I had to allocate new empty space on my ssd and then move my whole :C partition AFTER the new allocated space. This allows you to then increase the size of :F

You cannot do this operation with the built in win7 partition manager, I had to download specific and exotic software to do this.

Now that the message has cleared, it appears the download for win10 is going extremely slow. I am now downloading the ISO through the MS tool, basically nullyfying the whole partition ordeal, rendering it as a waste of time.

This is the worst bullshit MS has every given us

I'm reading online that there is some overly broad rights for Microsoft in the terms and conditions and that Windows 10 basically sends every teeny tiny little thing you do to Microsoft to be stored on their Servers. They can and will under their own suspicion report you to authorities if they think you are doing anything they don't like. Not to break out the tin foil hat cause I'm generally not like that but I was afraid of this... I'm going to sit this initial upgrade out and wait to see what comes of the glaring privacy issues. People expected it to be scaled back a bit for the final product but apparently it hasn't been. :/

Oh I love these sort of rumors and I clearly remember reading how Vista had a purposely opened "backdoor" for Microsoft to spy on you. You got to love all the paranoid concerns every time a new Windows version is released.

It explicitly describes all the data being sent back to MS and if you want it turned on or off during the install process if you go to advanced. Cortana requires access to everything, so I denied that.

Everything seems to be going somewhat smoothly other than the fact that I had to reinstall afterburner. However, I've noticed that my GPU sitting at ~46% power usage. I've set everything to adaptive, but something is still causing my GPU to not idle. Has anyone else noticed this? CPU is idling properly.

I dunno what the fuck is going on but my computer just does not want to install Windows 10. Whether it be Upgrade, USB or ISO, I always get the same result.

Oh....Something happened.

Update this very PC this morning. Really like it so far - even like the new Edge browser.

Tried Xbox One streaming - it's fantastic, I can see that getting lots of use.

Which is exactly why only a fool would click on the Express Installation Button.

guys pls test DS3

Which is exactly why only a fool would click on the Express Installation Button.

I'm even more of a fool because I didn't, but then I thought "well, this early in the software's cycle, getting automatic feedback for every possible bug could really help them out!", and left it activated.

Any way to turn it off once it's already installed?

I have been installing since 12am it is now 9am and its only at 21% copying files 71% is this supposed to take this long? Is it safe to restart?

Is it making any progress? If it is, however slow it might be, I'd wait.

It definitely shouldn't be taking this long though.

FACK! Its been a whole night and nothing! I only get the Notify me when Im ready option and wait for the wave! I want to update now. Everyone on facebook has already updated but not me!

GAF!

I am building a PC as we speak!

I picked up 8.1 with the intention of eventually upgrading, but I do fear day-1 bugs and such. And I am worried that applications I might deem nesc are not working correctly on 10....WHAT TO DO.

You can deny them access to the 'advertiser ID' stuff completely. There's a toggle for pretty much everything. It wouldn't be hard for a group to sue if they did end up using your information, given how they offer so many ways to turn that off.

How to force the update:

1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder, but not the folder itself.

2. Now, run a command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" with no quotes.

3. Wait a minute, and watch the folder you just emptied. It should start to have files show up.

4. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start downloading. Once that is completed, you will be prompted to begin the installation process*

*may not work in territories where W10 is not released

Hope that helps

Windows 10 upgraded pretty nicely. Had to manually reboot after it copied all the files but the installation went alright afterwards.

Problem is I can't seem to get the Minecraft Windows 10 beta working. I bought and installed the app but when trying to run it the window opens then closes immediately.

Anyone have any ideas?

Create a USB bootable version of the ISO MS have provided for WIn 10. When you boot the USB, you will come a point where you can do a custom install. Here you can formal the drive and install to it.

You MUST upgrade first to transfer the old license to WIn 10. Only then should you format and install vis USB. The installer will ask you for a serial key atleast twice, each time skip. You should end up at the desktop activated as long as you had upgraded prior to clean install.

If you first upgrade and then choose to clean install, as im planning mobo change. At what point does it ask for the key? Ive read about signing into your ms account but for win 8.1 pro ive only ever used a local account profile. So im guessing you just input your win 8 key?

I've had more time to mess around with Windows 10. It's running great on my HP Stream, and the option to switch from desktop to touch is really awesome. I also upgraded my Windows 7 work desktop, with hardware from 2008 and it's running great. I'm really impressed with this OS so far. I'll be upgrading two home desktops from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 later today.

Well, so I´ve downloaded the Windows Media Creation Tool, clicked the option to "Upgrade the system" , downloaded fine. Now after the preparations it says:

"Choose what you want to keep"

And it shows 3 options, but the first one (which is the one I want, since it will keep all my apps and personal files is greyed out. I don´t know why. I definitely dont want to reinstall ALL my programs.

What version of windows are you upgrading from? Some are limited.

Upgrading is a bad idea from my experience (only do it to transfer the license), you got to fresh install afterwards. The upgrade leaves the system buggy and slow.

Windows 10 option. Then when it asks choose the Pro edition.
This is false info. Upgrading is perfectly fine nowadays

Installed last night when it booted up it was at 1024x768 and wouldn't let me go higher. Downloaded the newest nvidia drivers and got an error that new found hardware is open. I dunno what to do.

To get the Win10 license for your PC configuration you need to do an upgrade of an activated copy of Win7 or Win8. After that you may format the drive and install Win10 from scratch - it will be activated automatically by the activation system based on the key stored for your hardware configuration from the upgrade.

I have heard that the key is stored in your MS account several times but I don't think that this is correct. The key is stored in the activation service for your specific h/w configuration.

What happens if i want to upgrade my hardware in the future? Does the key then come from my account?

Well my update is done, and I gotta say - It kept everything from before and my laptop is considerably faster. I'm satisfied, yet to try any games but we'll see!

still no notification to install and after restarting last night the part of Windows Update that was saying it would notify when Windows 10 was ready has disappeared...awesome

Had an update for my preview version earlier today. Was the fastest update I've got for Windows 10 so far.

What's the latest version we're at now so I can double check.

So if I upgrade once using the windows update, then clean install with an iso, does my windows 8.1 key work to activate windows 10?

It ties the key to your Microsoft account when you first do the update. So you just skip the cd key stuff during the install and log in, then it activates.
