Upgrade to Windows 10?

Didn't quite know whether to post this here or in the off-topic Win 10 thread, so apologies if this is in the wrong section/thread.

Have upgraded and made a clean install of Win 10 on my laptop and now wanted to download the latest firmware for my processor and graphics card...

Found this for my AMD Radeon: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/mobile?os=Windows+10+-+64

But having a real hard time finding the latest driver on Intel's site, my processor is a 3rd gen i7-3720QM. Does anyone know the latest drivers for it and it's HD Graphics 4000 graphics processor?
On mobile so can't do a comprehensive answer.
Google "Intel Download Center", then look for Graphics Drivers, HD Graphics 4000, and download the Windows 10 driver.

Alternatively see if Windows Update will do the install for you

anyone having issues with BF4 and punkbuster? ive deleted and reinstalled it a number of times still getting kicked from servers

I think the issues are overblown. 70 million people have installed the OS, of course there are some issues. And the "I've never had these issues before" antidote doesn't really hold water, because there hasn't been a piece of software ever made that didn't have tons of people having issues. Which magical OS do you use that doesn't have an entire forum dedicated to people who are having issues?
My claim of never having had issues like these before with any OS, including Windows is sbsolutely watertight as I simply haven't had issues like this before.

You're replying to things that I just haven't said. At no point have I suggested that nobody has ever had any issues with other operating systems as you claim and I have not suggested that this is happening to everybody who has upgraded to Windows 10. You only have to quickly scan through this thread to see that many people are happy with the upgrade and how it's been handled and there would be something wrong with me to claim that they were not being honest about this.

My god, I'm having more issues with this thread than I am with installing Windows 10. I've never, ever had any issues with any other thread and every single person in this thread is also having issues with it...apparently.

I need permission to add files to my C: drive? I added myself to the security list of C:\ but I am still prompted when moving files to Program Files and Program Files (x86). UAC is off as well.

What's up with all the privacy concerns? I laugh when I see posts about it. Got news for you, if you got an Android phone, ios etc. Google and Apple know a lot of you lol. Most of those privacy settings in Win 10 are akin to those mobile OSs. If you don't like them just turn them off in their setting but don't act like is a "wooo huge security issue" "M$oft is spying on us" hahaha.

Those are system protected locations. That is why. You need to take ownership of the folders for that. A bit of an overkill, since you should never have to put any files there. Only software installations.

I upgraded today and so far I am impressed. I actually thought Windows 8.1 was pretty good, albeit somewhat clunky, but this is a definite improvement. I had no issues whatsoever during the install process, nor did I have any issues after installing it. The UI is similar to 8.1 but the start menu is an actual start menu now, and everything is much more coherent and organised.

The first game I tried was Minecraft Win10 edition. Now I did have an issue there in the form of absent sound, however switching audio drivers fixed that issue. Win10 Edition runs a hell of a lot better than the original PC version, though it's still a bit rough around the edges. I'm hoping it will get mod support too.

The Xbox Live intergration is great, everything from my account was there from chievos to my avatar. I could not try the XB1 game streaming as I do not own an Xbox One, however I've been hearing that it's great.

Overall, I'm very happy with it, it's definitely worth upgrading to.

I'm bummed since I'm pretty sure that the Game DVR for now is useless for me. The Game Bar doesn't pop when the game is being played in Full Screen Mode on any of the games I am currently playing. :/

Had the same "issue" just letting it sit for ~8 minutes fixed it. Probably did some shit in the background and forgot to update the screen.

It was stuck for a couple of hours so I bounced the machine (yes I like to play with fire) and then Windows reverted back to 8.1 and an error popped up saying "The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during SYSPREP operation. Error Code: 0xC1900101 - 0x30018" Upon some research, it seemed like my anti-virus software (Kaspersky) was not allowing the upgrade to progress after 32%. So I uninstalled my anti-virus and now I am at 71% installed.

I just wanted to post a follow-up in case anyone else was having this issue. Happy upgrading!

I'm sure you've probably seen it but it seems like a potential reason is third-party apps installing shell extensions into Windows Explorer. Have you recently installed a media player or text editor or something that adds to the menu when you right-click a file? In the meantime a potential fix (probably until you restart your PC) might be to restart Windows Explorer using the task manager.

I'm thinking it's a shell extension now but I'm not sure which one. I used a program and disabled anything that wasn't by MIcrosoft but the problem still persists.

I've also discovered something else. When I right click on a shortcut and click open in the context menu it won't open. Double clicking works fine though. This only applies to shortcuts. If I right click on the target file and select open it will work. Very odd.

Thanks for these reassuring replies.
I might go ahead and upgrade now.

Is it possible to downgrade to Windows 7, if I regret and do a clean install?

yes, I believe there are some options to roll back to previos versions of windows, I saw it somewhere when playing around with it.

i can't seem to get anything Nvidia related to install. once the installation starts, it immediately gives me this error:

any ideas?

Restart fixed it for me.

Thanks for the reply, I had a look but still can't figure out which are mobile CPU drivers and which are the desktop versions, tried downloading the only Win 10 driver on the site and that seemed to be only for never chipsets as it didn't detect my CPU.

I do wonder if Windows has automatically installed drivers for it as it seems to be working so far, just don't know if they are the latest up to date drivers? You would think this stuff would be a bit more clearer and straightforward these days, it seems as soon as your product isn't the latest on sale item all support gets buried under a ton of trash.

  • PC running really slow
  • Takes about 5 to 6 minutes to restart
  • Unzipping a 530 meg zip file using WinRAR is taking about 20 damn minutes.
  • I can't install my legit Office 2010 and had to downgrade to 2007 because it keep telling me it was a corporate edition even though its not.

Hopefully they fix all this because I never went though this problem when I upgrade from Windows XP to 7.

I need help

I haven't had any issues so far. Never thought an upgrade would be smooth like this!

I only have two annoyances so far; the all-white windows and the fact that I can't have normal shortcuts in the Start-menu like used to.

I mean, why have all this empty space? It's a perfect space for the apps I want to use often.

I have this same exact problem, I for the love of god cannot figure out how to pin to the left side.

Didn't have any problems updating my Asus Laptop otherwise, pretty smooth transition.

You can't manually pin to the left, only to the right. The left will automatically populate once you start using programs frequently. If you don't like the unused space you can always disable it under Start > Personalisation > Start.

Never mind. Disabling it doesn't remove the space.

You probably have the high disk usage problem. Check task manager and see if anything is using excessive resources.

For me, the Intel Graphics driver that Windows 10 automatically installed is newer than the driver on Intel's website. It's probably the same for you, so I wouldn't worry about it.

How long is the roll out supposed to be over? Neither of my computers want to update yet. "Notify me when ready". I really don't want to mess with stuff to force the update.

Well shit, I upgraded anyway thinking I could just use a 360 controller until the new version of WiinUSoft releases, but I won't need to. The version I had installed works just fine.

On top of that, Windows 10 actually fixed an issue I was having in 7 where I couldn't play games in 4K @ 60Hz anymore after my TV's latest firmware update. In fact, I haven't really had a problem arise yet on either machine I've upgraded, so I'm impressed. This is after I spent some time this afternoon disabling all the data-mining shit MS put into the OS--fuck that shit.

Hope DS4Windows updates soon to fix the Hide DS4 issue, but that's the only problem I'm wanting fixed atm.

I'm having an issue with being able to change and save program .ini files. I've disabled (UAC) so I would stop getting the pop ups when installing programs and I'm the only account set to administrator and don't know what to do. It also won't let game settings stick, they revert back after relaunching the game. Help anyone??

Edit: FIXED, I had to enable (UAC) and then disable it followed by a system restart. Then i just had to go back to where the .ini file is at and windows would ask me If i wanted permission to edit any files in that folder.

You can't pin to the left side, also there is not much customization for the bottom left area either. Main reason why I decided to use third party start menu.

well, now i'm having an issue with left 4 dead 2 on steam. it was working fine for a few days, then randomly during a game restart it crashed now as soon as the game loads after the intro posters it just crashes to desktop with no error messages or anything...

Thanks for that. Have now upgraded from Vista to 7 and will go from 7 to 10 at some point tomorrow.

I don't normally go anywhere near a new Windows version until the first Service Pack is available but have decided to go for 10 now just in case they decide to stop it being free later on.

Glad they've gone back to a Start button again with 10. That's the main reason why I've stuck with Vista for all this time. Well, that plus my Vista is 'legit'. Someone in one of the main UK retail stores (might have been Dixons) leaked the DVD that they used to install their OEM version of pre installed Windows for their PCs lol.

Just install it without entering a serial and Bob's your Uncle, a legit copy of Vista that passes all checks and updates without a problem.

Wow, I just did a horrible mistake and there was no way to go back.
If someone asks you to sign into MS Store, tell them to take a hike.

So I signed into MS Store on my Mom laptop, and it synced and created a user profile under my MS login name. I signed out...but now her account had a MS Account Sign In, I reverted it back but now her login local name is Standard User.

So after searching the web for this, I gave up after 15mins and deleted this Standard User account....Thanks goodness she only uses it for Word/Excel.

So this is my problem:
1) You can't delete your MS login name, you can change it back to local but it will always be under your MS account

2) I have to go back to my Admin local account, and delete her changed Standard User account.

Have you guys encountered this problem with an easier method to fix this bullshit MS padding fake accounts login system?
I couldn't handle the BS and destroyed the Standard User account....
Fucking MS...They setup this system to sell and collect more ads.

I'll have a new PC next week that will have a clean install of Windows 8 on it. If I upgrade to Windows 10 immediately, is it basically going to be the same as a clean install?

Jumped in with main gaming rig - only issue is my DS4 doesn't work unless you disable the Network List service (which breaks start menu type-to-search feature). Seems to be fine otherwise.

Does it only break the start menu-to-web search, or even the search your own files function?

i cant install team speak. ive tried running in compatibility mode and running as admin. i get a "File system Error (-1073741819)"

This is not a Windows 10 issue but I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this problem

I have USB headphones that are treated as a different device by the PC. If I start playing a game when the headphones are plugged in and then disconnect them mid game, the volume mixer switches back to speakers, but the speakers don't know I have a game open and will not play the sound

Is there a way to overcome this? Maybe force it to re-scan for new applications?

Not really. This is probably a game-by-game issue, since there's probably some that handle dynamically re-binding the audio device properly. But most probably don't.

Verify game cache. Sounds a lot like a file got corrupted when it crashed.

How did you get small icons in the start menu?

Right click the tile > resize > small.

It is highly subjective. It might be fast on the particular websites you visit, but generally Chrome still beats it in most synthetic tests.

*shrugs* I am a Firefox guy and never cared for Chrome. But is Edge is just fantastic so far no matter where I go. I love it.

I really like Edge but sometimes became really choppy and I don't know why. With choppy I mean slow, with a strange delay that affect scrolling and click.

Btw, i really like this new Os. Congratulation Microsoft. The update was fast and reliable beside some driver issue with my Nvidia and my Asus motherboard that I resolved quickly
