I kind of have to laugh.

I've been saying this game was mid 2017 at the earliest since it comepletely skipped E3 2014 and all the info had nothing set in stone. And with Duscae I literally felt like "This is basically all they've made so far".

And people always argued with me. Since things "turned around" so much

I feel good about my holiday 2017 prediction from like a year ago.

And now the new one is Kingdom Hearts 3. Lol. Some are even saying KH3 is 2016.

I think I'm right about KH3 being 2018 too. Depite Unreal.

Maybe early 2017. Much like all of these console games coming from SE, FF7:R, KH3, Nier 2, etc.

I bet you none of these games had much of a budget / active staff until 2013 when Yoichi Wada stepped down. I'm pretty sure this all is due to Wada who focused heavy on mobile and handheld over the last 5+ years. Then the new CEO came in, and jump started the console development again.

So when you think about when development started for most of these games, think 2013-14 and later. So 2017 is a decent development time, 3-4 years.
Lol you have your timeline wrong. The mobile push by SE came shortly after Wada left, which means he delayed starting work on mobile until he really didn't have a choice. There's a reason why he gunned for Luminous Engine even after the failure of Crystal Tools and why after he left his CEO position, he's working on cloud computing for HD tech rather than for mobile tech. Guy's not interested in mobile games.

The answer to why, hypothetically, "none of these games had much of a budget / active staff until 2013" is pretty simple. What released August 2013? (Hint: You're playing it.)

However, I think it's more likely that FF15 actually had a hefty staff by 2013, since Toriyama's team certainly wasn't loaded while they were working on 13-2 and LR. Wada probably got Nier 2 going as a last project before leaving (can you imagine still giving those guys projects after Nier and Drakengard 3 sales? only if you really like them for some reason). If there's additional personnel in 2013, they were probably staffing KH3.

ATR summary:

  • We redesigned Regis.
  • Airships? No clue, maybe as DLC.
  • We're nowhere near done.
  • We can't announce a release window, even if we do have one.
  • Important questions about black bars and cosplay.
  • The prologue of the game has changed!
  • Luna is a strong female character even though nothing we've shown supports that.
  • The girl with black hairs? We haven't named her yet.
  • Main baddie? Who knows.
  • Stay tuned for PAX when we'll show the same trailer.
  • Feedback forum! Not ready yet.
Thanks for this. Why even brother coming to show us nothing?

Guys, you will be happier when you just think of FFXV being in development since 2013.

Everything before it was just a small team working on art design, CG, and playing around with a new engine. Think of it as a tech demo before then.

So they are making decent progress for a game that's only been in development for 2 years.

What? No they aren't. The dates for "full production" keep moving forward with this game, rofl.

I'm talking about when the Malboro came out. Look at it again, the framerate drops to single digits

Even after it comes out and they are fighting it, it looks around 20fps maybe lower.

The slow-mo effect with all the motion blur? That happens in the demo too. It doesn't look 10fps.

When they say they haven't named the black haired chick, I hope they mean they haven't announced her. Same for the coyness around airships and such.

Seriously, otherwise the one true takeaway is they really aren't near completion.

TGS better deliver in the areas people want and expect.

Since 2014, since they are basically scrapping everything Nomura did until that point.

Well, i'll my joking and negativity aside...

I'm fine with it taking a long time. I hope it takes as long as it needs to. I just hope the end result from all of this nonsense is a coherent and polished game to restore the FF brand to where it needs to be.

If that means releasing in 2017-2018, I'm fine with that.

It started with FF12.

What did he sacrifice? He took over someone else's project and still can't complete it in a short time, unlike the crew that completed FF12. He had the ambition to gun for the job, then he should be able to take the blame for it.
FFXII and FFXV are not comparable. FFXII's director left and someone else just took over and finished whatever was already being done. FFXV was moved to PS4 & Xbone and rebooted in 2012. In addition, FFXV is a far bigger & more ambitious game than FFXII, so it's not like you can develop a PS4 level RPG of its scope in 3 years.

You'd think at the very least they'd have a script and a roadmap for game progression written and done.

Persona 5 is coming out in the next few months and weve seen a few seconds of gameplay and have no release date.

Persona 5 was already delayed once. Also it's the situations feel a bit different. Atlus is purposefully holding back info, with FFXV it feels like they can't show it due to the state it's in.

I kind of have to laugh.

doubt it. KH seems to be having little to no development problems. We are seeing it multiple times this year supposedly. I think this month.

Nice spinning there.

It actually is:

  • Airships? We can already have bird-view based ship, still working on full-fledged and full scale navigation. Might add as DLC, but we definitely want controllable airships in the game.

But i'm sure you're just enjoying complaining about the game without concrete facts so please go on.

This comes off as a nitpick defense

The core issue stands regardless of individual details

This game is clearly still very far away assuming they get a cohesive plan and development on track

Its crazy because weren't there several interviews stating that the game was reaching a very solid and stable development pace towards the finish line like last year?

Did the Duscae experiment just throw a monkey wrench into everything or what?

There's no need to spin anything when you have such a luckluster showing frankly, and it wasn't my intention to do so. I edited the list to better reflect the state of things.

Also the list was meant more as joke than as a seerious recollection of what happened.

Good thing i don't have any hype since they changed it to FF15,i'll still buy it day one but i'm doubting that Square will release on fall 2016 for Japan.

Tabata seems lost. Maybe they threw him on too large of a project too soon?

I think so, this ATR was just garbage. They replied to the question regarding the black haired girl just to say that they can't say anything about her yet.

And honestly I think they are asking for too much feedback, just do the game you want to make and don't listen to fans too much, XIII-2 was garbage because of too much feedback and Toriyama even admitted it in some interview (can't find it atm).

I'd like to quote Henry Ford:
If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.

As the saying goes:
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Atlus has its doubters (including me), but at least they haven't done anything to truly give any weight to those doubts. FF XV is doing just that though: lending weight to the doubters

Umm are we looking at the same thing??? That's not slow mo... that's dropping frames...

Slow mo would look smooth, not jittery.

Anyway, not going to have an fps discussion, if it doesn't bother you, it doesn't bother you.

Kind of.

It was a very bad showing, like really bad, but this only speaks badly of their marketing/PR skills to me, not of the quality of the game itself. Like, everyone is screaming "omg ridiculous" "dis games doomed" "bound to sux" only because they're bad at promoting it.
I know it still is a valid complaint (you can rightly say its their fault for showing shit), but this is hardly more than judging a book by its cover, or a movie based on a badly cut trailer.
Like, they just began promoting the story and you really expect them to answer questions about villains and such? C'mon.

Only pros are narrating the story's intro via artworks (that was a nice touch imho, it tells it without spoiling game's cutscenes), the new area shown, and the fact that we're getting 2 new ATRs in the span of a little more than a month.

That's how I'm choosing to look at the situation.

um i dont think so i can see kingdom hearts 3 come out next year if they were on the same engine as ff15 then i can say 2018 but now they on unreal and thing are going smothly then ff15 2016 for kh3 is not far off

Final Fantasy XV (formerly known as Versus XIII) was announced 3,376 days ago.

Timespan between the release of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy VII = 3,332 days.

Can we just point out that Nomura and various other SE talent in the HD space havent fared much better?

Because of poor upper-management decisions and complex engines creating apparent production stunting hurdle, if we are simply speaking of the HD space.

The reason I trust the combo of Nomura and Kitase more is due to previous results. Kitase knows how to handle large budget, AAA productions. In the fucking mess that was last gen for S-E, under Kitase's watch three FFs were created & released for home consoles, plus impressive remasters for FFX and FFX-2. Sure, overall opinions on the XIII Trilogy will vary, but that doesn't change the fact that they got over the initial hurdle of White Engine/Crystal Tools, got FFXIII out the door 3 and a half years after its concept trailer was revealed, and supplied two sequels in reasonable time periods.

Those are results in my book.

I get the feeling that Tabata wants to make Type-1 instead and actually has no interest in XV as it was announced which is why he keeps changing stuff.

Nowhere near done? Maybe think twice before releasing a trailer that ends with "almost there, just a little longer"!!! Maybe if you guys spent less time redesigning already perfected characters like Regis we could get this game sometime this decade!

I can't believe they still haven't named some of the main characters in the game. Christ! How can a humongous RPG like Witcher 3 be released in a timely manner and yet Square can't launch a game they started working on in 2006?

What a load of bullshit.

Look at release dates again, huge push starts in 2012.

Also remember, even though mobile games are small and development light, they still have development windows. Maybe some of them take up to a year or a bit longer. So you have to look at a release date then consider the development window.

There was barely any console releases (excluding the "Eidos" side) during Wada's time. Now he's gone and all of these games get announced for consoles 2-years later which is an effective development window. So maybe it was Wada focusing on their engines that was the issue.

Airship as dlc strikes me as really weird.
In previous games acquiring an airship was a gamechanger. It allowed you to explore regions you couldn't access before, it opened up the game's world to you, you couldn't finish the game without it.
If it's dlc it will be a complete afterthought with no bearing to the actual storyline and unless they purposefully make certain areas unaccessable it wont change anything besides allowing you to get around faster.

They also stated that they were continuing work on a new playable demo for people, the same one they announced at TGS.

Isnt mass effect 4 releasing in the same time
Frame? And they havent shown anything about that yet. #positivity2015 brehs.

Mass Effect 4 hasn't had 9 years of history and development behind it. In fact they got Mass Effect 1,2,3 out before this game was even changed to FFXV.

Good points man

If I was SE, I would do a surprise ATR for damage control...but then again, they would show more concept art.

I mean... I'm so baffled of why they even showed anything. This is far beyond disappointing. Even embarrassing isn't the right word.

It's the same slow-mo effect everytime Noctis gets knocked out as the demo. I agree framerate needs improvement, but it doesn't look as low as 10fps.

I really enjoyed the XV demo, and I hope the full game delivers.
