Upgrade to Windows 10?

Damn I can't install cumulative update KB3081424 and it seems that there's a lot of people with this issue....

Workaround or solution: Deleting some obsolete entries on the registry or manually install the update... or wait for MS to fix it....

See reading stuff like this bums me out.

How is it that Microsoft, despite having a FAST and SLOW ring of Windows Insiders of many different hardware configurations who get this update first after internal testing, can release butchered updates for public use?

I thought all along through the Windows Insider program, there was a tiered list of thorough testing before a normal guy like me gets an update from MS

Upgraded my desktop to Windows 10 from 8.1. Seems to have done so flawlessly without any noticeable problems or oddities. Not going to do a clean install just yet. Good job, Microsoft!

Good upgrade.

Window 10 Home Premium

My windows partition is almost exclusively used for gaming.

Shadow of Mordor
Star Citizen-Arena Commander
Crysis 2
Crysis 3
Rocket League
Shift 2
Pinball FX
Mass Effect 2

All work perfectly. The only exception was Freespace 2 Open, which is a much older title.

I like this more than Windows 7, but not enough to wipe my EOS partition. Good OS so far though.

Keep getting error code 0xC1900101-0x4000D on my HP Pavilion m6-1035dx after it gets to around 75-82% with the windows 10 update process. Anyone else have this issue?
Same, but mine resets to Windows 7 at 32%. A Microsoft faq suggested uninstalling my antivirus software but that didn't help anything. No idea what's happening.

Maybe I'm imagining things, but ever since I upgraded to Windows 10 my music has sounded like absolute shit; it's muffled, the bass is too high, and it seems scratchier than it used to be.

Is this happening to anyone else? I tried looking it up online and I'm getting results for Windows 7 and 8 upgrades affecting sound, and I tried uninstalling then reinstalling the audio driver with no luck.

So is the "second phase" error just for upgrade installations? I don't want to have the same problem with a clean install...

I think ive run into a single problem with this upgrade and thats getting my PC to act as a media server for my PS4. I really dont want to jump out and blame Windows 10 and it's likely I screwed something up somewhere.

Yep, I can turn up my music when I die in CS without tabbing out. Not revolutionary but it's nice.

Yeah it's more why wasn't it already like that than Microsoft innovating. Guess we've got the tablet crossover to thank for it.
Very positive upgrade all in from my perspective.

Probably Dolby Home Theater or something similar. Disable it and everything will be fine.

I need to figure out how to run the Compatibility App manually on my mom's PC. It's ridiculous there's no option to, and the last time it checked was 3 days ago. I had to buy a cheap-o GPU to make it compatible, and the clock is ticking if I have to return it.

EDIT: Finally got it

Hey guys,

I did a clean install of Win10. I have used the media creation tool to make a 64bit Win10 Pro.

Installed it and see that I have 32bit Win10 Home. What the hell? Did it install a wrong version for anybody here?

it's a driver issue, roll back to 353.30, make ur custom resolutions and save them, then update to the latest driver, it will keep the resolutions, they will work, but u wont be able to add new ones after you update.
i am also having problems with gedosato, the resolutions are detected ingame, but some games gives u the option to only change resolution through launcher, and it just doesn't work, resolutions wont appear on launcher, but ingame they will.

They don't appear in-game for me using the latest drivers. In the customize window, it says "Click Create Custom Resolution to add items" using the latest drivres, but in 353.30, my custom resolutions appear.

I updated my dads Laptop and there are no Wireless drivers now. I identified the required drivers and installed them, but it still doesn't work.

What should I do now, other than going back to Windows 7? Please help. :(

Edit: Reverted back...

Think I am going to take the leap sometime today...

What do you guys recommend in terms of driver upgrades to make sure it is a smooth transition before I take the leap?

Did a Disk Cleanup to remove my Windows 8.1 install. No turning back now, whoo.

What wifi card? Did you use the driver on the laptop manufacturer's website?

Just in case, download the latest wifi/ethernet drivers from your computer manufacturer's site. If you built your own PC, then download from the wifi/ethernet manufacturer's site.
Windows 10 should handle all the other drivers.

It's a Laptop with an integrated Intel wifi chip. I used the drivers from the manufactures support page and I downloaded the latest version and previous ones from Intel. They didn't do anything and Diagnosis Test always gave me an incompatible error.

yeah that's pretty odd imo. Out of curiosity what laptop model/manufacturer?
In any case, unless you have time to fiddle around (e.g. connect laptop to ethernet, update driver through windows update), there's no harm in waiting another month until the issue gets resolved.

Was just coming on here to ask how long I should be waiting for the first reboot... But it's chugging along nicely now. Win 10 t minus 97%and counting.

Windows 10 is great so far.

Edge is a GREAT browser - never thought I'd use anything other than Chrome for a while.

On that note, does Edge have AdBlock?

Other features of Win 10 are awesome - it is so fast and booting w/ an SSD takes 2 seconds.

Definitely recommend upgrading to Win 10.

Acer Aspire 5920 and it was connected with an Ethernet cable. Here's what I tried:

- Tried to update via Device Manager. Error in the process.
- Downloaded and installed (like mentioned) several drivers manually.
- Deinstalled the drivers via the Device Manager and ran an Intel Tool for finding missing drivers. Didn't find anything.

But like you said... I'll just wait.

Edge has no plugin/extension support the way Firefox and Chrome do. At least, not yet.

Well that was incredibly painless. Everything is just how I left it from windows 8.1 and everything is working right away without issue. Easiest time I've had upgrading an OS ever. Now to play around with it for awhile.

(edit) Noooo my DS3 doesn't work anymore. Curse my hubris! Now I'll have to spend minutes of my life trouble shooting it.

Looks like only wireless isn't working with my DS3 for right now, not a huge deal... I'll mess around with that later to try and fix it.

For anyone who switches between their desktop monitor and their big TV when using Steam Big Picture mode, have you figured out the easiest method to switching the video and audio while using Windows 10?

Previously I would use an autohotkey script made by a GAF user that automatically switches the input on both the video and audio to my TV and home theater while shutting off my desktop monitor. I had all this mapped to a controller button press, making it an ideal boot up for Steam BPM.

Since Windows 10 the script only works halfway. I get a message that says that "SSD.exe is only compatible with Windows 7". I also get some weird resizing issues with certain programs like Kodi, so this script needs some adjustments or I have to use some other method.

This happened to me, in the media creation tool there is drop down menu where you have to select 64bit pro before creating the installation.

I'm not seeing much difference in start up times compared to 8.1 and I don't see any reason to use Edge instead of Chrome/Firefox.

The new Start menu is killing me though. It's like not the Start menu at all and it's buggy as hell.

Win10 is a beta right now and I would recommend to wait for half a year at least for anyone who value OS stability more than fancy new features (of which there isn't a lot really).

Still, both the upgrade and a clean install after that went smoothly for me.

Upgraded to Windows 10. No reason to use their Edge browser over Chrome/Firefox. Don't really want to sign in to view Photos. Set it back to the photo viewer. Not really liking the start menu so far.

something bothering me

i don't see the green "reserve your windows 10" button

but i see this in control panel

Upgraded last night. Install took about 10-15 minutes. Everything worked just fine after. Games all seem to be working, video card maintained it's OC, and all my desktop icons are exactly where they were pre upgrade. I'm feeling pretty optimistic thus far.

I've had this for a few days. I thought everything worked fine on my laptop, but now I realize that some drivers just didn't install correctly. Intel bluetooth doesn't work, and Beats audio control panel doesn't boot up (there's sound, though).
I'm searching like crazy for fixes but I guess they just don't work. Now I'm sad, because I ordered a bluetooth keyboard and tried to connect it to my PC, that's how I realized bluetooth doesn't work. Problem is I ordered some bluetooth headphones and now they won't work on my lappy.

I just looked at mine and it says that too. Weird it was working the other day.

Just looked at my region settings and it had changed to U.S. weird.

found out the issue, had to download the uk english language pack and also speech was set to US english. probably still not going to use it cause i don't feel comfortable talking to my computer.

Click "View Update History". Do you see it failing?

what you mean by failing ?
its show me the updates i've installed

oh, you mean some failing updates ? yes , some are failing
but those just because i didn't restart at that time , and they stuck like that
what should i do ?

After a week of trying and failing to upgrade using the Media Create tool AND the regular Windows Update, I finally successfully upgraded from Win7.

The problem before was that every time the PC would reboot right after using the Media Create tool, it would reboot back into Win7 and give me the SAFE_OS error. Figured out that it was a problem with my dualboot set up. The Windows 10 upgrade files were being installed into my boot partition (sda1), but my Windows 7 partition was on sda2. Previously I'd been booting back into sda2 after the PC rebooted, which is why the Windows 10 upgrade was failing - the files were on the sda1 partition. All I had to do was boot into sda1 in the grub menu instead of sda2 like I normally did, and the upgrade process finally began properly.

I'm a bit annoyed because during the Windows Update upgrade process (unlike the Media Create tool), I was never asked even once whether to keep my files or not. So, once the upgrade finished and I got to the Win10 desktop, I noticed all my files and programs were... gone. Luckily they were backed up to the Windows.old folder, so I've been spending the last hour copying stuff over from it. Copied over my AppData and other folders that contain settings/preferences, and so far my old programs seem to be recognizing all my old settings OK that way. (Steam for example logged into my account and retained all my settings from before, as if nothing happened.) Thank goodness.

Despite that hiccup, I'm overall very pleased with the upgrade. The OS is really snappy and smooth. The few programs I've tried so far seem even faster than before, which I wasn't expecting. Even Blender is running noticeably faster. Only time will tell if the OS stays this snappy, though. I remember Win7 being really fast too when I first got it, and through prolonged use even it slowed down somewhat eventually.

EDIT: Just noticed none of my Steam games run anymore, even after uninstalling and reinstalling. They appear to show up in my task bar for a split second and then quit. Oh boy. :/

EDIT 2: Solved the Steam game issue by copying msvcp100.dll from C:\Windows\system32 to the folder where each game's binary is located. Apparently the games aren't recognizing the DLL in the system32 folder even though I've installed the VS redistributable over and over.

So got a security update...
Restarted....
Cant complete update. Undoing changes....the restarts....
Loops this 3 to 4 times.... So.. Yeah!

Sigh... Resetting pc because system restore fails too! Whyyyyyy updates.. Whyyyyy:((((

So I've been wondering. I currently have Win 7 Enterprise on my gaming PC, so obviously I'm not eligible for the free upgrade. However, I have Win 7 Home on my laptop which is eligible, and I have reserved Win10.

Is it possible to use the reserved version of Win10 on my gaming PC instead of my laptop? Or am I just going to have to buy it outright.
