Black Lives Matter shuts down a Bernie Sanders rally

That makes sense. But are they also going after Hillary? She's the big favourite for the presidency, Bernie's chances are rather slim. It seems so weird to protest the guy on the sideline and not the big one in the middle.

I highly doubt they can get to Hillary.

They're essentially one issue, though, given how interconnected drugs and prison are.

They are interconnected, to an extent.

There are still two separate issues, the 3 strikes policy is the one quoted, and that covers far more than drugs.

Which is why I think the discussions should be separated when possible.

Huh, so there aren't any socially liberal, fiscal conservatives? The are all racist bible beaters?

Hillary Clinton is basically a socially liberal fiscal conservative.

I highly doubt they can get to Hillary.

Great point. I'm sure many groups (from many different political angles) have failed to interrupt her events.

From the previous BLM thread.

I didn't just mean you, you... but the general mindset that he hasn't done anything.

Well that was just me trolling, and probably not an effective means by which to engage in a respectable debate. I think that I was in a bad mood, haha.

Hillary Clinton is basically a socially liberal fiscal conservative.

Haha, I don't even know if I'd consider her that socially liberal :p

i'm going to go to the chinese food place before they close because I'll be damned if another GAF thread causes me to go hungry. But I will throw this out there. you claim to "get it", and to understand what the BLM protesters and those who want more from Sanders really want. so when you ask the question, hypothetically, the answer comes from you, and that answer? "Nothing"? really? nothing can come from this and they expect nothing, so that's why they're protesting, because you totally get it?

I don't see any benefit from protesting Bernie that you don't already get from Bernie. You're converting someone to BLM who's already in BLM.

What benefit is there to protesting him? We know his track record, his current record: what will you get that you don't already receive from him? His supporters are most likely in your camp as well. So... what is it?

Socially liberal, moderately fiscal conservative.

Unless you are talking about worldwide terms.

Edit: I'd also say the distance between her and Republicans economically is larger than the distance between her and Sanders.

Well, I don't think I know anything about Hillary's actual personal thoughts about ethnic and sexual minorities, but I doubt she would pursue campaigns of disenfranchisement against them in the way that any Republican candidate likely would. And her feminist posturing makes me hope that she'd push for some gender-egalitarian legislation.

I think they want an actual plan from him not just voice his support for somethings. Did he put out his own reform plans?

it's sad that's considered a liberal position in America.

The problem I see with this is he will obviously champion your ideas. He doesn't have a concrete or well laid out plan, but his track record has shown he will champion the goals of minorities by voting, creating, and promoting bills that benefit minorities. That alone is easily more reassuring than a campaign plan.

Respond how?

Go watch the video at https://mobile.twitter.com/SooperMexican

When would he have responded when they won't give the mic back. What Bernie has to do is clear, increase security so it doesn't happen again.

I have a feeling you haven't watched the video yet.

https://twitter.com/SooperMexican/status/630152729751633920

Take note that this was before he even started speaking.

Care to share a video where the part I quoted from the article in the OP is being shown? Yes the protesters are angry/screaming, but it doesn't explain why Bernie didn't wait to speak like benicillin's post does.

I'm going to repeat this again, but this wasn't Bernie's event, it was a rally on medicare / social security he was invited to speak at before his actual rally/fundraiser started. When he went up to speak they went up on stage and demanded time to speak, so he handed them the microphone and stayed around while they were talking. He eventually had to leave because he only had time for a short speech probably and they took up his whole time and he had his actual campaign rally to get to.

Unfortunately this explanation isn't what people are seeing vs headlines like:

"Protesters shut down Bernie Sanders rally"

Thankfully the headline didn't have the word "again" in it. What this headline needs to say is "Bernie responds to #BLM protesters" or something where it doesn't look like the protesters are causing Bernie to flee.

That... makes even less sense. How would interrupting a Medicare and Social Security event help their cause. It's even more distant then interrupting a Sanders rally.

Hmm.. I'm going to a Bernie Sanders rally @ USC monday...

Is there going to be a black lives matter protest? Might have to leave the rally mid way and go support my brosephs.

Thanks for posting this. I didn't realize.

So Hillary bribed BLM to destroy Sanders and Trump to destroy politics

Makes sense

Eh, I think both are very, very plausible. Trump going third party will ensure her presidency, and although I doubt Clinton is scared of Bernie Sanders, she'd certainly like to take him down a peg.

Crazy, Bernie supports criminal justice reform and went to jail over the civil rights issues in the 60s. What more do they want from him? For that to be his entire platform? If ANYONE is going to help their cause at this point from the major candidates, its him and now they are crashing his events and screaming in his face?

I don't dispute that Sanders is the best candidate for BLM, but it sounds so silly when you say "he's doing this one thing now and he did this one thing then! What more do you want??"

It may be unrealistic to expect a platform based on black issues, but it's not unreasonable to want it.

So can we get some kind of resolution if this was a #blm protest?

The long standing BLM Facebook and Twitter account issued an apology and distanced themselves.

The one created yesterday issued the #bowdownbernie press release.

Very useful. Thanks for the perspective.

it predicts Ferguson, started with Travyvon Martin

That's why I said "kind of". Black Lives Matter (and the feelings that precipitated its formation) is legitimate and sincere, but Soros is financially invested in the group, and I would not be surprised if his recent donations came with a caveat that BLM organizers avoid Hillary Clinton's events.

That's really another interesting discussion.

Do you push for realistic goals, or untenable goals? Especially for an issue that is not a civil rights issue (edit: where there is no clear end game of equal rights).

How many groups is Soros invested in? I think that makes a difference, especially when trying to use it as a conspiracy theory.

Or Hilary having been doing these type of events for literally decades has a better security squad.

Somethin something razor

I think this thread title should be updated. It makes it sound like BLM as a larger organization planned and executed this disruption of Bernie's event. That doesn't really seem to be the case of what happened here.
